    honestly i love talking and revisiting the early internet days it makes me feel So many things. early 2010s furry art made such a huge impact on me as a kid ;_; it fills me with joy when i see it, definitely make more related videos i would love to see a deep dive on early era of animation memes

    this video is by no means meant to be a comprehensive history of animation memes (maybe some day i'll tackle that), just a video where i answer questions that ive been asked often and seen around a lot. this video is mainly about my personal experiences in and around the community, and isn't necessarily objective. please keep that in mind! thank you!!
    EDIT: i stressed in the video that the lushi dance isnt necessarily the first animation meme, so do not treat it like it! we will likely never know the true "first" animation meme. the lushi dance is just the oldest i could dig up in a relatively short amount of time. in fact, i think i remember a few potential memes that came before it after compiling this video. i was not trying to find the first meme, i was just trying to prove nya nya dance wasn't the first.

    So I know I'm not super heavily involved in the animation meme community but Dude you're THE webkinzlid??? Seeing Alermi for the first time in literal years just unlocked hella memories. I wanted to be an animator soooooo fuckin badly between 2008 and 2011 and I was super heavily inspired by videos like yours (along with names like comi, wolflover007, darkkokiri, tribbleofdoom, hinauchi, blazethefiredragon, etc).
    I'm glad you touched on cringe culture because cringe culture is probably the biggest reason why I've never been an animator. I internalized (and still tend to internalize) a lot of Fun-Police rhetoric. I didn't feel like I was allowed to suck at animation or art back when I was a tween and I don't feel like I'm allowed to suck now that I'm almost 25. But sucking is the natural state of starting a new thing, and so I just never start!
    I'm still working on killing the Cringe Cop in my brain but man fuck cringe culture lol.

    • @VoidQueen
      @VoidQueen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      yep thats me! thank you so much for sharing. im so happy to hear that i inspired you, and im so sorry that the fear of being "cringey" held you back. i like to think that cringe culture is more dead now, but there's def still more work to be done. once you internalize that monologue it can be very hard to work your way out of it regardless (trust me i went through it too).
      sucking at art is fun! outsider art or otherwise amateur art has a lot of value, and even if it didn't, the important thing is that youre doing what you care about & that youre having fun ♥

    ahh omg this was such a nostalgia trip, the animation meme community has impacted me so much. my entry into the animation community was thru sunstripe31 and reokeo iirc? Theres so many other creators but I could be rambling on forever lol, and I feel like we lost so many notable channels over the years.
    I think something I really cherished from back in the day was making collabs on platforms like iscribble, where you could literally draw your parts together and chat in real time. I also kind of miss the more personal style memes like the "the song" where people had to make up their own lyrics and stuff, that was all so fun.

    • @VoidQueen
      @VoidQueen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      ikr? i saw a kickstarter for a new iscribble going around and i really hope it gets funded. as far as formatting goes animation memes have changed so drastically, i could prob make a lengthy video just examining the change in formats over the years ^^;

    The first meme I made was caipirinha May 23, 2009 (not created) on Scratch. I think Maskedstar was the one who seemed to make most of the memes on that website or at least bring them over from other websites. All of Masked's projects have been deleted however. Other popular animation memes on Scratch at the time were Jai Ho, Shadowbox, The Baby Boy Dance, LA BOMBA!, He Can't Brake These Cuffs, Don't Stop, Elbows Up Side to Side, and Move Drop Shake.
    Scratch was weird because animation meme remixes involved downloading whoever you wanted to remix and editing their project, so people would usually make their own drawings but keep all the timing and effects and stuff of the original. It was expected that you credit whoever's programming you used but not the meme's originator or the music.

    Oh man, these feel so nostalgic for some reason! I wasn't even on TH-cam in 2009, but watching Pikachus dance to that Nya Nya song was a secret guilty pleasure of mine when I was younger.
    These videos feel so weirdly nostalgic even though I was a few years late to them. Those edgy colorful anime cat/wolf OCs were a staple, something you just don't see anymore. No amateur Flipaclip preteen nowadays captures that vibe from back then, mainly because programs nowadays are so much more flexible than MS Paint. And, well, the old anime-esque sona style isn't like it used to be.

      ofc i dont blame people who don't know the original, though. you gotta do some real digging to come to that conclusion on your own.

    Honestly, I wish I was around back then, I started getting into the animation meme community when I was maybe 9years old? About 7 years ago, and even then, it was a whole lot different than how it is now. I’m not the best at animation, drawing, but the expectations people have for animation now is crazy because not everyone has the abilities as everyone else, and get hated for because of that. Everything was so much nicer and it almost seemed like everyone knew eachother in a positive way back then. But now it really seems like things are falling apart 😭

    • @FurryWrecker911
      @FurryWrecker911 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oooooof, yeah friend, you got in at the wrong time. 2008-2010 was like peak for MS Paint animations before applications like Adobe Flash became more readily available through illicit means, and suddenly everyone was animating at a beginner level instead of an entry level. The Google+ merger of 2011 also mucked things up as that was YT was overhauled completely. Annotations, video replies, tagging, the rating system, the yellow subscribe button, all of that got nixxed over the course of a year.
      On the flipside though, hardware had become more readily available now than it was in that era. Huion, XP Pen, and secondhand/thirdhand Wacom tablets are available at the cost of a new video game. Applications like Clip Studio come with animation tools pre-loaded. Even editing and playback software like Shotcut and VLC which are open-source and free exist now. Even for streaming OBS is a swiss army knife of functionality whereas back then you had FRAPS, Hypercam 2, Or LiveStream which were either costly or clunky. The bar deffo has increased over time, but that's not stopping newcomers at all. It just takes a few personal rough drafts until one might come up with something publish-worthy. I think animators like Ice Cream Sandwich, QIXR, and Noodle found that perfect balance of "simple yet entertaining" that most beginners should shoot for.

    Star ratings, tagged videos, annotations, video replies, MS Paint and WMM- Such simpler times those were! This was a nice trip down memory lane. I was devastated half a decade ago when I went back to try to watch the old videos only to learn most of them were deleted, but I 100% understood as to why you did what you did. Valid tbh.
    I don't know if you remember, but I tried to start a street-racing series called The Burnout Strip involving Alermi, FireFluff, Bex, KyoKitty, Bani, and a few others, but it never got anywhere past the trailer which has long since been lost to time. I think the only remnant of it was I have a snapshot of my old channel background in my 20 subscribers celebration video of the garage and all the cars in it, which has been unlisted for a decade. Alermi had a Ford Thunderbird SC, Fluff had a Hummer H3, Bex had a Ferrari 355, Kyo had an Aston Martin DB9, Rekker had a Supra, and Bani I think was supposed to have the Porsche 911 but my documentation was nonexistent when I was 12 so I have a whole bunch of vehicles still in my Sketchup folder and no idea what some of them were for. What ended up killing it entirely was I got stuck on voice acting. Too scared to ask people for help, and too clueless on that I could have done what RPGs do and have sound effects play over subtitles.
    I took it a step further and had wiped a lot of files off my laptop when I got introduced to what Steam was and got into The Orange Box. I even had deleted an entire stop motion Paint dot net video I was working on for BaniTehKitty and... uh... I forget their name, but they were an orange cat with a star pin in their hair that was also "big" at the time. Oh well, "kill your darlings" and all that. I was clueless on how important archiving files were, but it was also the era where a 4 GB flash drive was 30 dollars.
    I wish I could go back some days knowing what I know now. This stuff was my world but it took me way too long to figure out how to get into it. lol. Now I'm approaching 30 and do landscape painting, 3D drafting for simulators, and participate in National Auto Sport Events. Funny how time changes like that.
    Again, thank you for making this!

    To me the earliest animation meme that i can remember that isnt directly tied to 4-chan culture is the hamster dance. Meme culture as far as i know started around mid 2000s and more of a thing for 4chan and various similar sites. I didnt even hear about 4chan nor the idea of meme culture untill 2009 but from what i could understand its existence was all the way back to 2004 and derived from an earlier japanese site. And so ofcourse most of that culture was going to be primarily japanese animation memes. But a meme doesn't necessarily need to be duplicated a million times by different artists, it merely needs to be shared enough that it's declared "viral". And there were plenty of content out there becoming memes but not necessarily referred to as memes just yet. And as such for back then, most animation memes were simply called music videos or looped animations depending on the content and the word "meme" was more for informal recognition of viral status. And really only 4chan trolls actually cared about calling something a meme back then. Everyone else would say "oh hey this is a really popular internet sensation". Also most dedicated animators had their own websites as basic html + plugins was still the primary standard and flash and it's predecessors was the go to plug-in for anything more technical than basic html. And then after 2010 all the animators started relocating to youtube and such

    I always get sad whenever i realise that i never grew up during this age, since i honestly never grew up in that era.I
    I grew up around the cringe culture era (Sadly), and i was EXTREMELY toxic. Like- I'm glad my parent's didn't allow me to make an account at that time, because i literally hated on people who shipped there oc's with fictional characters -_-
    I kinda wish i grew up in the early days of YT, tbh. I always feel like shit whenever i see a channel that hasn't posted in ages (Like one GORILLAZ animator i enjoy, there last post was i think 7-9 years ago? But I'm really not sure.) And idk why it just makes me feel sad i missed the whole "Scene kid" Era since it fits somewhat into the aesthetic i have, and qlso cause the olden days of the internet give me nostalgia even though i never grew up in that era.
    (Well, at least i can say that i began a furry hater, but then i ended up joining the furry fandom xd)

    What ever happened to xlushix? I find it very sad that she is no longer well mentioned in the community. There is ONE reupload of the cursed collar vid bu5 I can’t find anything of her... it’s very disappointing because lushi was the one who kinda started it all...

    • @FurryWrecker911
      @FurryWrecker911 ปีที่แล้ว

      She goes by @JupiMeow these days. Her old account got terminated 3 years ago because it hadn't been signed in to in years, and was allegedly hijacked by a crypto bro who used it to promote crypto. Tacocake69 had archived and uploaded most all of JupiMeow's old Lushi animations roughly 4 months ago.

      @@fluff3r_muff1nz008 Crypto is just shorthand for cryptocurrency. A shill is a dastardly person who uses deception tactics to make a sale in bad faith. Car shill, vacuum cleaner shill, video game shill, crypto shill, etc. In other words its a pushy and invasive salesman.
