I wanted to make myself a super frilly, ruffled, and lacy dress and matching pinafore apron, inspried by Candy Candy, an anime from the 1970s that was super popular in Korea all the way to the mid 90s. So for after looking through a lot of Candy Candy art, I've designed, drafted, and sewed the dress, and found an awesome pattern to make the apron with.
What I'm wearing: Yellow dress from www.linennaive.com - Code SEWSTINE for 10% off

OH MY GOD I haven't met anyone else who grew up watching candy candy. Such an emotional rollercoaster. I haven't watched it in a long time but, she goes through an obscene amount of hardship but is somehow still extremely resilient. Highly recommend

If you want to try sketching on your own proportions rather than a model's, you can take a photo of yourself and trace your outline, either digitally or on paper with carbon. You can make as many copies as you want, and they're you! I find this gives me a better idea of what I like on myself, since there are styles I like in general that I just don't feel look great on me.

Wow, the history behind Gingham fabric is so surprising! I always assumed Gingham must've been a British town or person that was somehow connected to the fabric. Little did I know it's actually Malaysian! Gingham just sounded so British to me haha

@@lauraarkless-mckie5899 I'm American, and did not know that was a thing! Just looked up M&S school uniforms and.... You're right. They're terrible. Not full or swishy or fun in any way. What a tragedy!
In the USA gingham is associated with the very fullest, frilliest dresses possible! It's considered very "country" but also quaint and cute. It's an inexpensive fabric, so poor farmer's wives and daughters would splurge on lots of it and sew very fluffy dresses to feel their prettiest for the county fair. Also popular for curtains in bedrooms or kitchens.

I did not watch very much animation or cartoons as a child because my parents disliked it as well as anime/Japanese style faces (not going to read too much into that right now) so I never watched these show, that is until March 2020 when my travel plans were cancelled. I binged Studio Ghibli, Nippon, World Master Theater. I fell in with love Candy Candy, Daddy Long Legs, Georgie, Lady Lynn, basically any 1970s through the 1990s shouji style cuteness! I also read all the manga and brought merch, and made art based on the characters

I love the finished product! The frills and lace are so perfect! This is similar to a little red riding hood dress I made a decade ago, I even used the same inspo, and an identical gingham! Yours is much more finished though. I opted to make an open front shirtwaist and incorporated the apron directly onto the skirt so the only actual closure was the apron tie at the back. That made it more flexible, so I have been able to lend it as a costume to a wide variety of body types over the years. Yours feels so much like real clothes 💖

Ahaha, poor Ida! I always pitied her so much, life with Emil is hard indeed. :D

Please accept my best wishes and prayers for your health 🙏💗🌷 . Interesting history on gingham. Look at chicken scratch and see if this is something you could embroider on your machine if you want to use gingham again 😉. As for the apron it is gorgeous 😍! The fabric and beautiful Swiss laces with bows show how outstanding it really is! Definitely for special occasions!
Christine your saying about Do what you gotta do to get it done ✔has good merits to it...when you zig zagged the lace pieces on. So beautiful 😍💖 Yum jasmine tea in a China cup and saucer ,the best!

Congratulations ! You have made art with your dress and your apron. Both are very cute, and you are si elegant, pretty and féminine with it. Me too, although I am a man, I like wearing such aprons, but I préfet cross-back aprons, but this one is very beautiful .

I have a gingham dress that I made many moons ago that just wasn't *right* when it was done!
I think I may redo it with ruffles on the bottom! Thanks for the inspiration!❤

Candy Candy was shown in Poland in late 90s, I've never watched it but always wanted to. It's on my "do watch/read" list for 2 years probably and this video made me want to watch it earlier!
I'm a fan od classic XIX century/earlyXX-century girl literature and how there used to be many animated adaptation. I also like series that are made from scratch as a homeage or pastiche like Nadja of Tommorow or Loulou de Montmatre and Ballerina movie. And Candy Candy hopefully
