    Thanks for this great video! I recently acquired a non-working 1015 and have just started troubleshooting. The thing lights up, the motor and amplifier work but it doesn’t select records. If I physically move the mechanism up to engage the record with the needle it plays fine. Just need to do some detective work to see what’s going on. Your video will help immensely. Thanks!

  • @UncleDoug

    Yes, the mechanism should move easily when you rotate the universal joint with your hand. If it doesn't then there is a good chance that you will either burn out the motor (be sure it is properly fused) or strip the big fiber drive gear. If you are mechanically inclined, I recommend disassembly of the mechanism, a thorough cleaning (I use lacquer thinner on all metal and fiber parts), and then reassembly with modern lubricants (synthetic oil and grease on heavy-wear surfaces).

    Et Parns: Your comment had no reply capability, so I'll respond up here. It's virtually impossible to troubleshoot a jukebox without actually seeing it in person. The mechanism is quite complex and verbal descriptions of parts and actions are generally impossible to decipher. There is a sliding sleeve next to the big fiber gear that is slid away from the fiber gear by a knife-like blade when the turntable is at the top of its lift. When it slides away, the motor mechanism is disconnected from the pinions and fiber gear, leaving the mech in neutral. When the record is over, the knife blade is lifted, the sliding sleeve is released and re-engages the mechanism to let down the turntable and go to the shut down point. I hope this makes sense. Good luck.

    On the 1938 Seeburg Classic Symphonola, the drag the trip mechanism put on the tonearm & consequently on the grooves of the 78 toward the end of the tune was so high it basically would wear the records down so much that after about 20 plays, the last 45sec or so of the record was almost nothing but hiss. From what I understand, the jukebox folks would visit restaurants on a timed interval (probably per week for high usage, and replace the worn out records.
    On my 1938 I didn't want to wear down the records so I replaced the tonearm with an early 60's Garrard tone arm & substituted a micro switch with long wire that the tonearm triggered instead of the physical lever & then installed a solenoid to do the actual triggering. I did that when I was about 12yrs old & it kept working past when I sold it. I also kept the original triggering parts as well as the original tonearm in case anyone wanted to put it back to original. I see where that box is only worth about $1800-2000 these days. Even the famous 1015's have lost a lot of their value as the appreciators of such technology & 78's is diminishing along with the age of the appreciators! Great videos on the Juke as well as all the tube amps! Thanx again. Glen Mars Amp Repair

      Thanks for your input, Glen. The 1948 W-1100 had a very light weight tone arm and cartridge.....and solenoid-assisted shut off, much like you "invented" for your '38 Seeburg. Yours was ten years ahead of its time :)

    As I mention in the video, I too am apprehensive about the fiber gear because of the nightmare of replacing it. I've found the best lubricant for it to be plain old Vaseline, fed into the gear teeth while it rotates....removing any excess that accumulates on the sides. For the rest of the mechanism, I use my own mixture of Mobil 1, ATF, and graphite powder. It provides exceptional lubrication and never dries out.

    I guess you could say that the motion of the player mechanism is "programmed" by the positions of the cams and gears within it. It's a mechanical programming, rather than electronic, but the functional steps are systematic and predetermined, just like with a computer program.

    Doug, Loved your videos and am amazed at how clean the inside of your Jukes are!!.
    I like many inherited my 1015 and it works almost perfectly.
    My issue - As I press the selection buttons, I receive a very convincing sound that the selection has been made and the credit is used. Most times the record plays correctly; however, sometimes for certain buttons nothing further happens, the Juke stays idle. I shut down the machine and then later after restarting the juke, the button which previously didn't engage works fine, with the record playing as intended.
    When I make a selection and it works as intended, the central plate quickly moves backward against the back plate and then quickly back to center. Your video seems to show it move backward and then stay in place against the back plate for the duration of play. If I push the screw in which is located on the master controller switch (in the middle of the selector coil, my 1015 plays each record in order, 1, 2, 3, etc.
    I think possibly the selector rod pins on the back of my selector coil may need lubrication. Do you believe I am on the right track (pun intended)? Do you have a recommendation for lubricating the selector rods and if so, do I need to remove the selector coil from the unit to gain access? If I'm not on the right track, can you provide an opinion on my next step forward?
    Question two, when I insert a quarter, my 1015 provides three plays. I would like to change it to five (or more). Is this an easy setting within the coin grinder?
    Your expertise and time are most appreciated.

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Bill. The selector rods must be very clean and without lubrication. Removal of the circular coil assembly will facilitate the cleaning and understanding necessary to resolve the issue. There is a small loop of wire in the coin grinder that has been cut to reduce the number of plays for a quarter. Look inside and you'll see it.

    • @billfroelich2375
      @billfroelich2375 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UncleDoug Hi Doug, As I sat looking at the Juke, (I seem to do that a lot on most of my projects), I found that one of the lead wires to the coil was parted and barely touching the connection tab. I was successful in adjusting and soldering the wire back in place. I'm thinking I may wait to see if the machine selector now works OK before removing the drum. I keep thinking removing the selector drum must be a bit like pulling a bandaid? Pretty scary until you do it.
      Next steps for me are to lubricate the internals and polish nickel parts. That and figure out where the extra pieces found in the bottom belong before something implodes (2 screws of different sizes and 2 brass or copper shims). Along with the Juke, I also received several containers of 3 in 1 oil. I'm on the fence, would you use 3 in 1 for the various parts requiring light oil? I noted in one post that you mentioned you use Vaseline on the fiber gears. Do you still do this?
      In looking, it appears that some of the nickel fascia parts seem to be much easier to remove than others. Are there any pitfalls I should be watching for? I guess I should add here that I did purchase replacement "inner" door plastics from Victory and I have removed the originals, so things on the door face are fairly open at the moment.
      Thanks again, your time and insight are greatly appreciated.

      My turntable has stopped raising all the way and stops about 1/4" to 1/2" short of the needle. I think the turntable lift link has become loose, so I'm going to pull the chassis out of the box and check that part and the rest to make sure all parts are tight. Is this a common issue?

    I owned a 1938 Seeburg Symphonola or years. Interesting how similar the Wurlitzer is to the Seeburg or possibly visa-versa. The 'later' Seeburg mechs very close in theory to the 1938 mech. Also worked on a 60's Seeburg H100F and it's mech had vestiges of the earlier Seeburg's, too. I'll be working on a 1947 Wurlitzer here in about a week. Should be fun. Good morning Uncle Doug thank you for posting these wonderful videos. I don't think I would have been able to fix what I have fixed already if it wasn't for the videos. Do you need the amp to be plugged in for the heart shape cam work? My guess is the answer is no considering I think you were moving yours by hand. Which I cannot do. you also had a video in which I believe you stated the amp was unplugged and your cam was still moving.
    I have a 1015 Wurlitzer jukebox and the Heart shaped cam does not want to turn. Seems like it's jammed or maybe even it needs oil. I see the oil marking on the Cam unit. What type of oil should I use? Also what other things on the machine should be oiled? This machine has probably been sitting around for about 30 or 40 years without any use in my Dads basement.
    Everything else seems to be working properly. The Cam seems to be jammed or not moving easily like the one I seen on your video. The rotary arm does release the star wheel but after that there's no movement from the Cam at all. At that point the machine tries to grab a record but doesn't then the record player comes down and the star will get engaged again by the rotary arm.
    I had the motor rebuilt for the jukebox. I can send you an email video if you like but I would need to know where to send it. Therefore see is easier than trying to explain what I see. thank you for the information so far.

      Greetings, Diane. You can normally turn the heart-shaped cam by hand, but (of course) no portion of the mechanism should move unassisted, with the motor unplugged. My advice is to purchase a Service Manual for your jukebox and utilize the diagrams within to aid you in your repair efforts. Good luck.

    Excellent and detailed presentation which looks and sounds like it's from someone with a background in the education field. Mechanical engineering in those days was very innovative and creative. What record is playing at the very end? It's a catchy tune.

      Thanks, GJ. Yes, I was a classroom math and science teacher for many years. I'm not sure which record was playing.....I've changed out the selections since the video. Perhaps a viewer will recognize it.

    • @gjensen4585
      @gjensen4585 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for confirming my guess! Such a methodical, organized, and detailed presentation couldn't possibly have come from anyone who didn't have a lot of experience in teaching, not to mention this model of jukebox! I am just a humble electronic and IT technician, but did work on a lot of turntables back in the day. What is nice about mechanical systems, is they can be observed visually which makes them somewhat easier to understand than electronic circuitry. That must be why I've often been questioned about how I am able to understand electronics - it's more theoretical, and although you can measure voltages, currents, and waveforms on a scope, it's necessary to be able to visualize in your mind from the schematic how the circuit works. I guess this comes easier to some than others.
      I may yet buy a 1015, after I've finished helping out with post-secondary education costs for my 2 daughters - ha ha! I don't care for digital music sources so much, give me a vinyl record any day! I sure like the sound from the tube amp and nice big speaker of this jukebox - great bass and bass line in that selection playing at the end of this most excellent presentation!

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome, GJ. We truly appreciate your nice comments. After a lifetime of working on them, I too feel more comfortable with mechanical devices that lend themselves to visual evaluation, but have found the transition to electronics to be much easier if I maintain a mental concept of them as electron-flow (and thus somewhat "mechanical".....or at least analog) mechanisms in which the internal movement is monitored with scopes and meters, rather than simple observation.

      Greetings, Andrew, and congratulations on your recent acquisition. Trying to verbally describe these maneuvers is quite challenging. Your best bet would be to open the front door and locate and unscrew the screws that hold the frames (containing the plastic pieces you want to replace) to the door front. Once you have the frames in your hands, you will be able to see how the plastics are held in place....and you can exchange the plastic inserts. Good luck.

    Hi Uncle Doug! Great video, thank you for posting this. I am in the process of restoring a 1015. I now have everything operating properly from the coin in to the correct record selected and the mechanism will start playing the chosen selection. Trouble is that as soon as the platter reaches the top playing position it drops and the whole thing starts again with the next chosen selection. This process will repeat itself over and over until all selections have been started and shut down. The platter will not stay locked in the up position so the record can play more than a couple of seconds? Basically I am stuck in a permanent change cycle. The Dog leg has been removed by a previous technician and replaced with a small switch. and solenoid combination which locks the catch in place until the tone arm is moved, which then activates the small switch. This seems to be operating properly but is not how the service manual or your video shows the end cycle, so I cant troubleshoot this. Do you provide phone service, I would be willing to pay for your time to discuss this issue if that is possible? Thank you for your time and excellent videos!

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Long distance troubleshooting of complex mechanisms is generally unfeasible, Stefan, but I'll try. When the turntable reaches its highest point, a knife blade disengages the player mechanism from the fiber gear, leaving the turntable up and in playing mode, until the tone arm swings inward, hits the dog leg, lifts the knife blade, and allows the mechanism to lower the turntable and go back to rest. Somebody has replaced the mechanism that accomplishes this with the shutoff mechanism for a W-1100. This can probably work, but you need to find out why the knife blade is not disengaging the player mech from the fiber gear.

      I guess they do it for noise-reduction, Z, and the fact that the fiber material will hold oil lubrication......but these fiber discs tend to act like fuses and fail at the first sign of excess resistance in the operation of the mechanism, and they are devils to replace. Not a good combination.

    I looked at the service repair manual but couldn't find one
    i am working the motor directly with the light socket to have it running (as explained in the manual)
    I does run and every thing looks great but it goes in a loop
    i.e. the cam that is responsible to hold the rod that holds the plate just never stops revolving
    this causes the mechanism to start all over again and it do not stop at the cam (upper peak position (to allow the record plate to continue revolving) it jusr drops after the cam continues to revolve
    what should happen when the cam reaches top position and why mine continues to revolve?

      Andrew, you need to get a 1015 Service Manual, which is available from Victory Glass Co. in Iowa (and probably many other places, including Ebay). The manual has diagrams and describes how to make adjustments in the mechanism. If I told you that "the dog leg trip arm needs to be adjusted outward to delay initiation of the shut off sequence" (visible at 7:50 in the video) it would probably make no sense, but with the manual's diagrams and descriptions of the parts and how they function, it probably would. Happy holidays to you too :)

  • @SeeburgMusic

    So you didn't go into the torsion spring, which is a point of a lot of issues, and also is an important part of the operation of the mech, in as much as how it can can continue cycling after locating a pin. I think it would have been good to touch on that.

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The video was directed toward people with a casual interest in jukeboxes, SM, and I think a rather esoteric topic like that, although important to the function of the mechanism, would probably be overkill :)

    @tarstarkusz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    How does the jukebox keep track of what records were selected and in what order and how many songs you have left?
    Will the tracks even play in the order you selected them or will it play in whatever order the records are already in.

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is an array of 24 solenoids. Each time you select a record, the corresponding solenoid is energized and pushes out a pin that stops the selector mechanism and makes the jukebox play that record. The pin is reset back in the solenoid once the record is played. The records are played in numerical order, not in the order they are selected.

    Uncle Bob: I have inherited a vintage Wurlitzer 1015 and have cleaned all the rods, levers, and all joints. Then lubricated all known spots with the proper oil. I also took the tone arm off to install a new cartridge and wires. Also installed the new cartridge bracket. The cartridge seems to be seated at an angle. Have checked other lollipop tonearms on the internet and they all seem to show the cartridge at a slight angle. When I tried playing my jukebox records the tone arm doesn't start in the right spot and then when I put it in the right spot, it plays fine for awhile then ends up staying in one spot on all records. Hello. I inherited a 1015 but it continues to play the same record over and over again. I had a jukebox repairman said the star wheel had a bent prong. So I ordered a new one. Is this something I can do by myself if I am not mechanically inclined? It has two screws that I take off but I don't want to mess it up. Your thoughts. (The repairman is better with older models).

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since the Wurlitzer selector mechanism is basically unchanged from their very first 1930's models through the Model1100 in 1948, I don't understand how any repairman could possibly have experience with "older" models than the 1947 Model 1015. That said, you can carefully bend the arms of the star wheel to restore it to original spacing and condition. However, since you already ordered the part, then be careful to install it right-side-out, identical to the old star wheel. I warn you however that there are many, many different adjustments required to make the mechanism properly, and without a service manual and lots of experience, it will be quite challenging. Good luck.

This is because the Pin and Washer Assembly (30320) is on the wrong side of Selector Drive Ratchet Assembly (30327), thus it cannot turn the shaft. Greetings, FG. I no longer engage in personal consultations, but can offer some advice on how to eliminate the jam. With the motor unplugged, hold the reject button in and reach in and turn the universal joint by hand forward to see if you can manually advance the mechanism to the shutoff position. If the U-joint spins freely, you may have to manually slide the shutoff fingers into engagement in the fiber wheel slots. If the U-joint is jammed, then back it off a bit and try to figure out and resolve the cause of the jam. If none of this makes sense, then perhaps you could order a service manual from Victory Glass Co. on line. Good luck.

      There should be a credit/cancel unit bolted to the mechanism, with a copper-colored gear that looks like a saw blade. This gear is advanced one tooth for each credit (i.e. the deposit of a nickle in the coin mechanism) and is decremented one tooth for each play. Once it gets back to zero position, it will shut off the mechanism. Yours must either be missing or not functioning properly.

    My 1015 suddenly stoped turning the records. The arm that raises the records is not going up far enough. I can raise it by hand and the record will turn and play. Haven't been able to see why the arm isn't going up higher. When I lift it, the pin engages the coil spring and t all turns and plays. Can you clue me in on what is wrong?

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's impossible to verbally explain what's wrong in any meaningful way, Thomas. Your best bet is to closely observe the mechanism as it operates, determine the cause of the malfunction, and correct it. Good luck

    Excellent video !! Thank you -- but isn't certain parts supposed to be greased and oil/lubricated? It looks nice clean -- but it looks too dry...

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you liked it, TB. Lubrication should be limited to the articulating surfaces. Unfortunately much of what is wrong with most old jukeboxes is that oil was simply slathered all over the mechanism in hopes that some of it would reach the proper locations. By carful observation of the mechanism in motion, you can locate the majority of lubrication sites.

    Hi Doug --- GREAT videos! Question if you don't mind: I just got an early 1015 which plays 78's. It is set on free play, and was perfect on 1 and 2. I then installed records 3 and 4. 3 played perfectly, but I got no reaction from button 4. Then when I tried 5, it cycled to 24, and then 23, 22, 21, 20 etc etc. I finally turned it off.
    When I turned it back on, I got no response pressing any of the buttons.
    Does it sound like a simple problem to you, or do you think I should call for service?
    thanks!

      Streamliner 1000 Greetings, Eric, and thanks for the kind words. Selector problems can be real tricky to resolve in an electric-select jukebox like the 1015, and may require some disassembly. If you are not well versed in the intricacies of the mechanism, you might be better off seeking professional assistance.

      carlo baghdoyan This is a complex mechanism, Carlo, with all sorts of delicate adjustments necessary to make it work properly. I strongly suggest that you buy a 1015 repair manual from Victory Glass Co. in Des Moines, Iowa USA. It will show you, step-by-step how to repair and adjust your mechanism.

    I have a question regarding my 1015. No matter what selection I make it always plays 18. And it will continue playing 18 continuesly with no regard to the machine having any plays remaining. Any ideas? Thanks. Michael

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apparently either the selector mechanism is not cancelling the solenoid pin for selection #18 or it is physically stuck on that selection. You'll have to watch it closely to determine which it is. Good luck.

  • @adofmsu

    Do you think the gears are fiber so that can be sacrificial in the event something gets jams? They would be a weak link that would "give" so that the rest of the mechanism be saved.

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      adofmsu This is a possibility, Ad, but since the fiber gear is such a nightmare to replace, you would think they would have selected a more accessible part to sacrifice. I tend to think it's because the fiber soaks up and retains lubricant, and the metal-to-fiber interface allows the mechanism to run more quietly.

    • @pkav8tor
      @pkav8tor 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Uncle Doug.....I am a mostly retired mechanic/machinist that has rebuild many old mechanical things. I have machined several drive gears from Delrin with great results in their adaptation. It is quiet and self lubricating. While being tough, it will shear under sever loads. Would this work well as a modern replacement for the fiber gear, or would that be a slap in the face from the purist crowd? (love you stuff...thanks for sharing, Greg

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your welcome, Greg. If you could machine a Delrin gear with rather thin teeth that could withstand the torque demands of the jukebox mechanism, and be quiet and self-lubricating at a reasonable price, I think people would welcome it with open arms.

    • @pkav8tor
      @pkav8tor 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where would I be able to procure one so as to measure the pitch of the teeth and the other relative dimensions? I enjoy the challange of the build, the marketing is not what drives what I do. As far as withstanding the torque, Delrin has proven it's durability by being the material of choice in almost all modern small drive systems.

    • @UncleDoug
      @UncleDoug  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can order one from Victory Glass Company in Des Moines, Iowa. www.victoryglass.com/victoryframe.asp I would offer to send you one, but I don't currently have any uninstalled fiber gears. Unfortunately, they have gotten to be rather expensive, but this may make your venture more practical. You might speak with them to see if they have any interest in your Delrin concept. Perhaps they would provide a loaner gear for free (?).

      Perhaps the selection mechanism is sticking in an extreme position (top or bottom of travel) and needs some lubrication. Other than that, I am at a loss.
