Sorry, i got my first comment before finishing the video but here comes another one:
It's pretty interesting that you thought of the vocals as emotion-less. I know that harsh vocals have limited dynamics, but i actually feel a lot of emotion from the vocals on a Moonsorrow song. I feel a lot of desperation in his vocals, because it's not 100% harsh... it's more like 90% harsh but 10% like a human scream. Specially when he lashes out the super black metal "AAAAAAAHHH" at the beginning of some sections. I think it's because of the 10% screaming that i feel this way about it, and i don't really think they fit any specific purpose since it's their default kind of vocals for every song, but i definitely think it contributes A LOT to the overall atmosphere of despair that a Moonsorrow song gives. Really tense vibes.

They are anything but emotionless.. Very emotional style like Burzum but maybe not so much in this song.

for those interested here's the lyrics in English:
The book of life written in blood
Lies in the hands of the lord of the world of war
This lasting winter could the dying endure
Still calling the wolves when wounded
The sword doesn't heal the forests' wounds
What is written is undone by blood
Hearken to the echoes of warcries
The opposing shore will not wait for the dawn
Clay from the earth, ash from the sky
Offerings of the burnt soil from flames
Waves from the sea, drops from the sky
To calm the spirits of fire
No one has looked at us from above
The scourge has ripped through the clouds
Race of rats on the deck of the world
Grudge flames in the eyes of the prey
When the west casts a shadow on east
Whilst a poisoned mind desires glory
Which was born of ice is now driven into fire
The firemakers all drowned in black
No man will say he sees the coming
No man will say he fears
Splinter your axes against the rocks
    Hang your heads and kneel
Shed your skin to reveal your flesh
Wallow in shame to sacrifice your kin
The will of man like iron unbent
Who was created flawless may hang his head
He fears, but will die fighting
In honour of gods he has never known
The victor must wait for his moment
To cast his words into the wind
    Rarely the mountais do move
Even the strongest won't shift them alone
Your flame is ablaze but once
Behold as it wanes to veil the earth in ash
Last sparkles die out in the depths of cold
Death itself you may invite to find and fan them
And so you shall weep, for the somber guest in your stay
Spreads its wings over your beautiful life
Blowing it out with one single breath
To arms, you shall always hearken
With your blood they veil the ground
It's a path you will be followed on
As long as the darkness may reach
Claim your positions, you shall never be free
In your coffins your children are carried
The wrath of man cast upon the gods
Right through strength kills the strong
Defend your home, offer your loved to the ruin
Burn the land left behind before burning yourself
The wrath of man cast upon the gods
Red clouds blur over the sky
This is how it ends, heat sweeps the earth
This is how it ends, I can see it now
Red sky to encircle the rats
The book of life written in blood
From the hands of the lord of the world of war
Lay down on earth with bindings charred
And with all words made unsaid
This is how it ends, I can see it now
This page will be the last
This is how it ends, to emptiness, to oblivion
    And none will ever return

I'm fairly certain the springy sound instrument at the start is the Jew's harp. it's sometimes heard in modern Finnish folk music and therefore also found its way into Finnish folk metal.

Great to see you listen to Moonsorrow. This album in particular is a definite top 10 of all time album for me.

I never thought that anyone would react to Moonsorrow (of course I secretly wished that someone would) and start the journey with their one of the most epic songs! I'm also greatly happy that it was you that reacted to this first. There are so many little details in Moonsorrow songs which can be easily missed on the first go. Hope to hear more Moonsorrow.

Thanks so much for putting this out there. Moonsorrow is a band I've listened to for 20 years and is still the one band that makes me smile a lot listening to it, kinda how you were throughout this. Masters of transition and evolving segments. Many times they repeat parts there is always something different that isn't always there on the first listen. Catchy yet interesting. Atmospheric and full of emotion. I have and will continue to watch this vid many times. I hope you give them another shot. My vote would be Pimea. Another music masterclass that will have you grinning ear to ear no doubt (half the length of this too). Thanks again your channel is awesome.

  • @thegrimner
    @thegrimner 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Nice. I actually suggested this ages ago, but understandably 25 minute tracks are a tall order.
This is a great composition though. Not complicated, but it doesn't need to be to be progressive, and it just flows beautifully. Ideas are usedcto its conclusion, slowly morphing and while point b might b different from a you still see how the song gets there. Henri Sorvali, their main composer, is also a music teacher and it shows. It's not hard to play, but takes skill to compose
I like music that progresses in a logical manner, which is something the more virtuoso bands sometimes forget
This is a great ecample of that, alongside bands like Cult of Luna. Glad to see this get some love.
Also ( and sorry if the comment is disjointed, i am adding as I watch, the punk influence is actually a staple of old school black metal like darkthrone or satyricon or Bathory, all of which are huve influences. Earlier Black Metal was very punky in feel, sometimes even quite sloppy.)

  • @andreas2615
    @andreas2615 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

i think you mean a jaw harp at the beginning and a flute by the end, not a violin ;)
i like huuto more as a song from moonsorrow. it is a more catchy song. but nonetheless, i am happy to see moonsorrow getting some love here :)
their feel for soundscape and atmosphere, their angry sounding vocals plus the playful folk instruments contrasting the vocals. they evoke emotions i don''t get from many artists, they are such a great band.
the whole "varjoina kuljemme kuolleiden massa" album takes you on a trip through frost, snow and ice, longing for a safe and warm fireplace.

Nice, I wasn't expecting Moonsorrow, especially not one of their longer epics. If you want something shorter and a bit easier to digest I would recommend:
    - Tuulen Tytär/Soturin Tie for a beautiful folky tune with very little vocals, featuring march beats and some weird atmospheric keyboard stuff.
    - Kylän Päässä, more traditional Moonsorrow song, with many similar elements as Tuleen Ajettu Maa, but much easier to get into.
I personally love their long atmospheric epics, but they can take a while to digest. For me they often sound a bit monotonous on the first listen before I start to pick up all the little nuances buried in the song.

Damn, that was a journey. So many instruments and elements all mixed together so well! I feel instrument at the beginning sounds more like jaw's arp not a didgeridoo (although it could be). A big fan of the synth embellishments and the rhythm section, specially the bassist. I dig how diverse the vocal styles were, honestly. Great pick!

  • @juhaloukaja5078
    @juhaloukaja5078 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I understand that harsh vocals doesn't do it for everyone, but man, you have to appreciate how skilled and versatile Ville Sorvali really is, and it has gotten even better on later albums. The lyrics are also absolutely awesome, though, this is one of those where the original feel is lost in translation a bit even if the translation is good.
Edit: Funny you should mention punk feeling in the drums... you should check out Lakupaavi. Or maybe not :D

    • @cyberdrace
      @cyberdrace 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

This Album feels like a personal lament over having to face dark times, dealing with one's uncertain fate and coping with a cruel, cold world. This song specifically seems to be about war, loss and being abandoned by your gods or something like that. They call themselves a Pagan Black Metal band as most of their songs/albums are in some way about Norse Mythology. From the times I've seen them live I'd gather they take all that stuff pretty seriously, too. The recent albums all feature long-form compositions like this, though this Album definitely takes the cake with it's two half-hour songs. I'd say the first song is even better than this (the second one), but that's just my opinion. The first Album truly in this style is "Verisakeet", before that they were slightly more upbeat, folky and simple (the difference isn't huge though). Verisakeet is probably also their darkest, most intense Album so far, and I definitely recommend "Jotunheim" as a stand-out song. I really like the most recent album "Jumalten Aika" as well. Though you should definitely check out the first song from this Album, too. All of their stuff is really good and the level of consistency is so high that you really can't go wrong.

    • @DarthWinterMadness
      @DarthWinterMadness ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@cyberdrace "The level of consistency is so high you really can't go wrong."
That is absolutely true! This level of consistency is just ridiculous.
Even if you don't enjoy one of their album on the first listen because you expected something more like the previous album you listened to (whichever album it was in whatever order), just give it another listen.
When I first listened to Varjoina Kuljiemme Kuolleiden Maasa, not long after it came out and around the time I discovered them, I didn't really like it. The live performance was great though, calmed my headache really fast.
Then after hearing Tahdeton a lot of times, it was an effective alarm, I finally gave this album a new active listen and wow... Such an amazing voyage.
The approach was so different than the more folks records like Kivenkantaja that, as mentioned, I didn't know how to take it.
Every album has its own sound that can fit almost any mood, any day and any time of the day.
Hävitetty and Varjoina are great to wake up.
Right now, since I can't walk fast because of my busted legs trips take a lot of time, and Verisäkeet is the perfect album and times itself extremely well to get to places.
Same thing with Jumalten Aika for different itineraries, finishing the album right on my doorstep. It felt so good!
Anyways, that's not really a message for people who already dig this band. It's more for people who don't know much about them and start getting into it.
It is a really fantastic band and at the moment, no other band can bring to me what they are able to.
      Cheers from France! 🍻

I've had Moonsorrow's discog downloaded for years but haven't got to them yet. It was cool to finally sit down and get to listen to an entire track. I think the thing that struck me most here is how it's something of a blend between the more progressive, epic, symphonic black metal of bands like Emperor and Weakling, while retaining much of the raw, DIY, punk-ish sound of early black metal like Bathory and Darkthrone. It's a compelling mix, and definitely has me more interested to hear the rest of their discography to see how they navigate those two (typically) polar opposite styles. It does get a bit too repetitive in parts and this probably could've easily been trimmed to a better 14-15 minute track without losing much of the epic quality.

That springsounding thing sounds like a "Maultrommel" (I think Jaw Harp in english, I'm not sure). It's an instrument consisting of a metal frame (shaped similar to a keyhole on an old door) and a metal or bamboo strip. You take the frame in your mouth and flick the strip. You can modulate the sound with your mouth or by flicking the strip differently.

Had to divide this video into two viewings lol, so my comments:
I really liked how you expressed the way the song gradually moves from the same idea into the next. I always felt the same way about this band, but was never able to find the right words, thanks!
Also kudos for admitting you won't really listen to something in the future even though you had multiple good things to say about it, keeping it real! I do hope you listen to something else from this band later though, easily one of the best discogs of the 2000s.
Regarding the vocals, yeah they can be a bit hard to stomach for sure. I love lots of black metal but don't really dig any vocalist/vocal style tbh, I just kind of filter it all out. That said, I do think the vocals here are pretty solid, and if you dig that mix growl/clean shout, check out Primordial - The Coffin Ships, another brilliant and not so-known band.

Hey there! Thanks for tuning in and dropping this lengthy comment (I can't say much though.....I can't keep my thoughts short either 😂)
I always like to give bands multiple songs before I outright decide that the band as a whole isn't for me so I'd expect Moonsorrow to show up again sometime (eventually). And even then I can't completely write them off as bands change over time.
As for keeping it real, that's what I love doing around this part of TH-cam. I'm honest and genuine and sometimes that rubs people the wrong way but I'm gonna tell ya exactly how I feel.

So close, yet so far.... This is EXACTLY the Album I would've requested, but it's the WRONG SONG nuuuuuu.... (There are only 2 on this album).
Idk. I feel like the other song has 3x as many different things going on despite having like a 7-minute build-up intro, whereas this one is more for recovering from the first one, much less dense and more atmospheric. I'm still really happy you checked out this band, they are truly the masters of long-form compositions, almost all of their songs are as good or better than this in my opinion. Perhaps the other song is too overwhelming on first listen? Idk.
Since you liked the outro so much, perhaps you should listen to "Jotunheim" + the outro song "Kaiku". After the most epic mythological metal adventure you basically end up in the forest around a campfire with your viking buddies, singing a folk song and listening to the crackling fire and nature sounds until you fall asleep (or something like that). Talk about a narratively satisfying ending!

@@u.v.s.5583 I've never seen it as a seperate song anywhere. Is it two songs on any of the actual physical releases or something? When does the intro song end, exactly?

Ah yes, another day, another politically charged crusade by the leftist SJW's of MetalSucks. They're fighting every day to introduce the same atmosphere of intolerance, moralism, oppression and forced conformity of opinion that plagues our societies into the metal community. Notice how the entire article isn't about Moonsorrow, but another band they played all of 4 times with. Random snippets of interviews and social media interacions, some of which are literally 15+ years old. Is this the world we want to live in? Where it's acceptable to go through your entire life's history with a fine-tooth comb to dig up any sort of dirt to publicly indict you for your sins of wrongthink? Where wearing a t-shirt of one of Black Metals founding bands makes you a nazi-sympathiser? Yea, Varg of Burzum is literally a crazy white supremacist. He's also been in prison for killing another band's guitarist, but I guess his political views are still the worst thing about him? What are these standards anyway?
This is cancel-culture at it's worst. It's literally applying a political purity-test to artists. If that isn't totalitarian, I don't know what is. Actual Nazi's used to call it "Entartete Kunst".
Not to mention that it is incredibly ignorant. What do these american armchair-socialists at MetalSucks know about the political and socioeconomic situation in Estonia? Maybe I would feel strongly about national identity as well if my country had a history being threatened by soviet imperialism, a threat that is probably very real for them to this day (see Ukraine as an example)? I really don't know. But the fact is, they don't know either, they only care about their ideological fight, drawing lines in the sand and dividing people into factions of "good" and "evil" solely based on their own sense of moral superiority.
My point is, this doesn't help anyone. The only people who are reached by these kinds of articles either already agreed, or they didn't know anything beforehand and could've been convinced of literally almost anything. They are only sowing more division and blind hatred.

As much as I agree with you on this, I think the best solution, if you enjoy the music enough, is to just pirate the band's discog to keep from supporting them financially, even via streaming. But you're right, I haven't enjoyed this band nearly as much since that article came out, after listening to them for 7+ years. It just sucks
