However the ground wire on this vehicle was just plain brown. I tried first the brown with black stripe and it caused the low fuel light to stay on.

After watching your video and several others I found a relearn procedure since my wife's 99 4Runner needed heads and head gaskets replaced last year. That helped a little but I had a feeling it was this ground issue her gas gauge was very wonky and it went from having just under half a tank driving home 12 me we almost ran out of fuel on the freeway halfway home. I just did that new ground today and the gas gauge went from reading at over half a tank to just over quarter tank which is much more accurate
Dude you saved my butt pho sure. This worked great! Getting ready to leave Detroit for Moab in 2 days. It's going to be way less stressful knowing how much fuel I have.
It really works today I I try it the same way you said it and it really works to calibrate the gas gauge you just have to disconnect the battery negative and positive for about one hour and then connect it again and it really worked thank you for your help
After watching your vid I traced the fuel pump ground to the body its right behind the drivers taillight on my 98 runner, you can get to it inside from the rear of the truck . Then cleaned the ground right at the Neg of the batter to body and then the firewall ground right above engine left of center . One of those 3 locations fixed my gas and temp gauge. wouldn't have attempted unless I saw your vid, thankyou
Have a 99 and just got the frame patched on the passenger side, opposite the gas tank. Got it back the next day and had the fuel gauge issue. Googled it, found info about the TSB and read about people who hooked trailer wires up backwards, bad tail light bulbs and sockets, resecuring grounds etc. Thought the welder shorted the fuel sender or something but this procedure worked for me (so far 🤞). I tapped the br/bk wire and self tapped it to the chassis. Had to go through recalibration procedure but it dropped to 5/8 tank right where I figured it would be. Hopefully this helps someone else also! Thanks for the help!
I now have this same issue all of a sudden with my 2004 Tacoma, and I remembered this video from back when I watched your buyer's guide video (when buying my 4Runner). So I found the wires above my gas tank, but they're up there in a tight space under the bed of the truck in "the abyss". So I may have to feel around, pull that plug, bring it down, then splice into the brown wire (assuming it's the same wire - you never know). I've always zeroed out my trip meter for years when filling up, so I pretty much know how much I can get on a full tank. It's unsettling, though, b/c it's just above 1/2 a tank when I fill up now, and I'm about half of the miles into a normal tank, and the gauge says 1/4. Hopefully this will do the trick. Thanks for this great info!
Nice that's new!! I think over time, the ground just gets weak due to rust/etc. I had a hunch that was why my issue disappeared for this video lol. I was dumbfounded for a bit when i was filming.

Is there anything I could’ve used wrong? I did normal self tapping screws from the hardwar and 14 awg tinned copper silicone wiring and the same connectors you showed.
This worked for me. My customers gauge was stuck at 3/4 full. I was about to replace the sending unit and instrument cluster. There is a TSB for the 99 and 2000 4runner to replace the fuel sending unit (in the fuel tank) and the fuel gauge that is apart of the instrument cluster. I'm wondering if the grounding issue is in the circuit board for the fuel gauge. Thanks for blazing the trail for us.
my fuel gauge hasn’t worked since i got the truck and i just have to go off of how many miles i’ve driven since a full tank. i can go about 250 miles before i have to get another full tank and it would be really helpful to actually have a gas gauge again so hopefully this will work
I have had this issue on my 99 for well over 10 years and have been topping off the fuel every 200 miles every since. When it first happened, I had to get a tow only to find out I was out of gas. I applied your fix but will have to run some gas out to see if it works. I did measure 2.8 volts on the brown wire, so if it is supposed to be grounded, it is not.
I am happy to report that this fix worked. For the first time in soooo long, I can use the gauge. Still tracking mileage just in case, but It seems accurate. After the fix was verified, I did the calibration procedure for good measure. I still wonder though where the bad ground connection point is. I would like to repair that as other things could be impacted. Apparently, this is a common problem.
You got me thinking if this will help with how slow my gas gauge reads. I don’t have this exact issue with it reading lower than it should tho. Thanks for the sweet video.
I seem to have this problem only when towing or hauling a super heavy load. I'll def give this a try and see if it fixes the issue. Thanks for posting!
Just ran out of gas this weekend in my (new) 2011 5th Gen 4Runner. It was still showing a range of 90+ miles and 1/4 tank. I’ll give this a try. It’s pretty rusty on the bottom, so it wouldn’t surprise me for the ground to be weak.
Looks like I have different color wires then you. I have a solid brown with a white dot. Do you know if that's the same as the brown with a black black stripe?
Hey Dude, good job with this video. Did you ever look at a wiring schematic and see where the ground wire for that fuel pump harness terminates? I"m wondering if instead of making a new ground like you did, you could simply clean up the original ground wire location so you have an accurate reading fuel gauge again.

My issue is with mpg and gauge. I filled the tank up earlier today drove 20 highway miles and my gauge was down quarter of a tank? Everything stock. Would this fix issue
I have a 2002 SR5. While driving, the fuel gauge will be reading spot, then suddenly drop down to the empty mark, and the fuel light will either flash or stay on. Then it will randomly go back to normal with the light off and the geuge goes back to reading the correct fuel level. Could this be that ground wire? Thankyou!
@PhoRunner I am going to tackle that tomorrow. I am hoping that's the issue. Easy fix. I appreciate your videos, and thank you for your knowledge. I literally just bought my 92 SR5, and It's my first Toyota. I absolutely love it.
That was a typo. I have the 2002. Sorry about that. I am about to watch your antenna replacement video. Mine is stuck in the down position, the motor does still run. I am assuming I will have to pull the motor and clean it out.

I know this an old video, but my wires are different colors than yours. I dont even have a black/brown wire... its a 1996 limited, so maybe its just older style wiring they used.. for the life of me i cant seem to find any info online which is the ground unfortunately...
You can likely probe the wires and use continuity on the multimeter. Leave one end on metal (ground) and probe each pin until it beeps. That’s your wire
The colors in my wires are different (4runner 1996) - (blue/orange stripe) - (brown (no black line but with the dot)) - (white/black line (thicker wire)) - (black/red line) - (yellow/red line). Is it the brown wire too even though it doesn't have the black line?
Damn was hoping this would work for my '97 but it looks like my ground is good. I took the plug off the tank and tested the continuity of that wire with the body and it was a good connection.
Do you know how to fix Speedometer not working/ABS light ON (I can't get a code with any computers at any mechanics, trying to avoid going to the dealership).
I have a 2004 4runner. Replaced the fuel sending unit. Still not reading accurately. When I fill it up all the way the needle passes the F mark by about a quarter. What can I do about that?
Was your fuel gauge working at all before doing this??? I replaced my pump and sending unit and now my low fuel light starts coming on around half a tank it's driving me nuts
Hey man, I’ve been looking online and can’t figure out which wire is the ground on my 97 limited. I have a black with very thin red or brown (I’m colorblind) stripe and white dot, a burnt orange with white dot, yellow and red stripe, black and white and blue and white. Do you know which one is which by chance?
"I have a 99 sr5 yada yada, this wire here is for My E Locker, which you probably won't have that" Me: " Meh 🖕 yeah yeah enjoy ya bastard!" 😆😂👍 Hey thanks for sharing, maybe this will help my sending unit problem on my 99sr5... without E Locker!🤦😩🖕😆
Hey there - I'm a new owner of a 1998 Limited and was noticing a similar issue, where the gauge itself seems to work but the light is always on. Do you think that this grounding issue could potentially solve it? I stripped back the tape and the most similar wire i see is a all-brown wire with a silver dot, and a red+black wire with a silver dot. Which of these is the ground? TIA!
My 2000 4Runner shows empty when I've used 12 gallons of fuel. There should be about 6 gallons still in the tank. Do you think doing your ground wire fix would solve this problem?
Anyone know the colors for fuel gauge and low fuel light on a 98? Scoured the interwebs cant find it. Pulled everything out to do PhoRunners ground but there is no brown wire with stripe.
The problem I am having with mine is sometimes the gas guage would work and sometimes it didn't. I would fill up tank and it would still be on e with light on. Eventually it would go up and read right. Turn off truck, same thing happens. It like works when it wants to.

Then it will randomly go back to normal with the light off and the geuge goes back to reading the correct fuel level. Could this be that ground wire? Thankyou!
Seems like intermittent ground problem. Easy to test it without too much harm !
@PhoRunner I am going to tackle that tomorrow. I am hoping that's the issue. Easy fix. I appreciate your videos, and thank you for your knowledge. I literally just bought my 92 SR5, and It's my first Toyota. I absolutely love it.
The 92 may have a different wiring color and may not be the fix as described here. Welcome to the 4runner world lol
That was a typo. I have the 2002. Sorry about that. I am about to watch your antenna replacement video. Mine is stuck in the down position, the motor does still run. I am assuming I will have to pull the motor and clean it out.
@@derekthomson7424 yes you can or you can do a taco whip mod. I have videos on both!
I'll be sure to keep an eye out for you on the forum lol
lol ok. I'm not very active on forums these days
@@PhoRunner are we supposed to cut the existing wire before putting it into the connector?
Nope but don’t see why you couldn’t. It might be best to not cut it and tap it since that wire may be shares with other grounds.
@@PhoRunner oh I’m an idiot I didn’t see that you have to open the connector otherwise the hole where the existing wire goes looks like it’s closed off at the end
My mom had a 96 4 cylinder would it be the same hers not marking the gas either
Should be same
Did anyone do this on a 98 3.4? I don't have the same color wire so not sure which color is the ground? Can't find any proper info aside from buying a service manual... Any help would be great! I'm thinking black and white but not touching it till I know 100%
Unplug the wire harness and get a volt meter and set it to continuity. Probe that wire and bare metal. If it beeps, it’s ground.
thanks for the good advice... will try it....
Good luck. Let us know if it worked!
Thanks! Worked for my 99!!
Awesome!!!!!
@@PhoRunner dealt with it for all too long. And dropped tank and replaced float and so on... ten years of pushing my odometer button after giving up and here ya go Pho! Thanks much for posting man!
Glad I made this video. I was contemplating it ever since I started my channel lol. I didn’t want to do a video on a mod I already did but I figured many people may have the same problem I had. I also purchased a float and found it would not solve my problem.
Such an awesome, effective but so obscure solution to a common problem. Good work on the tube my dude
My 2012 is doing this. I'm wondering if this work fix it.
Fixed many already! Easy to test and try before you commit!
Did you ever figure out what wire it was?
The colors in my wires are different (4runner 1996) - (blue/orange stripe) - (brown (no black line but with the dot)) - (white/black line (thicker wire)) - (black/red line) - (yellow/red line). Is it the brown wire too even though it doesn't have the black line?
Damn was hoping this would work for my '97 but it looks like my ground is good. I took the plug off the tank and tested the continuity of that wire with the body and it was a good connection.
Try it. I think it’s just a weak ground. Continuity may give false reading since it’s still continuous but perhaps weak connection
My brown wire doesn't have the black line. Is it the right one?
I’m not too sure sorey
Thanks man you save me money
Excellent!!
It was off before doing the fix and stopped at 1/4 tank when empty
I'll have to try it then and see. Worst that can happen is the same thing I'm dealing with lol
True story lol
Hey man, I’ve been looking online and can’t figure out which wire is the ground on my 97 limited. I have a black with very thin red or brown (I’m colorblind) stripe and white dot, a burnt orange with white dot, yellow and red stripe, black and white and blue and white. Do you know which one is which by chance?
Take a volt meter and set it to continuity. Stick one probe on a bolt and use the other one to probe each wire. If it beeps, it is ground.
Will do man thank you for the tip!
Did you ever figure this out
Hey did you ever find out what color was the ground wire ?
Test the wires with a meter and the forum also pointed me in the right direction.
"I have a 99 sr5 yada yada, this wire here is for My E Locker, which you probably won't have that"
Me: " Meh 🖕 yeah yeah enjoy ya bastard!" 😆😂👍
Hey thanks for sharing, maybe this will help my sending unit problem on my 99sr5... without E Locker!🤦😩🖕😆
lol didn't want to confuse people with my retrofit wiring harness sprinkler wire from home depot :)
If I was at 1/2 tank should I notice anything? Or, do I need to run it down and fill it up before I see a change?
You should see it once you turn the key on.
@@PhoRunner Darn, guess my issue stems deeper
can you do a video on the big 3
I have one on my channel. Find my electrical bluesea upgrade video
PhoRunner Channel thank you
Hey there - I'm a new owner of a 1998 Limited and was noticing a similar issue, where the gauge itself seems to work but the light is always on. Do you think that this grounding issue could potentially solve it?
I stripped back the tape and the most similar wire i see is a all-brown wire with a silver dot, and a red+black wire with a silver dot. Which of these is the ground?
TIA!
I have no idea haha. Try a bolt meter and continuity to figure out which one
My 2000 4Runner shows empty when I've used 12 gallons of fuel. There should be about 6 gallons still in the tank. Do you think doing your ground wire fix would solve this problem?
Wouldn’t hurt to try it! Probably will fix it
My 99 4runner light comes on with 6-7 gallons of gas left in it. I'm wondering if this is normal operating conditions
Where did you get your fender flares?
OEM SR5 flares!
Dope. Thanks, homie. Learned so much from watching your channel. Appreciate all you do for the 3rd gen 4Runner enthusiasts
@@pamwechete14 no problem. glad i could help anyone at all haha.
does your gauge says its low at about 5 gallons? i run an ultragauge to tell where mines at.
Hmm I think 2-3 gallons now it’s on very low
Anyone know what the piece he used to connect the wires is called?
T tap quick splice connector
It always show low feul. But now I did the procedure it shows full all the time. I have the 2003 4runner. Help
Maybe faulty sending unit itself. Not sure the 4th gens have the same issue as the 3rd gen
Thank you. Though. It looks like it could be the sending unit
So my gas gauge isnt working and its skuck...also my speed odometer n RPM is not working..could it be bad ground too...but all the lights works..
I’m not too sure. Maybe just try a new gauge
Is this the same on a 07 4Runner sport ?
do you think it will work with my 97 i looked and the only wire like that i have is soled brown with what looks to me like a silver dot
I’m not too sure.. unfortunately..
Did you ever find out which wire it was?
Anybody know if this works on a 2nd gen tacoma??
Or moreso if a 2nd gen tacoma has the wiring in the same location??
same location but not same colors most likely. SOrry!
Anyone know the colors for fuel gauge and low fuel light on a 98? Scoured the interwebs cant find it. Pulled everything out to do PhoRunners ground but there is no brown wire with stripe.
Same here
I have a 2002 4runner and I don't see the wiring under neither seat in the back.
That’s odd… should be right above the gas tank like mine
@@PhoRunner Lol I found it. Had to pull the carpet a little further.
Lol
@@PhoRunner Well I ran the ground wire and it didn't work. Guess I'll have to change out my whole sending until. 😔
The problem I am having with mine is sometimes the gas guage would work and sometimes it didn't. I would fill up tank and it would still be on e with light on. Eventually it would go up and read right. Turn off truck, same thing happens. It like works when it wants to.
Just did this with mine. went from gauge bottomed out and low fuel flashing to gauge pegged at full lol. Tried calibrating but no go.
Fyi make sure your fuel is at a full tank so you have something to go off of otherwise you won't know if you fixed the problem or not
True that
I have the same issue I will tried to fix it today
Cool let us know how it goes
@@PhoRunner hey bro on my case it was the digital dash si I have to changed
I see.. lame haha. Maybe a junkyard ?
@@PhoRunner yeah I just got it from the junkyark yesterday and it work at the moment everything look fine now
99 limited when towing heavy tongue weight trailer made gas gauge inaccurate . Ran out of gas 10 miles from Pocatello with “1/4”tank.
FYI Beware .
Hmm mines been accurate and solid since I put this fix in. I also tow
Great video
Thanks
Thank you kind sir!! Blessings
You are very welcome
Is it the same wire for a 2002?
I’m not sure
