I’m amazed that so early in his career he was able to make something so visually beautiful and emotionally disturbing. I recently saw it for the first time and was astonished and very confused. I felt like I had seen something I wasn’t supposed to see. Like something private, not meant for my eyes. Very interesting film. The use of contrast is phenomenal. I’ve been studying cinematography for animation and this was great to see.

Thanks for posting this. An upload of this interview has recently disappeared and I really loved it. Don’t know why, I just love hearing Lynch at a younger age (20’s to 30’s) sometimes.

I still cant help but laugh when I hear Lynch talk so nonchalantly about how he brought a dead cat down for the film only for it to end up getting mummified in tar lmao

Straight out the gates, Lynch bulldozes us with his galvanized vision in Eraserhead. The best part is that he's been relentless with his craft to this day. A lesson to us all. Stick to your guns in any pursuits of passion.

This is probably the least vague he's been in an interview.

He said the cat wasn't in the film. The baby was probably a premature bovine that was born too early.

dark subconscious, surrealism, dream world, think things like Kafka, 1984, 1930s Euro surrealist movies, and just weird and frightening like “Freaks” and “M”
      Nance was a perfect Everyman.

I'm fairly certain the main theme of this movie is fear of being a parent

The WEAKEST and MAJORITY of Humankind are motivated by FEAR. Viewers of THIS film, who are motivated by FEAR, will find their
fait accompli as an empty space on a platter during dinner with Henry's "in-laws of darkness". Only those members of Humankind who are motivated by HOPE can learn positive things from this magnificent film. For example: Why should some films be released in Black & White?
Umm, let's just say it's BECAUSE of the difference between dark and light..and shadows.
