  • check out this easy to make gnat trap.
After you use a fresh banana, give it a few days to start smelling ripe. Water melon, peaches, or other fruits make a great bait.
let me know what you think and if you found ways to improve on this idea.
Here is an interesting link on Amazon of Fruit Fly Traps, you could design yours to be the same . goo.gl/RUhhTW

30 GNATS \ FRUIT FLEAS IN AN HOUR!!! We have a baby and I made him some smoothie. By the time I was done feeding him there were so many of these on the peels over my counter that I was frustrated and started looking on internet for solutions and stumbled on this. I didnt even had fruits so just picked some thrown away peels from my trash-can to do this. In an hour there are 30+ in this! You are a life saver... thanks a ton!!!

I tried a few of these traps but this one works absolutely the best I regularly clean out the water, put in fresh fruit and the next day there are 100 or more dead gnats in the water. Thanks for your suggestion.

This seems to work well for both gnats and fruit flies. (I’m pretty sure the ones in your video are actually fruit flies.) The reason for the soap is that it breaks the surface tension on the water, so the little devils sink way faster. Without it they can sometimes actually walk on water for a short while. Glad I watched this though-it let me understand I can use just about any size and shape of container (although a transparent one makes it very satisfying when you see the little pests sinking). I’m going to watch as many videos as I can about this, will add another comment if I find any whiz-bang tips.

I saw this video a couple of weeks ago and it works great. Way better than the other concoction I've been trying. Great video. 1st two weeks at least 50 gnats. Didn't think I had that many flying around my house.

I get a infestation usually once or twice a year, most likely caused by some forgotten potato or onion in the back of some dark drawer or lazy Susan. My sis taught me to put out saucers of just water mixed with dish soap and nothing else (no plastic wrap). Even just doing that I would find 3, 4, even 5 dead flies in each little cup every few days so this technique must work great! I've noticed in the last week or so that I've got a light infestation so I've just set up your "fruit fly hotel recipe" in the kitchen lol! I'm out of plastic wrap so I had to settle with aluminum foil, hopefully it will work just as well. i"ll update in the next few days.

The soap reduces the surface tension of water, so they drown instead of being able to float/"sit" on the water.

I just set it up and caught my first one!! Got a million to go!! I used the peel also to last longer and give of gases. I also use vinegar since that also attracts them in a cup alone with the soap.

An alternative I'd suggest is you get a disposable plastic container, like a solo cup, or an equivalent, then you take a tablespoon of sugar, two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, half a cup of warm water and stir it all together until the sugar dissolves, then add a couple squirts of dish soap, and leave it in the place you see the most gnats. Or multiple places, if you have a lot in your house.
You don't even need to cover it with plastic!
Seems to work pretty well as an alternative for us, however, if you'd like to try both, and see which one you like best, (or more accurately, which one your gnats like best ;) then please, try both.
The less gnats in your house the better!

Exceptionally effective but you can boost it a bit by adding a tablespoon or so of Apple juice or apple cider vinegar to the water. I shared this video on Facebook, I hope that is OK.

Nice trap. I had a fruit fly infestation that turned out to be a runaway avocado hiding behind my airfryer. Once i discovered the cause i just vacoomed the stragglers. However once things was at their heighest i used some jars with water + a spoon of sugar + a spoon of vinegar + a few drops of dish soap & mixed it up. It did work & cought a fairly casual dozen each day, but i think using real fruit like you will work much better.

This is the best fruit fly Trap - Period!! I put 2 small tupperware bannana cups in a 6x9 clear pyrex pan - had the bannans sticking up - covered with plastic wrap with rubber band - caught 100's of Fruit flies dead in the water over night!!! I am going to try it again tonight!!! I used those bottle traps - they sucked - compared to this trap - but this trap gets it done!!! Must seal the plastic wrap with the rubber band - the bananas ferment - shoot out a scent to attract the fruit flies fast!!! I just made the trap - there are fruit flies in the trap after 10 minutes!!! It is also a large area for the fruit flys to sit on - Awesome Trap - Thanks Again for sharing!!!!!

Our doors have been open to allow these pesky insects inside. I used 1 sandwich Tupperware and a Beneful soft dog food container. I used a small banana cut in half...our Gnats like strawberry ends, coffee grounds and egg shells, so I added these to encourage the group. I covered these 2 containers with a Gallon ZIP-Loc baggie - I poked holes and used a rubberband to hold secure [no where to show my picture]. I have 24+ buggies - husband has used the flyswatter too.

Another experiment would be to draw a small dark spot on the opening
with a black marker to mimic decaying fruit openings and draw them in
quicker to innards of the cup. I notice when I'm resting in a chair
they seem to fly briefly into my ears or nostrils (which really ticks me
off) and I can only guess they thought it was a fruit opening (ears I
don't understand except for being dark but nose I guess attracted/drawn
    to carbon dioxide)

Watch where the ants walk then put down some boric acid. Ants always walk the same path because they leave a scent so they don't get lost. They take the boric acid to their dens and kill the baby ants, too. Same with roaches.

Sounds like you may have either Phorid fly’s or Drain fly’s instead which requires a different method for extermination. What I did was I poured about a 1/2 cup or so of baking soda down the drain followed with about a cup or so of vinegar (fizz those MF’s and their eggs outta their hiding spot down there)....Once you’re done making the volcano in your sink you’ll finish off those little bastards by pouring a big pot or two of boiling hot water down there. I’ll tell you what...it’s pretty damn satisfying taking em’ out this way :)

The reason the soap in the water works so well is Nats breathe through their skin and when the soap gets on them they can't breathe so they suffocate

That theory sounds pretty cool Hunter, but I’m fairly certain the soap breaks up the surface tension of the water, thus the near weightless little flying rascals can no longer float on top of the solution & instead they’ll land on the surface and suddenly start sinking while suffocating ever so sweetly :)

Feed the cat then put the food away instead of leaving it out. When there is no other food source they will go into the trap. I know cats don't like cold food so microzap it a few seconds to get it to room temp.

Fruit Flies thrive in the decaying matter from fruits and drains. Gnats thrive in organic matter from soil in plants. Gnats are only a threat for houseplants whereas Fruit Flies can carry bacteria and cross contaminate food.

Can't tell one from the other, they're all pest. For the left over ones that don't go in the trap, I was blessed to come across this tip, and I tried it and it works well. Alcohol, in a spray bottle, kills them and flies. The 50% works great. I will say you have to use kind of heavy. It's a God send.
