  • Say hello to finance recruitment specialist, Shannon McGarry, who has an extensive knowledge of recruitment within industry in the finance sector.
    With over 10 years experience, Shannon predominantly recruits for finance leadership roles within the North West.
    Throughout this interview, Shannon tells us what a typical day-to-day looks like, how she helps clients, how she helps candidates and how you can get in touch with her.

    My name is Shannon McGarry. I’m the specialist finance recruiter at Spencer Clarke Group and essentially what I do is I cover all industry roles, so that’s everything from Accounts Assistants right through to C-Suite roles and everything in between.
    My sweet spot would be sort of like the finance leadership positions so Financial Controller, Finance Manager etc.
    I’ve got a real affinity with finance - I absolutely love everything about it and what it can tell you about an organisation, so I know that a P&L can be the heartbeat of every single business, it can tell you what’s good, what’s not good, where to improve and where to not.
    00:45 Tell Us About Your Recruitment Experience
    I have been working in recruitment for near on ten years and I’ve covered pretty much most sectors within that time; I started off within business support, permanent recruitment covering customer service, admin, PA, that kind of thing, then moved into the temporary side.
    In 2018, I stepped up into a management role and ran a sort of small team covering the accountancy and finance for Lancaster and Cumbria. Now I’m covering the whole of the North West at Spencer Clarke Group, particularly looking at industry roles within manufacturing.
    01:21 What Does Your Day To Day Involve?
    My day-to-day would involve basically networking on all different sides, so I’m looking for really really talented candidates within the marketplace that either are actively looking, or just want to be kept up to date about what kind of roles are out there.
    I’m going on the job boards, I’m on LinkedIn, I’ve got candidates that I’ve got relationships with from when I started back in 2014 and that’s kind of what I’m doing on a day to day basis.
    I’m doing candidate interviews, I’m doing meetings with clients, I’m getting out there into the business parks and meeting people and saying hello - it’s all about building relationships!
    02:00 How Are You Able To Help Clients?
    I would help clients by being a true consultant, so I’m not just there to be a transactional recruiter, just throwing a CV at a job and hoping it sticks. What I want to do is to really understand your organisation, I want to know the culture, I want to know what the business plans are whether that be short term or long term and what kind of candidates might be there to support you with that goal.
    Quite often, something that’s very common at the moment, is system implementation so I’m working with a lot of businesses finding experienced finance leaders to help them implement new ERP systems within their business.
    I’m also there to advise on the market as well because it is constantly changing. I think since Covid, we’ve had three different changes within the marketplace, sometimes it’s really candidate driven, sometimes it’s more job driven and I’m there to give that support and advice on the market at that time.
    02:53 How Are You Able To Help Candidates?
    Candidates, it’s quite similar to the other side, I want to understand you, I want to understand what you want, what are your key drivers, what’s important to you, so it might be that you want hybrid working or flexible working so you can go and pick the kids up from school and what I do is advise you on the marketplace.
    I’ll give you advice on your CV and then what I will do is I’ll reach out to businesses who really fit that profile what you’re looking for and hopefully find you that career move.
