I like all of the games I have shown in this video. I do not think that any of them are bad.
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood is my favourite Assassin's Creed which is why I used it here. I stopped playing AC after Revelations as I didn't really enjoy 3.
While some enemies later in Arkham City require a different strategy to beat, often they are extremely difficult or impossible to beat without the correct gadget. GIMMICK combat is not the same as GOOD combat.

This game was massivley underrated. It's so amazing. The fact that it is so unique and satisfying to play is enough to give this game a 10/10 for what it was trying to accomplish 👏
It will beat the shit to all of those open world fighting games if they remaster Urban Reign.
Same gaming mechanics, Same enviroment and same content but with better graphics and online multiplayers for Coop and so much more DLC.
If I was working as a game developer and remastering Urban Reign game for PS4 or PS5 I would be right now at this moment swimming in a money pool!
Not sure you know it or not but If you want to play something unique and satisfying you probably want to checkout Def Jam Fight (or def jam takeover the spin off on psp) you can mix fighting style in this game

Urban Reign had reversal, comeback, combos, aerial grabs, weapons, animations and everything to be the best game ever.
Considering it's made by the same people as Tekken, right down to the animations.

You are absolutely right about this game making you "work for it". Back when I was about 12 years old me and all of my schoolmates were playing this and we would always tell each other how "I'm stuck at x level", or "I couldn't beat Jake", or "dude the Chinese guy is impossible" etc... You had to fight each boss 5 or 6 times until you gathered enough experience about the fighter and about game combat in general to keep advancing.

I agree with your assessment that fighting has been dumbed down in modern open world games because they're trying to do a little of everything instead of focusing on being really good at one thing. However, I would also add that I believe the industry has dumbed down gaming in general in order to appeal to the masses. By appealing to the lowest common denominator (ie. casuals), the industry will gain a larger audience and make more money in sales. That said, From Software seem to be leading the charge for a resurgence in challenging games. hopefully this continues.
Agreed. The types of games that do lots of things do so in order to try to appeal to a wider audience and therefore can't be too in depth or difficult or the majority of players would struggle.

That’s only unlocked after you beat the game the first time, so by your second playthrough you should be pretty good at reading oncoming attacks, especially when they telegraph so hard.
Edit: that is to say, it’s hardly a challenge because you already know whats coming. And I’m sure if you take an average fighting game player and make them play Batman, after awhile they’ll start to forget the lightning bolts are there.

Playing this game now. Wow. Just pure fun. Just wish it had an action replay option and a more coherent lock on target system. It seems they hadn't perfected the R3 camera control too but apart from that I love this game.
The video is spot on - they have forgotten how to make games FUN. Tony Hawks 1+2 and Ace Combat 7 on PS4 are the only modern games I've played which provide a similar hit of instant gratification and also require technical mastery to complete.
Imagine this online, 60fps? Battling it out, you and 3 friends, all with a different weapon equipped, ready to beat some ass? I need it!

@@levonwilliams7256 ya it’s getting high in eaby tho it used to be 60 now it’s 100 but usually a ps2 comes with controller memory card and games and it’s still worth it I mean it’s the best console and i got mine on shopgoodwill wich is cheaper then eaby I got a fat ps2 with memory card controllers and all the cables for 40 dollars but of course the composite cables they give sucks component cables is better plus there is upscalers and mods in the ps2 to force upscale but I mean if your not a nostalga freak like me and you know how to work with trouble shooting on pc use ps2 emulators there good and you get 60 fps high resolution no anti alaising and it’s free games and ps2 has the best games so emulator is also good there improving emulators more in more too

I miss this game needs a remaster
I still play Urban Reign, and even when I take some long breaks from it, when I come back, it takes some time for me to get the hang of it. That's the beauty of Urban Reign, it always challenges you when you are not in practice.
I've never heard of this game until this video. I was genuinely surprised by the quality of the animations. Some of the grabs and throws here look genuinely better than some games nowadays. But it also looks FUN. It goes to show the absolute supremacy and library of the PS2 era. I'll miss it. I hope the next generation of young gamers gets an era like this.
God hand and Urban reign on ps2 are awesome games i played,urban reign is best brawler i've played,i like the way its made,its very unique and satisfying when playing(only if you've played story mode and mastered every move),mere playing in multiplayer mode for first time will not let you master it.

At 6:04: My trick is to activate the blue power with "Park" (character dodge and reversal every attack) and stand still. The CPU will try to attack you but will lose Spirit and I gain spirit because of successful dodging.
This game combat system is a master piece, I am a big fan of fighting games and beat em ups on 2d, never got a 3d game who could mix those concepts well into his mechanics. Never had such fun getting owned by the cpu, and plating coop with the 2 player cheat code was a blast. Can remember getting owned by the 2 big guys from the stage previous to the end stage, me getting owned and watching my bro getting beaten on the surroundings. Literally laughing in tears.
I even bought 4 controllers and a multitap just to play this game with friends. Massively underrated, def jam fight 4 ny was great too, but this one was better, the coop camera was better tho.
Other game I used to play a lot in 4 player was spawn for dreamcast, loved it.
This game is art. Personally, this is one of my favorite PS2 games of all time. Everything about this game hold up. And what's interesting as while it's hard, it gives you the tools to defeat your enemies. That opens up opportunities and I am always learning something new.

Thanks for this. I was looking for good 3D beat-em-ups that weren't God Hand, and I managed to discover Urban Reign. I saw some gameplay videos and the great combat animations reminded me of Tekken, which is no coincidence since it's the same developer. But I didn't know anything about the combat mechanics themselves. Your video sold them to me and convinced me to try it out. If this game is as good as you say it is, then it may very well turn out like God Hand in that it also becomes a cult classic in the future that in the past was also unfairly maligned by scrubby critics.
Anyway, since I don't have a PS2, the only way I can play this is emulator. I'm not gonna ask for a ROM, but rather I want to ask for emulation settings. Would you happen to know the best PCSX2 settings for this game?
I think just the default settings on the latest nightly build of pcsx2 should be fine. Probably works better with directx than opengl. I have a feeling that certain namco games do a weird thing with upscaled resolutions so you may need to do something with the hacks like align sprite or the wild arms offset, maybe skipdraw, in the graphics options. Vertical lines appear down the screen on some games without one of those hacks, but I don't remember which.
If you go to emulation.gametechwiki then there's a page about the best place to download ISOs and ROMs for every console.

A year ago, I completed all of the 100 missions with an S rank. It was a challenging, sometimes a bit unfair yet a fun experience. Especially when you needed to play with a sub-par partner or even a bad character yourself, while on hard (or even very hard) difficulty.
Thanks for reviewing such a classic and underrated game that was well made for us fighting game and beat-em-up lovers. This needs a remake or sequel, with the modern technology it'll be amazing

Japanese games have always had superb beat 'em up and Hack and Slash combat, no matter what year their games were released. I think God of War (2005) was the first Western game to truly have a polished and satisfying combat.

I don't really think it's fair to compare Urban Reign to open world action-adventure games, when this one is a straight beat em up.
I was elated to find this at my local mall years ago. Great brawler to this day.
I still miss this game even today. Me and my buds always considered it as a 4-way Tekken, which is actually right up our alley as we basically grew up playing Tekken and Guilty Gear.
I said it, Urban reign has one of the best and most challenging combat in video game history, it is a game for hardcore beat'em up fans.

I grew up loving beat ‘em up games on NES and arcades. Ps1 had some good ones but the Ps2 beat ‘em up were the pinnacle of gaming. Always disliked open world snooze fests or RPG but the majority of people don’t understand what fun is. They like collecting flowers, armors and “exploring” a mediocre open world garbage. It sucks how game devolved into walking simulators, amazing graphics but 0 fun factor.

I was so happy that the PS3 was backwards compatible...then my fat PS3 broke and I couldn’t play this game anymore. I still have the disc hopping one day a new PlayStation will play old games again
Props to Ninja Gaiden Black as well. Enemies also swarm you in that game rather than politely take turns to hit you.
Most action games today use the combat system pioneered in Assassin's Creed which make them rather samey and boring to play. Shadow of Mordor is a good example of this (I would rather they use a refined version of the combat system in LOTR: ROTK than the former).
Namco Bandai should make another beat em up using Tekken's 7 animations as a base. Release it as a digital copy to cut costs, probably.
I would also like to see another Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks using MK11 technology.

Oh man I remember playing this game with few buddies for two full-day straight without sleeping cause we wanna beat it without saving it cause our memory cards got damaged 😂 😂 they end up falling asleep one by one at the last two hrs of the game 😂 I finish it and went straight to a long deep sleep like a hibernating bear
Urban Reign is the most exciting game I've played (and still playing it) and for sure the most underrated. Characters animation are the same of Tekken so they are TOP quality, the hype and fun is guaranted when you play with your friends and if you own a multi tap. Namco, give us Urban Reign 2!

I never heard this game before I tried it in a demo disc. I was instantly hooked on the gameplay and seek it out and bought the game. Unlike game like Devil May Cry that I still didn't finish, I kept playing this game until I finished it.

Dude the multiplayer on this game was the best me and three other friends would play this game every night beating each other up and you needed to actually be good to win not get lucky . The weapons were also the best just an absolute gem of a game masterpiece

I was hoping that Brad Hawk was some sort of Season Pass Character for Tekken 7.
I played Urban Reign when i was like 10 y/o on a ps2 demo disc and never got my hands on it actually. But now through the power of emulation I beat it multiple times. The unlocks and Free Mission Challenges are insane and the fact you can literally play them as everyone makes it even more fun.
But I never got to unlock Bordin sadly.

a few days ago i started to play musou games (A.K.A dynasty warrior games) i wanted to play some gundam games cause "dynasty warriors gundam 2" was one of my most played in ps2 since i was a kid, and then one thing lead me to another, i was looking up to emulate other great titles with this question in my mind "how easy could be this game now that i have so much experience behind" when i was a kid i just couldn't handle that many games, but i loved the hard ones, i wanted to test myself and started with this one urban reign, i first go to practice to test controls and combos, then when i realized you can evade attacks mashing a button, i was kinda dissapointed until i played the game, fuck me this IA is aggressive.

Fantastic game with perfect mechanics, i played it in 2022 just because i had memories with it
It's a really good fighting system. Urban Reign got average ratings by critics, and I'm still not sure why. Moves are gracefully animated and look brutal, there's a lot of interaction with the background, and if it's too hard, you can adjust the difficulty to suit you. Also, you're right... this "jack of all trades, master of none" mindset isn't working for video games anymore. Why play a Grand Theft Auto game with a dozen different distractions when the core of the game is no fun?
Mostly because it's extremely repetitive. There are 100 missions and only a handful of characters (or to be more specific, movesets) and scenarios.
Have you played judgement or it’s sequel lost judgment? Worth a try if you haven’t, especially since the combat is better than the Yakuza series it’s spun off from.

Holyshit all of this is so true! The moment I played urban reign I was like damn this is nothing like I have played before and it is better than all of them rewarding and punishing at the same time. You absolutely cannot button smash to complete this game. You will have to learn the moves and the difficulty levels in this game are well appreciated! It becomes so frustating sometimes but I always come back to it. It is hands down the greatest hand to hand combat game and is damn underrated!
This game was awesome. Just got back into emulation not all that long ago and this was one of the first games I yoinked up. Still one of my favorite fighters ever. Chris is fucking broken.
Can't believe I forgot to mention this, but this game was actually a joint project between the Tekken and Soul Calibur teams. Don't remember the specifics beyond that, but that's why there are similarities to both and why Paul and Law are guest characters.

I agree the combat in so many games is boring and easy that's why I've never been too interested in games like AC, Batman or any other similiar combat style game.
I wish the Yakuza/judgment series would strive to make a game this difficult.

The Arkham combat system was invented by a somewhat obscure PS2 game. Jet Li: Rise To Honor. A lot of people don't know this.
