Mardi Gras Indians practicing their chants and calls after the funeral of the late Big Queen Chief Barbara. The Mardi Gras Indians named themselves after native Indians to pay them respect for their assistance in escaping the tyranny of slavery. It was often local Indians who accepted slaves into their society when they made a break for freedom around early to mid 1800s. They have never forgotten this support.The chants that you hear are usually stories of the struggles in the neighborhood, violence, poverty, celebration of life or death etc,,. These chants and calls are passed down from generation to generation.

Phyllis, I am writing you from NYC. Few days ago (Sept. 2018 now) I was visiting good friends down in the West Village, and I passed a club. There were two framed, glassed pictures out front of this place. One was some NYC scene, nothing impressive or significant. The other one, was of Big Chief Tootie Montana. I just stood, for the longest time....savoring that picture, feeling such joy to see his image there..mercy!
Very glad this is posted. I've never heard of this part of the New Orleans culture. THIS IS WHY NEW ORLEANS MUST BE PRESERVED AND RESTORED.

Man, I thought I seen some thing in my life . Been Mozambique 4 times Cuba 4 times. Cambodia 3 Times Nepal Tahilnad Vietnam all over europe but this surley is some kick ass culture. At least change the colors the way there suppose to on the feathers on the native indian culture they're doing. Purple, red, and other strange colors, the real native american indians back then never had those colors on.
