Lyrics:
Young teacher, the subject
Of schoolgirl fantasy
She wants him so badly
Knows what she wants to be
Inside her there's longing
This girl's an open page
Book marking, she's so close now
This girl is half his age
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Her friends are so jealous
You know how bad girls get
Sometimes it's not so easy
To be the teacher's pet
Temptation, frustration
So bad it makes him cry
Wet bus stop, she's waiting
His car is warm and dry
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Loose talk in the classroom
To hurt they try and try
Strong words in the staffroom
The accusations fly
It's no use, he sees her
He starts to shake and cough
Just like the old man in
That book by Nabokov
Don't stand so close to me
Please don't stand so close to me

That intro...sends shivers of vivid emotions & uncertainty.
Absolutely brilliant
I remember at concerts that shit was turned up to 11.
I'm shocked that there hasn't been a comedy skit or a gag where someone finds out about a teacher-student relationship, and shouts "CALL THE POLICE!", prompting *The Police* to show up and sing this song.
Enjoy the freaking song bud
@@FendiGarcon1 I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t!
Enjoy life man it's a freaking joke.
in glee that kinda does happen! lol
Not only that! Sting was a teacher before he was in the band
Stewart Copeland’s drumming just stands out so much in this song. I honestly don’t think they would’ve been as good as they were without him. One of my top five drummers.
Question: who are your other 4 favorite drummers, and to what group do they belong? I played this over and over listening to the drums 1st then the other instruments. Man, where did the time go?
YES!!! All my favs on this album are about the drums.
Absolutely. Rock solid, innovative.
@@rickeyb8812 First and foremost I’d have to mention Tim “Herb” Alexander, the drummer for Primus. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but we’re talking about very specialized musicians that would rather play Jazz but Jazz doesn’t pay the bills. I know Primus albums are like adolescence but the playing is phenomenal!
Other drummers… I hate to be that guy but I absolutely love Keith Moon. I’m not a drummer but if I was….
Who else, I love what Mitch Mitchell brought to the table with Jimi.
I know there are more technical players, just naming what I like.
As a matter of fact, Stewart Copeland played in a band with Lee Claypool. Oysterhead!!!
I love how the opening segment is so dark and ominous.
tbf it's a song about s*xual predation
Yeah. A bit like the rest of the song.
I am surprised they didn't use this song on the movie Miller's Girl
When I was a child I was the teacher's pet
no you don't...........stop lying.
I love the way the song starts with the little guitar riff and the ominous bass note. The way that changes a bit but continues through the first verse then completely changes up in the chorus. It's like Prog Pop! I've listened to this song for decades but just lately come to appreciate it even more.
A lot of ominous notes in Police songs. Usually something foreboding and off-kilter, a lot of chromatic songs, relatively few happy diatonic tracks.
Thank you guys for the exposure to the new words! "Ominous," "diatonic "......etc... This is what I love about music. Learning! Unfortunately I left school at the very young age of 15. However, I feel enriched with the education and knowledge that I have obtained through lyrics of music and people speaking about music. I wouldn't have the vocabulary that I have today had I not loved music the way that I do. I wish you guys a great day! ❤😊

A song that still stands out today over time. Timeless classic
Stewart’s dance moves are the best part of every Police music video

You got to hand it to the Police. They really brought on the next decade. Such unique sound and sensibilities, such great songwriting and aesthetic. Not just Sting and Stewart, gotta give credit to Andy Summers and his way of sort of washing sound over the track. Nobody sounded like them, before or since.

This brings back memories of when I was entering college in 1980, the year the song came out. It became one of the signature dance numbers at frat parties all across campus. Its creatively tight harmonies perfectly evoke the edginess the title expresses-which also expressed my feelings about girls at the time, much to my chagrin. Thanks for posting!

Synchronicity is definitely not underrated, it was in fact their biggest success (and for a good reason) and they were already huge when it was released, so guess what. Zenyatta Mondatta might be underrated but Police themselves don't have a high opinion on it either, it sounds very rushed out and underproduced like they actually admit.
What a beautiful song to listen to while riding/driving in a car at night. The soothing base solos make it such a great song for this.

No not under rated by a long way, the ego's got too big to contain and by the end as Sting has stated they were recording their respective parts at differing times and sometimes differing studio's to prevent friction.

Sting was actually an English teacher so based on this song it would seem that someone need to call the.........POLICE. Hay oh!
やっぱPOLICE好きだぁー‼️
Yes the 80s was the best ❤️ and the Police was one of those bands that just made it even better, brings back good old memories.
Good memories of what? The songs about a paedophile
The baseline in the beginning of this track is SICK! (In a good way).
im agreeing yep. ahhh memory lane going to watch a few times, i love this song still andvideo
Farantino Morgan I watch this video often, as it still remains heavily in my playlists, too. :-)
Ditto. I was 14 when this came out and only into Van Halen and Kiss. Nothing sounded like that opening bass line. It made a lot of heads turn. I got the album and thought I was the edgiest mofo around.
How are things doing in the Persian Empire, dude?
Παραπονίεμαι στον ντουνιά
I remember listening to this as a senior/junior in High school and I also had a crush on the hot history teacher (at least I wasn't in his class)...crazy how the right songs pop up :S
Me too exactly! Except in this decade. aw man
Just another brilliant song that still sounds brilliant today who agrees with me.
This is a good song to relate to now with the Coronavirus happening.
you can relate to this song now? Are you attracted to underage girls now because of the epidemic? Watch out for Chris Hansen there buddy...
This song has really gained another meaning now.
Not really
And the worst part is that the new meaning is probably a more innocent one too lol.
These three men make my life worth living ❤️❤️❤️
Say that to children
Such a banger of a song. The epitome of catchy.
40 years later and still a great song.
Every police song in video and album best song all time
"Still"? Do you think music deteriorates as years go by? Quite the opposite in my experience.
@@Chrisbajs No I was just saying it'll be a song beloved forever, not just for us but for the future too. No pun intended.
@@Chrisbajs easily offended much?
"I want my,
I want my,
I want my MTV."
Perhaps this was the inspiration? 🤔
So much that Sting ended up with credits on Money for Nothing and he didn't wrote any lyrics :)
Looks like Sting got his money for nothing and his chicks for free.
Sting also sang the I want my MTV part live once
Also in the studio version
Will forever make me think of Joey Tribbiani from Friends.
What season
@@samsmith5640 season 1 episode 9
Mario, right?
@Paddy Orourke that show was the best of its generation!!! You sicken me!
Ahhh, S.T.D'S😂😂😂
I always go back to video as a young British teenager of the 80’s and trust I loved the police (sting❤) however, in my 50’s now and being grown up now, I can appreciate even more the meaning behind the songs so much more. Love from a Brit xx
