Honest Review of 5 Different Grow Lights: Power $$$ + Color Temp

  • I've struggled to find exactly the right LED grow light to buy online. They usually are the wrong color temperature (kelvin), create too little light, aren't easily hangable, or are like $200...
    Considering all factors, I've got 3.5Y experience with these lights(Have about 50 of them), and no complaints. They're about $8 each in a pack:
    Barrina LED Shop Light 6500k (rooting): amzn.to/3FBktnD
    Barrina LED Shop Light 4000k (plant growth): amzn.to/3Emy00O
    Affordable Kil-A-Watt Energy Meter: amzn.to/3pj3vEw
    This is my honest opinion--I am not being paid for my opinion. I do earn a small amount money from amazon affiliate links if purchases are made (and I mean pennies). This does not create incentive to make videos like this. My goal is to make reliable, honest, plant content viewers can trust.

    Omg I thought I was alone with disliking the crazy color lights! I love the natural color lights and use them as for our indoor lighting. Thanks for sharing!!

    Thank you for this video. I have those shop lights sitting in my closet and was looking everywhere online to see if these are good grow lights. And you video confirmed it🥳

    Great video! Do you use the 6500 almost exclusively? Or do you have setups where you have maybe 2 lights under the rack shelf where one is say 4000K and the other 6000K?

    Thank you. You certainly know your lights!
    What would you recommend for microgreens? I do not like the pink-purple either.

    Thank you! Have you compared these to the new grove lights from Soltech? Do you think the Grove lights are that much better? They are so expensive…

    • @prettyingreen
      @prettyingreen  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I haven’t directly compared them to soltech and grove, but I would put some of the best Chinese grow lights against either of those options. What you end up paying for is the better onboard LED chips made by Samsung. They tend to be more efficient and produce more “plant useable” light than “regular led lights”

    Great Video! I bought a LED Strip that has 6500k and uses ~30w. I let it hang from a shower curtain holder Bar that i put between my insides of a window. This "hanging" allows me to get the LED also closer to smaller plants. How much Lux Do you aim for? (or maybe fc in USA)

    • @prettyingreen
      @prettyingreen  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great idea with the shower curtain bar! I used to measure lux, but now I can usually “eye” it. I’ve heard PAR is the way to go, but can’t find a reasonably priced and accurate meter :/ would like to have accurate data on it though!

    So you recommend the 6500K over the 4000K lights? I do have an area that is approximately six feet long, and another three or four feet wide where the biggest concentration of my house plants are. So I was actually looking for a longer, less wide option that 99% of the 2x2ft options all over Amazon/Ebay. This would work great! AND it saves me a ton of money. I also think I don't need all six, but only three will suffice for my area, or would you suggest using all six to increase the intensity? I was thinking about using three about two to three feet above my plants, and saving the other three for another future setup. Just have to figure out a frame and pulley system like most of those other lights have. Lastly, what about heat with these Barrina lights?

    • @prettyingreen
      @prettyingreen  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use both colorings of LED and bc they are energy efficient, there is very little heat output (energy loss). There warm spectrum is best for elongation, and the blue spectrum helps develop stouter, bushier plants; plants need both. For propagation, a mix is best!

    So the T5 looks like is just a regular LED light right? What would be the biggest difference between these and an actual grow light grow light (like the ‘Barrina full spectrum grow light’ or the ‘Sansi 36W daylight LED plant bulb?’ Would there be a significant difference growing under an actual grow light vs an LED shop light? Trying to figure out the best lighting setup for my albo monstera (that I got from your albo show!!).
    What specific lights did you use to grow the albo’s?

    • @prettyingreen
      @prettyingreen  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Julian!!! Thanks for coming to the Albo Show!! 🙏
      I have not noticed a difference between LED shop lights and LED “grow lights”, but there might be some small nuances to limit the amount of green light in the grow lights (focus more blue and red).
      We use a discontinued 240w actual use “yellow” LED grow light from Amazon. I wanna say it was from an abroad company named light tunnel? I prefer the daylight coloring over the blue or red coloring.
      I hope this helps!

    Get yourself a small array of T5 fluorescent! 4 bulb array isn't very much outlay and the lumens is more than adequate for most plants. I grew some pretty green under mine and it was brilliant. So for things like salad plants or average houseplants is more than covered. And herbs too! And you can choose the colour temp of your bulbs, even mix them. And next to no heat output either! What's not to like!!

    • @prettyingreen
      @prettyingreen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Big fan of T5s! They put out a ton of light for the power consumed. Used to use them for veg all the time! These LEDs bars get really close and put out zero heat! Great low power substitute

      @@prettyingreen yes, I downgraded from a most gorgeous HPS/MH lamp. It was basically a dual bulb 600watt affair so you used metal halide bulbs when you were doing the GROW or VEG part of your chosen plants and then when it was time to flip over to a shorter photoperiod and different colour of light this lamp made your life so easy as all you had to do was change the bulb to a high pressure sodium HPS bulb and suddenly you had the SUN in your spare bedroom!!
      The heat this thing put out was phenomenal and I never felt I could fully trust it. I mean, we were sleeping in the room next door and it just seemed to s ream FIRE HAZARD!! at us. Eventually, after about 5 or 6 amazing harvests it was sold on and well, I got the t5 array and felt like it was a joke. I could have cried when I saw the poor amount of light and how weak that light seemed.
      I persevered though and I have to admit that the way the plants grow changed and the vigour has reduced somewhat but the lights really do encourage growth!!! Things slowed down but it now feels less forced and more gentle. The plants actually seem to like it!!
      Those LED do sound interesting too. Wish I had the space to try one out!!

      Grow lights are great for growing larger plants over time. But these cheaper “industrial LED lights” are great for propagating / early plant growing! Oftentimes I’ll mix a 6500k, and 4000k bulbs together above a set of young plants 🌱
