- This 4/4 violin inspired on the Maggini model with double purfling and bird-eye maple back has a big crack on the top and a problem with the edge. Not long since I have been watching the channel but enjoyed so far. Explanations are clear and a lot of secrets the other people would not tell you. Carry on with the hard work. Excited to see the violin in the making finished

This video is exactly what I was looking for. I was surprised to see that you take the fingerboard off only by prying with a knife. Other videos are showing all kinds of crazy techniques with alcohol and warm water. Your videos give me the confidence to build and repair my own violins.

very pleasant to watch your clean job in repairing and setting up a broken violin, especially the way you were shooting a film the setting up the sound post with one camera from outside, and the the other from inside through the hole of end pin I assume.

Thanks again for an informative video 👍 don’t mind not having a commentary I can see the reason why you complete the task the way you do. Although it’s understandable why some viewers would prefer a commentary. Anyway keep posting the videos as I learn something from each one.
I love the ASMR in this video because it makes me feel like I'm in the shop repairing instruments, but I also like the narrations because I learn things I wouldn't otherwise learn. Maybe you could mix the two?

I like the old format better. You don't have to explain things that you have already made a video on, of course, but I think it's nice to hear the reason for certain fixes or methods.

Great video. A little trick from a fellow luthier. If you take a wooden No.2 pencil you can split it right down the center. You can then use this to mark on the bridge to see where your projection height is by running the split pencil over the fingerboard surface.
Thank you for the tip. I have used this methode but after a wile the pencil bent (maybe form humidity? who knows) and all my bridges where to high!! Now I use a ruller to make two smal marks.

Very nice video but I also prefer with comments but both ways are ok for me so please do which way is best for you. I also loved to see your tools. Maybe you can make a video where you show your different tools. Maybe you already done that so in that case please remind me when so I can go back and watch it. I was glad to see you open the seam in order to close the crack in the face. I get skittish doing that with customer violins. There's really no other good way though.
I almost always do it like that! You give some more space and remove the stress from the crack.

Started playing about 8 weeks ago, having a hard time not picking up the violin to practice. Right now my neighbors will set fire if I would play because it's basically in the middle of the night. What better thing to do than watch your videos? This asmr thing is really fun, but I personally like the narrated work better.

Thank you! I mostly use 2800 or 3500 grid sandpaper and water.

Kimon. That was a pleasure to watch. Can you tell me what glue you were using for that repair. PS Would a sound post crack like that have been better to take the top off and put cleats on the inside to repair the crack ?
Hello Ricky. Thank you for your kind feedback. I mostly use hide glue for the repairs. This was not a soundpost crack but a "normal" one. An soundpost crack is a crack the pases over the soundpost and under the right foot of the bridge. In that case (also depending on the value of the instrument) I would do a soundpost puch. I'm working now on a cello that will need a repair like this so you will be able to see it in some time.
What brand/make butterknife do you use?
I have watched some of your violin repair videos. I have a very old violin I used when I was young. It;s a very good violin with a dragon head scroll. The handle and the part that holds the strings are disconnected. Are you interested in seeing it to see if it is repairable? I can take a picture of it.

Removing the top is pretty intensief for an instrument, I try to avoid if possible.

Is it always better to change the old hardwood fingerboard to new ebony? Does it affect the sound character?
I change them because of a couple of reasons: they don't look good and they are too soft and get worn out too soon. It affects the sound as ebony I heavier tha the wood that was used on this violin but I couldn't compare them.
Very interesting video. It made me think more without you talking and I just observed. I liked it, though I'm sure I would also if you were talking! What kind of glue do you use for instrument repair? Is it just one kind? Or do you use different kinds?
Thank you Jolox. I use hot hide glue for most repairs and sometimes synthetic glue but then I explain why I do so.
I have the same crack in the front (but wood is Soo really thick 😞 I have tried with glues but never got fixed
