Thank you for the excellent advice. Unfortunately, in academia a significant amount of emphasis is placed on grades by the university, professors, and other students. Sometimes, even people outside of academia place a great amount of emphasis on grades. I believe that, this is where students learn their emotion of worrying about grades.
I could've used this advice about 47 years ago on Friday the Third. I became so frustrated with another "C" that I gave up on linear algebra. There were three factors I later identified, but that was over the past decade, as I slowly climbed out of the frustration I had.
Thank you for your input. Unfortunately for me, I canmt just switch my way of thinking about grades. They have practicslly overtaken my life in every aspect. If I get a bad grade on an exam, then a lot of issues can come from it, not just scholarships, but also having to retake the course in general. And the most unfortunate part is that the course that you do fail might not be given throughout the school year, which can mess your plans of graduation. Grades just have such a hard grasp on a person’s life that it makes it almost impossible for some people to say “it is what it is.” It’s not just grades, it’s your time, money, health, and willingness to move forward.
I do way too much for school and it's destroying my mental health. I prepare a lot for my test and I always worry. I want to stop caring about grades so badly but somehow it's so important for me.
Thank you so much for this video! This comes exactly when I need it most because just yesterday I've held a math test, one really important and I've got a low grade. I'm not really upset, the only thing I know I have to do is to work hard and follow a schedule.
When I look back, there were only a couple of times when my grades actually mattered. First one was getting minimum cut-off point for the government sponsored schooling for my 10th standard board exams and to get qualified to enroll in science stream. The second one was my overall bachelors degree grade that helped me be seen as ‘one of the best graduates’ in the work industry, helping me score a job offer even before graduating and that too without the need to apply. Otherwise, it really didn’t make much of a difference because neither of those ‘success’ lasted long. Except for the first one where the free education helped save some money at the time, none of the others helped for long. I changed my major from science to arts and now to business so honestly doesn’t make much of a difference. Everyone else with less grades are studying with me in the postgraduate same class, some even got lucky to score early bird scholarships for further studies.
Hey Professor, I have a question on motivation and perseverance though higher level math courses. I am a math and stats major at my university and in an online Real Analysis course this semester. I am at home due to my health and only enrolled in this class. I have a very hard professor who has very few questions on quizzes and exams (testing being over 70% of total grade weight). Are there any tips to mastering this material that you would suggest? Also, is there any advice which really helped you out on your journey through math and graduate school? This is my hardest class, and my conditions are less than ideal. I would love to hear back from you over TH-cam, or email and look forward to what you have to say. Thank you, Adam
Amazing video! Loved it. Just as a reminder to all studying math, make sure you target the stuff you are weak at and you kind of fear the look of if it comes up. Those are the ones the mind does not want to even practise!
This video came at a great time. I just started my sophomore year at college. I currently have a 4.0. So far so good up until today. I only missed one question on today's quiz and it turned my whole day for the worse. Instantly became stressed and began to worry immensely. I came to the conclusion that as long as I keep my gpa above 3.5 everything will be ok, right?
So true `` IT IS WHAT IT IS`` . Today I ran out of time and did not solve a 5 marks chem question...........I came home and cried like hell I just dont know ughhhhhhhhh...............I really studied for this test but.........and the invigilator was so egoistic nd rude..........She literally noted my name cuz I asked her to not submit before time..........idk what I can do bout it...........All I can do is pray nd hope nd moreover I have phy test tmr nd I just want to blow it up!!! This vdo is really helpful nd ofc one cant do anything bout past..........I just want to thank you nd Can I get a good luck from You????................You seem so optimistic !!!!!!
I graduated college decades ago but the trauma goes on. I had a nightmare the other night where I was back in college and tried to withdraw from my classes but could not.
I just had a test today. I did decent, around 80/100 but still i feel disappointed (i could easly get 95+), i didnt practice solving problems under test conditions. this course is (7)! credits out of 120.. I hope my checker will be nice :)
Hi Professor can you do a video about math for manufacturing? I think it’s an underserved field that often revolves around tons of formulas and less math training.
The only problem for me is that my MS GPA will probably prevent me from going on to a PhD. I didn't do terrible, but I feel a little short of the 3.5 that I needed to qualify to the program at the University I was at. I'm married and in a full time job and cant really just pick up and move. My options are limited. We'll see I guess.
No need for PhD. It’s really a waste of time. It’s to theoretical and not practical in the real world. Employers would prefer work experience over a PhD.
Man, you already did a lot, don't be harsh like that on yourself. I pray for God to be in your position one day and study master's in my field, I am a first yeabachelor'sor student and 24 years old. I joined the university after I was working in a restaurant and doing housekeeping, even though it is not a thing I like but I feel proud when I look back and see what I did. Go on man bless your family with love. May Allah guide you.
As a kid, I never got the motivation to get good grades, I even associated them with scolding somehow. During most of my education, I got good enough grades to get to the next level. Once in university, that approach didn't work anymore, so I struggled a bit to find the right motivation. At some point, I just gave up trying to get good grades and just focus on having fun while learning, and then got to be a top student. I still don't care about grades and whatever awards they gave me, I just want to have fun with what I do and learn.
I wish I had a professor like you when I went to University, it would have made me feel more engaged and less anxious. A question for you, do you think it is easier for students to study maths now than during your own time doing your degree? As I get back to self-study mathematics, it feels like students have much better access to books and information than ever before.
Even if trying algebra, I will practice the maths I need for the job. I can't put my feet on the ground with much of the maths I'm seeing and that makes me outraged because I don't understand the use of it. Despite everything, I will probably continue, stupid as I am 🤔🤔😌🤭🤭
Please read these important Bible verses! "Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?" Matthew 7:27 "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." I have opposite problem: I can't get myself to worry about grades
Same, and it's a terrible feeling sometimes atleast in exam time when you skip boring things even if it can give you bad grades.
exactly. went from caring too much to not at all. it's terrifying i don't know how i'm gonna get myself to work
That would be great

I've gotten low grades all my life but I've still gotten enough to apply for things I were aiming for
Love the values you expressed here

well said. experience talks.
My philosophy relative to worry: If I can fix IT I don't worry about it, If I can't fix it why worry about IT? (I don't)
great philosophy:)

Really helpful video, thanks.
The grading system made me miss out opportunities that i was really interested in because i could not pass if i didn’t do a test
I don't worry about my grades
