The Birdcage is hilarious 🤣!
I don't so much knock Gene for giving a thumbs down to Down Periscope as I do give Roger credit. Rotten Tomatoes actually has a critic score of 11 percent (!) for the film, owed to the fact the premise is simple and the timing of releasing such a film 15 years after "Das Boot," six years after "Red October" and a year after "Crimson Tide" means critics who watched all of the above might have felt like they'd already spent a little too much time underwater.
In the end, Gene & Roger's opinions moreso matched those of the viewing public, which scored the film 62 percent positive. I love the film as a silly comedy with heart. I feel like Gene wanted to like it but ended up couching his opinion. Roger just went with his gut and I give him credit for that.
"Homeward Bound II" was a huge disappointment compared to the first film!
Siskel got it wrong with The Birdcage.

I actually liked Homeward Bound more than the first one
It was enjoyable. Siskel seemed like a humorless prude not liking it.
Down Periscope is a fun popcorn movie. Not *great* cinema, but it does what it's trying to do and is good entertainment.
1. Anne Frank Remembered (1995) - A heartfelt and insightful recollection of the life of the gifted girl. It deservedly won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. 👍👍👍
2. The Birdcage - Mike Nichols' listless remake of the 1979 French classic by Eduard Molinaro is saved by Nathan Lane. 👎👎👎
DOWN PERISCOPE was a good movie.
I rewatched it recently, it did not hold up sadly.

La cage is a better film but I still love the birdcage mostly based on the performances.
What gets me about these two is that they sometimes seem to forget that the average move-going public isn't as well-versed in film minutia as they are-the assumption that everyone, OBVIOUSLY, has already seen the French film upon which the Birdcage is based, is frankly a bit ridiculous. I only know that it was originally a French film because of Siskel and Ebert! I enjoyed the Birdcage for years without ever knowing that.
The French film was a huge hit in America.
Reviewing movies is writing and you have to write what you know and what you felt. You can't review from the perspective of "the general audience" without coming off as pandering or disingenuous. By being genuine, you create trust with the audience; whether they trust that they mostly agree with your opinions -- or don't.
Down Periscope was a great show. Gene missed the boat on this one
