This was one of my grandpa's favorite movies. He use to quote it all the time when I was younger. Then he would start to howl with laughter at Jackie Gleason's antics. Every time I watch this movie I always think of him. I love this movie as well. Canonball Run movies are just as funny and they have Burt Reynolds and Dom Delouse in them. Definitely worth a watch.

Paul Williams wrote the music for THE MUPPET’S MOVIE and the song EVERGREEN with Barbra Streisand. Won an Oscar for the song with her.

mom was a fairly strict Christian. when growing up for me in the 80's even going to the
movies was considered "bad". she lightened up a bit as she got older. no exaggeration, I
don't recall mom going to the movies after Star Wars in '77. so in 2011 she saw commercials
for the new Planet of the Apes movie and I know she's wanted to go. I convinced her to go
with me. my 65yo mom and her 45yo son went to see Planet of the Apes together in big comfy
recliners on a giant screen. we had a great time. after that we'd watch some newer movies at home while Blu-ray was still a thing. thanks mom. I miss you.
When this movie came out, me and all my friends wanted a 1977 Black/Gold Trans-Am. Love this movie' and y'alls reaction.
The irony is that this was in the early days of smog regulations, and "performance" cars were choked down and underpowered.
@@dr.burtgummerfan439 yep that T/A only rolled out the factory with 200 hp ( This is why we called Firebirds of that era in the mid 70s Firechickens) the and detuned 400 cid for a car that heavy was nothing when only 7 years before in 1970, it came with a 345 hp 400 cid just 88 of the 3,196 Pontiac Trans Ams built that year (70) got the optional Ram Air IV. That one added bigger ports, better heads, swirl-polished valves, and an aluminum intake manifold for 370 horsepower, 25 more than in '69. Rarer still was the Ram Air V, an over-the-counter, special-order piece that counted among its tricks solid lifters and tunnel-port heads for as much as 500 horsepower. I know my T/A's they were my favorite muscle cars in the late 60s and early 70s
This movie was filmed entirely in Ga. Sally was 31 and Burt was 41.
Growing up in England, this was a regular feature in our house - practically wore out the VHS tape! I hope you indulge in the 2nd and 3rd Smokey's but before that...treat yourself to Cannonball Run. Love that your mum showed you this. And yes ... that Burt Reynolds...swoon 🤩

Feel good movie of my childhood, seen it countless times in the 80s. In fact I think it was one of the first movies my dad recorded off the TV with our old VHS.
I was in the Army stationed at Ft. Clayton, Panama and we didn't have cable in the company day room and only got the armed forces channel and they showed this movies like 10 times over the space of a few days and the soldiers absolutely loved it. I must have seen this movie 4 or 5 times and boy did I also love it and laughed my butt off. Plus people my age loved Sally Field from Gidget and the Flying Nun and we all loved Burt Reynolds who was a big movie star back then. :) . Oh my army enlistment was completed, I went through college ROTC received a degree and Officer's commission and when I finally came back in the army as an officer, a new 2LT and my first car was a brand new that year Trans AM. I guess this movie made an impression on a young soldier!
It was in Cosmo that he did the centerfold. It was an experiment, and I think that was the only centerfold they ever did. Playgirl showed everything. In Cosmo Burt strategically covered himself.

Some of the outtakes are floating around the internet, seeing Reed tryna jam the truck into gear with his infectious laugh is hilarious. If you ever get a chance check out his music he was literally a genius on guitar and influenced just about everyone of significance and still continues to inspire after death
Jerry wrote a lot of songs about different life styles. Every thing from the kinda spooky Amos Moses, to his truck driving songs. My Dad’s favorite truck song (he was a long haul driver) was the song “ Caffeine, Nicotine,Benzedrine and Wish Me Luck “. Jerry didn’t write the song but his version is the best. I read in an interview that Burt picked Fred out of a group of dogs because Fred refused to do what he was told. Chasing him across the pond was real. It has been said that Burt and Sally were kind of a star crossed couple. They both thought very highly of each other but just never made the jump past really close friends. In one of his last interviews before he died Burt said one of the big regrets of his life was not getting together with Sally.
If you liked Jackie Gleason (who reportedly ad-libbed most of his dialogue in SMOKEY) you might want to check out THE HONEYMOONERS and THE HUSTLER for which he was nominated for an Oscar. He died in 1987, nine years after making this movie. Other classic Burt Reynolds movies: THE END, DELIVERANCE, WW AND THE DIXIE DANCE KINGS, SHARKY'S MACHINE, and SWITCHING CHANNELS.
The Hustler is one of the greats.. A precursor to the 70’s auteur movement.
You don't tell the Great One that he has to say the lines as it's written in the script. You tell him that he can ad-lib where he feels his character would

We showed this movie while I was managing the State Theater, 1400 seats, Anderson Indiana. We sold 5400 tickets on Saturday, 5 showings, house record for the theater, and people were lined around the block between the 7 pm and 9 pm shows. I went around and told them not to leave, that we had plenty of seats, we did big theater, but 1000 people waiting in line might make some wonder.
See profile pic - this movie came out when I was 5 years old, and it has been my very favorite movie ever since. There's one detail that eludes a lot of people, in one of the movie's best scenes. When Snowman grins and crushes the bikers' motorcycles, that's a callback to a very old trucker joke. It goes something like this:
A trucker is quietly eating his breakfast and drinking his coffee at the lunch counter of the truck stop when a half dozen outlaw bikers stroll in. They try to pick a fight with him for fun, but he quietly ignores them. They call him names, pour out his coffee, even spit in his food, but they don't get a response. He just pays his bill and calmly walks out the door.
After he leaves, the bikers all laugh to each other, and one of them says, "Well, he wasn't much of a man, was he?" The waitress, looking past them out the front window, says, "He's apparently not much of a truck driver either - he just ran over all your bikes." 😆
So when Snowman sees their bikes all parked together right in front of his truck and breaks into that smile, he's thinking to himself, "I can't believe it, I actually get to be the punchline of that old joke."
One more thing: "Deliverance" (1972). Burt Reynolds, Jon Voight, Ned Beatty in "Deliverance". You've already seen "Boogie Nights", so go back to the movie that made Burt Reynolds: "Deliverance". AMAZING movie. Reaction video gold. Another super "iconic" masterpiece of the 70s (or of any time) that doesn't have nearly enough reactions for it. Who's with me on "Deliverance"?
Here's a fun fact the motorcycle cop near the end is Sonny Shroyer who played Enos Strate in Dukes of Hazzard the series from 1978 to 1986
Also the chap on the left at 4:22 is Ben Jones aka Cooter Davenport from the very same show. And apparently in the very last scene when Sheriff Justice resumes his hot pursuit one of the men in the crowd to the right of his car as he drives away is John Schneider aka Bo Duke. Then the following year in 1978 Burt starred along side the great James Best asks Rosco P Coltrane in Hooper.

Here's some trivia's trivia: Sheriff Justice's hat is a Stetson Open Road, one of the oldest styles in Stetson's line. They've been making them since 1937. Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, and Johnson each owned at least one. They make them in six colors, but I've only seen people wearing them in the color Stetson calls Silverbelly. It's the color of both Sheriff Justice's hat and mine.
Incidentally, "farkakteh" means "crappy" or "shitty" depending on how much emphasis one wants to put on it. Sally's Jewish enough to know a few Yiddish terms.
Reynolds blew it with Sally, mostly by being unfaithful, and he regretted it for the rest of his days. He said she was the love of his life, and it was his fault for not treating her right.
The motorcycle cop who pulls over Snowman and gets the finger from Frog is Sonny Shroyer, most famous for his role as Enos Strate in the original Dukes of Hazzard tv series. He was also in another movie with Sally Field. In Forest Gump, he was Forest's football coach.
Jr, the groom, is Mike Henry who played Tarzan and other Reynolds films.
Every cop in the southern US LOVES this movie.
There is an annual (and illegal) Bandit Rally road race, where participants race from Atlanta to Texarkana (and buy Coors beer) and back.
I remember my dad taking us to see this when it was released. It was so much fun., particularly Jacie Gleason, who was still immensely popular with The Honeymooners in constant reruns. Imagine a bunch of kids going around saying "sumb*tch" every chance we get. My father thought it was cute, but it infuriated our mother. 1977 was a great year for cinema, with this movie being beaten on by Star Wars that year.

My dad took us to the drive-in in the Bronx when this came out, and me and my brothers was quoting from this movie every chance we got. It was good, old-fashioned, do not take serious, suspend all rational thoughts and logic FUN!! And I watched it every time it came on broadcast television. Even with the language dubbed, it was absolutely hilarious. And it was great to see Jackie Gleason in something other than The Honeymooners, where he was equally hilarious. Thanks Mom for showing this to your son!
Smokey and the Bandit is a classic
Apparently you are unaware that the police (especially the state police) in most places are called Smokeys because of the style of hats that they wear. Their hats are quite similar to the one worn by Smokey the Bear in all of the posters, film clips, etc. where Smokey is the spokeperson (spokesbear?) for woodlands fire prevention and is famous for the iconic line "remember, only you can prevent forest fires". Thus, the term "Smokey" is given to, in a somewhat derogatory way by the general public, the law enforcement units that wear the same style hats.
Btw, as well as being an award winning country singer and songwriter, Jerry Reed was also a world class guitarist 🎸.

When my dad and I used to race cars, the guy who did a lot of fabrication and chassis work for us built a few of the stunt cars for this movie. He raced NASCAR in the late 60’s, and was a semi-successful chassis builder for a few teams in the late 70’s and 80’s when he lived in Atlanta.
There is a video on TH-cam where Burt talks about the stunt at the youth football field. When you talk about is was a miracle nobody was killed, you ain’t kidding. For some reason, the woman stunt driver went about double the speed she was supposed to, and nearly caused a major problem. Near the end of the scene, you can see a little girl very nearly runs in front of the car right before it goes through the building. Luckily, she turns around at the last second.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. So much so that after watching it one day I decided I wanted to drive a truck myself for awhile. Been doing it for almost three years now and love every minute of it!
John Schneider from Dukes of Hazzard appears as one of the guys taking apart the car at the beginning. Enos from the Dukes of Hazzard is the motorcycle cop.
First off: super happy you've already seen "Boogie Nights"! We need WAY more reactions to that masterpiece! Second: I don't know if Nick knows how fitting it is he's wearing his "Star Wars" shirt; "Smokey & The Bandit" came out six days before "Star Wars" did! That was the summer of Star Wars....AND Smokey & The Bandit! That gets lost in the sauce! "Smokey" was a big hit that summer as well. And then in November and December we got "Saturday Night Fever" and (the coup de grace of the year) "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind"! The "grown up" movies that year were - as usual for the 70s - groundbreaking, brilliant and one-of-a-kind: Annie Hall, 3 Women, Eraserhead, Sorcerer. (Would LOVE to see you guys react to "Annie Hall"!) ("Annie Hall".....and "All That Jazz" from 1979. PLEASE put those two on your list. Not one reaction yet for "All That Jazz"!) PS: By the way, to anyone reading: Sorcerer followed by Star Wars is a fantastic double feature, the only way I ever watch Star Wars is directly after watching Sorcerer. Try it, you'll like it! Sorcerer - which has action so intense I thought I was going to have an ulcer - is the ultimate 70s movie, a 70s approach to action/adventure. And it tanked....because Star Wars came out around the same time! And when you finish Sorcerer....the breezy, light action of "Star Wars" is like inhaling helium. It's such a great release of tension after "Sorcerer". And you acutely feel the "sea change" of how "Star Wars" is going to change the trajectory of movies.....and also what was sadly lost when that happened. The contrast between the two is unsubtle and it makes you appreciate both.

Not exactly a sloppy Joe, it's more like spicy taco meat, with sour cream on the bun. Knowing what one is really adds to the scene, the way the sheriff is stressed out, wolfing down the sandwich while he's yelling, and gulping a Dr. Pepper!😂
Five stars for Mom, eh! Good call! A can't-miss comedy classic. Any superlative you might choose to employ would probably ring true.

The one-liners in this movie are so funny even today it was made in 77 opened the same weekend as Star Wars did and came out on top Jackie Gleason made this movie with his one-liners, Jackie Gleason was also in The Hustler with Paul Newman also had the Mom from the Steven King movie Carrie Piper Laurie ( Who just passed away not long ago at age 91) as well as George C Scott that was made in 1961. That T/A only had 200hp as this was just at the end of energy crisis from the mid 70s so the Government kill the HP wars with the big three in the early 70s

Have you ever watch the cannonball Runs movies.., I recommend the 2nd one. Cannonball 2. It has Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise and Dean Martin along with Sammy Davis jr. Just to name a few stars. Also a Cameo appearance as himself.

I hope you guys go and do the sequels. They're varying degrees of bad, but they're crazy and fun too. Jackie Gleason is never not watchable.

Wait a minute. J. W. Pepper was in Live and Let Die from 1972, and The Man With The Golden Gun from 1974. This was from 1977. So who inspired who?
Burt Reynolds' dad. He was police chief of Jupiter, Florida, was apparently very good at his job, and was also apparently a caricature of a blustering southern lawman straight out of central casting. Half of Justice's dialog, including "sumbitch," was Gleason riffing on what Burt told him about his dad at dinner once, and brilliantly spinning a whole character out of it and cracking up the entire table of a dozen people or so, years before the script was even written for this movie.
