    NO. No, no, NO! Thank you, D.J. for your wonderful tutorial, genuinely, but nobody tells me how to START the damn tape! I KNOW how to stick something in it to keep it from sticking back down to itself once I start it. That's intuitive. Thank you but: HOW in the world do I not only FIND where the tape seems to start but know:
    A) whether it goes to the right or left, and B) how to get the dang thing to pull back in a nice full stream and not into itty bitty tiny microscopic shreds that you just keep picking at until either you have 100 pieces of tape shrapnel surrounding you or you have completely shredded your fingernail tips? Argh!!!
    All other kinds of tape are easy to "start"in my opinion, (i.e., painter's tape, Duc tape, masking tape, gaffer's tape, electrical tape, etc.) - EXCEPT clear bloody Scotch tape. So, if you will indulge me, here is what MY tutorial would sound like:
    Hi there! Question: How to Find the Beginning of your Off-brand Clear Scotch Tape. (The kind that comes without the cute little piece of plaid paper on it because that would be too easy and apparently we all like a good struggle) :
    Step 1: Claw away at the bloody roll with your fingertips, turning the damn tape roll over and over in your hand, rubbing on it like it is a damn Genie bottle that owes you a favor until you feel what SEEMS like a possible break in the vortex of this demon adhesive.
    Step 2: With renewed hope, and your fingertip still pointing at that supposed break in the tape, run to the nearest light source and place your hand holding the roll underneath the inconveniently dim light and begin what we like to call, "The Scan". Using your eyeballs God gave you to attempt to "Terminator 2-like" ability, read the object and find that sh*t.
    Step 3: After splitting many fingernails and rubbing the roll as if you were an angry, underpaid masseuse, rummage around your household until you find a straight razor blade or pair of sharp scissors.
    Step 4: After realizing you only have Lady Schick blades and they merely shred both the tape and your hand and that you have no single straight blade, toss them aside and try the scissors - go ahead - try every pair you can find, even the re*arded ones for kids that are backwards and realize that you never did get around to buying a scissor sharpener and none of these implements could cut a dandelion let alone slice into a roll of your Satan's tape.
    Step 5: Either sharpen the scissors if you can without pulling your own skin off or just start sawing with the dull ones until you have formed a tiny vertical cut across the surface of the tape. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 with your bloody, sore fingertips, and neck bent in awkward pose to hold it under the one working desk lamp you have until you can grab hold of the edge.
    Step 6: Say a silent prayer to your deity and then with shamanistic patience slowly pick at the slice you have made, massaging the edge back and forth from one corner to the other corner with ninja-like stillness and attention. As it starts to actually give you a full, unbroken piece, take a deep breath. Keep your cool. Whatever you do, DO NOT get too excited - it could all be just a cunning ruse whereupon one hasty move and it will fall back down again into the abyss, and you will have to start all over. So easy does it.
    Step 7: Using your one free hand, realize you have forgotten to grab any sandwich tabs or paper clips or anything within reach to place underneath the damn strip you have just pulled back. So now, keeping the piece of triple-thick tape you have managed to pull back stuck to your finger, rummage about your household again with your free hand until you find said sandwich tab or paper clip or Jesus, anything, a broken stick, a lipstick tube, even another roll of damn tape or a fork or something and stick it under the tape where your finger is, hoping the doorbell doesn't ring or an important call doesn't come in.
    Step 8: Carefully pull your finger out from under the started tape and replace it with the other found object. DO NOT DROP IT!
    Step 9: Once you are free from the grip of the crappy adhesive and it appears to be started, you are entitled to do a short little victory dance at this time. (All the while knowing deep in the back of your mind that you have been shamed by the evil Cheap-Tape god and your celebration is most likely premature and foolhardy).
    Step 10: You can either push your luck and try to now USE that triple-ply chunk of tape on something and watch as it breaks off again and slips right back to point A. Or you could do what I have now discovered is THE solution to this common tape problem. And I will share it with you now in -
    Step 11: (Also known as What Should Have Been Step 1): Realize you have a lot of problems in your life because everything you try to use in your household is useless because of your own lazy procrastination and forgetful mind. And your penny-pinching has resulted in yet another P.O.S. So, proceed to --
    Step 1 (a.k.a The Only Real Solution): Resolve to NEVER buy the cheap knock-offs of basic yet necessary products again and just pay the extra .23 cents to get the name brand that fricking works lik it's supposed to, i.e., Scotch tape brand.
    Then defeated, yet with a lesson learned and a stronger character from having had this journey, turn and deposit the fake, evil cheap roll into the nearest trash receptacle. Congratulations. You have achieved CheapTape Acceptance. Go to the store and buy a real roll. Thank you and good luck out there!

      When I absolutely can't locate the end, I use a sharp utility knife blade and cut straight across and about 2 to three layers deep. Then use the knife point to lift up the end and peel off a wrap or two until you have the fresh end that you can apply a end marker to. best, DFJ

    Good idead. My preferred method, however is to simply fold a half inch over before storing the tape. No additional stuff necessary and easy to find the end next time.

    • @DirtFarmerJay
      @DirtFarmerJay  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Derek Place - we've done both. We landed on this method to more often simply because the tape is sticky to the very end and there isn't a tab where the adhesive is covered. You either have to leave the tab (which can be tempting for someone to peel back the back and tear the substrate), or cut it off. Of course, it depends on what the project is and such as to whether that tab matters or not. Thanks again. DFJ

  • @dryeyestrain
    @dryeyestrain 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Regarding comments here: Folding the tape and making a tab of itself wastes tape. When storing it just pull the tape slightly to the side, offset from the roll and it will give you something obvious to grab next time without wasting tape or having to tear or cut a tab off.

    I'm sorry sir, But I came in hopes you would help me with my current dilemma of the tape already been stuck, not for future tips on how to avoid this disaster happening again (and we both know it will), so as I did enjoy these tips ,and I will employ them IF I get this tape unstuck, I truly came for help with the problem at hand. But thank you for these tips as for when I go buy a new roll I will employ those tricks and tips. For now, This brand new roll will see the rest of its family in the trash can...full rolls and all, just strips of tape that I have pulled from the sides in frustration.

    • @DirtFarmerJay
      @DirtFarmerJay  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I get it. What if you have rolls of tape that won't easily release the end? If even after locating the end, only torn strips come off, I suspect that tape roll has either been subjected to high temperatures or is really old. Both of these conditions affect the adhesive, either drying it out and sticking the tape to itself, or "cooking" the adhesive so it bonds to the adjacent tape layer instead of "preferring" the back of the tape that it is applied to.
      If you are certain that you have fresh tape product that hasn't been compromised by heat or age, then using a sharp utility knife point to "pick" the end and get it started, and then SLOWLY lifting the end until the whole width releases is the way to go. If all else fails on a fresh roll, use that sharp knife to score lightly across the roll to create a new starting point "deeper" in the roll, and peel it back down to that new starting level.
      I hope this helps!
      Best, DFJ

    You can simply fold the end of the tape under itself, creating a little tab that won't adhere. No need for anything else.

    • @DirtFarmerJay
      @DirtFarmerJay  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mike Baker - yes, that is a method that many use and it works, but I prefer this method specifically for packing and painter tapes, because I want the tape to stick all the way to the end and not have a tab that can be caught or grabbed onto to pull up the tape or undo the packaging. I've got a ready supply of bread tabs (a day old store gives us a lot of bread that we feed our chickens with), so pretty much all my tapes have these tabs. I think that little folded tab on packages is a bit of a temptation to pull, so I would always slice it off. Since I did that, I simply moved to eliminating it to begin with. Sounds like you have a different preference. Thanks for writing and watching the video. Check out some of our other videos as well. Best Regards, DFJ

    Yes. The issue is not how to prevent it t but when you still lose it. How do you find it. I’ve asked this numerous times with no answer that works. I just figure when it happens. It’s a wrap. But thanks for the hack as I know it works but inevitably somehow I still end up losing focus and there goes another roll 😊

    How do you find the beginning..😮

    • @DirtFarmerJay
      @DirtFarmerJay  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can "flame" the surface of the roll of tape. You can use a "clicker" lighter, or if you have one, a hobbyist propane torch, to lightly scorch the surface of the roll. This will accomplish two things: loosen and/or soften the adhesive - and scorch the end of the tape so it is more visible. Then your can dig under it with the point of a utility knife and lift it to peel it back. You may lose the first wrap of tape, but now you have a roll of usable tape back in your inventory. Let me know how it works! Best, DFJ

Thanks

    • @DirtFarmerJay
      @DirtFarmerJay  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Angel, not sure how to help or if you have a unique roll of duct tape! What you mention is how I use the end. I typically don't look for the end with my eyes, simply because the fingers are better at sensing that very slight difference in where the tape ends. Once I find it, I use either the tip of a knife or fingernail to flip up the edge and get it started. In some cases, I've used your method and sliced shallowly across the tape to create a known new end and go from there. Have you since solved this or is that roll of tape sitting there mocking you? Hope this helps! Best, DFJ
