Yes, you're right, apparently you crocheted it too tight. But if you haven't unraveled your basket, here is some tip how you can try to fix it. First spray some water on its walls from inside and outside the basket. Then do the wet-heat treatment for the walls using an iron with the steam. After that, right away, while it's hot and wet fill the basket tightly with as many towels as possible (use those towels that fit the size of your basket) until the shape of the basket looks good. And leave it like this for the whole day or night until it's completely dry. After that your basket will keep much better shape.
