Zestiria had a few things I liked, and a lot of things I didn't care for.
Extortion-rate charges for fast travel until into the late-game, when you could have actually afforded them, is one of the most troll developer ideas I've ever experienced implemented.
I hate the water dungeon, but love the earth and wind ones.
    Baller dungeon/ segment themes.
Story doesn't actually happen until 1/3 in. Before is painfully dull and latter is straightforward to the point of being boring.
Combat can actually be fun if you find a character you enjoy playing as.
Armatization was broken, but that made it fun.
I kind of liked improving weapons to keep them relevant, but it could get grindy.
The game has an odd penchant for removing playable characters to replace with same-slot fillers.
    ????
    Has Edna, so 10/10.

Glad you liked some points about Zestiria. Although I didn't enjoy Berseria like I did Zestiria and most of my friends had the same experience as mine, I won't argue about something that's not even a matter of logic but preference. Preferences are personal so subjectivity can't be avoided, but tbh, this gaming review we're reacting to sounds more like a RANT from a drunk guy who can't get over a nasty break-up.
Zesty isn't perfect... no game is... but even the clunkiest game in the universe has some good points if you somehow like it and grew up with it. This rant just repeats everything that's been said about Zesty and after 5 years? I wonder what the REAL motive is. I smell something FISHY. And it's NOT EVEN MIKLEO. I heard a lot of bad things about the sponsor of this discussion... and it's sad because I've been in other fan sites and and reviewers who talk like this get to be called TROLLS.
For example, if you hated Cavill and said something this toxic about him in a Brandon Routh or Tom Welling fan site or any other Superman fandom site you'd get called out as weird and TOXIC CANCER. Only gaming sites tolerate this kind of "review" that sounds worse than a drunk man's fart telling us what stuff he binged on that made him smell so much. And it's definitely NOT Zestiria. ^_^

@@buttertoast1146 Zestiria had the biggest budget among Tales games. It was supposed to introduce the other Tales games to the West, which Vesperia and the earlier games were supposed to do. The music alone was more costly as they hired major bands and musicians to interpret the songs while the VAs for the anime and the game had to be the same talents who could work on the project on a long-term basis. They had to hire more than twice the usual number and had to coordinate with former character designers for the other Tales games to work on the character designs of the MCs (which also belies the rumor that the game was unfinished or was rushed). it took four years to complete the game prior to its release. It was supposed to be released in 2014 but they took more time so the date was pushed to 2015...

The problem with Zesteria is that in many ways his oversimplification is the story. 90% of JRPGs follow the same stock plotline which Zesteria follows to a T. A young male lives in an idyllic life in his hometown until one day an evil villian strikes his town pushing him to leave home and confront this evil to save the world. Along the way, he encounters a variety of quirky characters who join him on his quest as he works hard to help all of humanity out along the way. While this stock plotline does find itself various deviations, it almost always will follow this plot style. There's nothing inheriently wrong with this archetype but when you use the achetype in and of itself it tends to create a simplier story that is often of poorer quality than what it could have been. JRPGs designed for more younger audiences tend to get away from this problem more easily because it feels more natural for kids (who typically have a clear moral perspective) to enjoy and comprehend the plot. For more adult/teen content, however, most people look for more meat in their stories. We want morality that doesn't showcase a clear good or bad all the time. We want that rich complex moral system that exists in reality where some actions are morally ambigious and challengable or debatable.
Tales of Zesteria baited a lot of people with that rich complex moral system. At the start of the game, malevolence is a natural product of human wickedness or wrong actions (akin to the Japanese concept of kegare). However, it is treated as natural which is an important concept. You can purify or cleanse yourself of this wickedness with little ill effect. Your contamination doesn't automatically turn you into a demon or make your a monster. Humans can be saved or sanctified of their evil/corruption. This is an Eastern representation of the good-evil moral spectrum. In Eastern traditions, there is a path to cleansing the system to save one self from corruption. There is always a way back rather than being trapped in the path of evil. This allows the moral system to be more grey as people can always make ammends and restore balance in oneself spiritually as opposed to being morally bankrupt and beyond hope. The Western tradition takes a clear good or evil approach without much grey moral ground. If you are a demon, you must die. If you did an improper action, you must be punished. We very much value this idea that actions are permenant marks on one's soul and concept. Therefore, you can never be saved and there is a point of no return for humanity. This two traditions are pretty difficult to work in conjuction as a result. It's difficult to justify that there is a definitive point of no return in a system that can purify one self of sin. Conversely, in a system that believes there is no redemption, the only option is death (which in the Eastern tradition is in of itself also an incorrect action).
Tales of Zesteria tries and fails to merge these two concepts into one game and fails miserably. The second Rose enters the scene the entire morality of the story shifts around Rose. Rose can't produce malevolence so any decision she makes is the story's "Objective, clear definitive answer" to any moral quandry. After all, Rose can't be wrong or she'll produce malevolence. And even if it's because of some inane idea that you have to 'believe your actions are right' then that doesn't explain why Sorey and Rose are both the only two people who believe their actions are always right. So then, every single person in the world doesn't believe remotely in their decisions and thus is constantly violating their own principles and ideas? Rose has never once questioned that maybe she killed an innocent person or a victim of circumstance that didn't completely deserve it (cough Cardinal Forton cough cough)? Human belief in oneself is an extremely vague way of trying to explain the morality system and doesn't work on paper when even Alicia has some minor malevolence (otherwise the characters would note she was pure as snow). Instead, the game seems to imply that Rose and her viewpoint is the moral right of the world so therefore we should agree with all her actions and never question they are wrong. In turn, the main characters can never be questioned or be allowed to question their actions. Why doesn't Sorey show some shock and horror that he almost killed someone? Why isn't there an arc of Sorey coming to grips with the idea that he's going to need to spill blood (they barely do this in game with him just suddenly gaining the willpower to do it right in the final areas of the game)? It comes across as simple once you realize that the game was originally showing promise of this moral ambiguity and questioning one's actions. However, Sorey never doubts himself enough and for long enough of a period to bring this subject to life. Conversely, we're never allowed to consider the remote possibility that some hellions contain humanity still. Since the only option for killing the hellions who conviently are beyond purification, that essentially says all hellions are pure evil and must be destroyed. Meanwhile, the side stories reinforce this idea of a definitive good vs. evil narrative that frustratingly simplifies and hinders the story going beyond what it entails to deliever on its own promises. Imagine a story where an idealistic youth is forced to confront the moral ambiguity of his new role in society and juggling with the idea of what is right and wrong. For many people, that sounds far more entertaining, enriching, and complex. That's what Zesteria promised and failed to deliever hence why Berseria was made to rectify that issue. It is also why a lot of us call Zesteria's plot simple because ultimately it is simple. Most of the complicated parts are just not compelling when the narrative has no moral complexity to back it up (what happened to the Lord of Calamity is morally complex to an extent but then essentially becomes a story of evil man getting punished out of revenge but Sorey never asks himself if that is what he could become. He never questions how far his morals will last before he becomes just like all the others). As a result, it just comes across as another JRPG with a simple moral story that doesn't feel as compelling because of the poor delievery to a plot that could have done so much more.

      Couldn’t agree more, seriously.
Y’all this is a long read, but pls read it all, I seriously wish more people could realize what I’m about to say about this game.
*AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGHHH,* This game had so much potential, it could’ve been sooo much better. The story was a really good one but the execution, depiction, and character development wasn’t strong, there was’t huge impact, so it totally undermined the grandiose feeling it should’ve had ( specifically the grandiose feeling that it did have in its anime that was later released.) The scenes, action, and gameplay in the game were also just… not good. At all, precisely the action. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate this game and really liked it, even though it often got a bit boring. I just appreciate it for what it was made to be, it’s actually one of my favorite games cuz I saw beneath all its flaws. That’s really the only reason I can still love the game. If u need an example, just look at the anime and how visually and stunning it looked when it came out. It was EVRYTHING I wanted the game to be. I definitely feel like the game was missing the *GORGEOUSLY* animated fast paced, flashy spectacles of action from the show, which seriously made the characters and seraphim seem MUCH more capable and unique. The storytelling and lore in the show was wonderfully done. And for the bit of character development that the game tried to pull off, the show did SO MUCH better. a few examples are Edna and her brother and sorey’s fight with him, Mikleo and Sorey’s friendship (was really wholesome in the show) Rose’s determination and honor as an assassin (also has a much more serious tone in the show), Alisha’s role as the princess of Hyland and the things she’s seen about the world that she wishes she could change. And OH GOD, HOW COULD I FORGET- The show does an AMAZING job of depicting the conflict that the balance of their world is rapidly becoming increasingly fragile, and may crumble all together at any moment if the malevolence isn’t suppressed to tip the scales. The lore of the world was really well done through the storytelling. I mean, just watch the first episode of season 1. It had me going sheesh, I didn’t know the malevolence was THIS much of a threat…If you know, you know. If you’ve watched episode one, Need I say more??? (No really, if u haven’t watched it, go watch episode 1 of season 1 and tell me it didn’t do a much better job of setting the tone than the game, I wanna see what u guys think, even more so if you’ve played the game. I need someone to tell I’m not the only one disappointed after seeing the show and seeing what the game could’ve been. By all means, don’t just stop at episode 1, I don’t even think you’ll wanna stop there.) Playing the game, I already knew it was an amazing game with flaws that detrimentally overshadowed how good it was intended to be. Seeing the show just made my so upset because it was so good. Yes, because it was so good, so much better than the game. Because it validated my disappointment with the way the game turned out, and confirmed my disappointment with what was missing from it. Lastly, the world in the show looked beautiful, and so very visually stunning. It seemed fleeting and grand, and honestly a work of art in and of itself (idk if u guys can relate to that last bit, I’m an artist and very detail oriented so visual presentation and craftsmanship to me is everything, and small little details go a long way.) But like I said before, it’s one it’s still one my favorite games, and I still love it for what it could’ve been.
Oh, and the soundtrack had me in awe, Go Shiina’s gotta be a genius musician, idc what anyone says. 😤 the man’s music is so good, I instantly know it’s him whenever I hear it any show or game. (Def got me hyped while watching demon slayer and playing code vein.)
This game definitely needs a remake but considered how badly it was received by the audience *sigh…* I can only hope. Seeing Tales of Arise made me want a remake sooo bad. It has the action, the story, the visual representation is very satisfactory and visually pleasing. And the serious tones and character development seem to come across pretty well too.Tales of Zestiria done like that, while putting in all the aspects and elements that I loved from the anime would seriously put my mind at ease. It still keeps nagging at me how much potential Zestiria’s game had that wasn’t fleshed out.

Don’t forget to see episode of season 1 of Tales of Zestiria if u haven’t seen it, and by all means finish the anime, it was really good, and the animation was *STUNNING.* If you like the animation for Demon Slayer, you’ll *LOVE* the animation in Tales of Zestiria’s anime, I guarantee it.

I mean I do love the cast, the soundtrack is phenomenal, and I really did appreciate the effort that went into the overworld. That said, the story is very weak on its own aside from a few moments, the pacing is pretty bad, and this game has one of the worst combat systems in the whole series. It’s fun but incredibly clunky and unbalanced as hell. Also screw that Iris Gem sidequest. That just screams of padding.

Then fast forward to 2019, I picked up Tales of Berseria. And loved every minute of it, which made me want to go back to Tales of Zestiria, to see if they already had an idea of what they wanted to do with Berseria back when they released Zestiria. As you shouldn't most people including the youtuber here love to forget certain points in Zestiria which actually make many of the characters choices better, which is the actual reason as to why Sorey becomes the Shepherd. He said that the MC didn't have a strong reason but that's nothing but bullshit. The mere existence of Malevolence is a strong reason for anyone to join the fight, moreover Sorey lived with Seraph, he was raised by them and Malevolence is pretty much Kryptonite to them. Exploring ruins is nothing but the MCs hobby, not his driving force. All I could see here was how biased people are when it comes to Zestiria.

If I were to compare Sorey with past protagonist then he would be.... somewhere around Caius, Ruka, or Cor/Shing?
Zestiria's best casts are the Seraphim hands down, the human side were..... meh. Rose doesn't has half the spunk of Magilou unfortunately. Alisha isn't even there albeit she would make something like Chloe from Legendia. Zestiria needed more backstabbing honestly, would be nice to have Alisha backstab Sorey for a change.
The problem with the certain points are that.... it was a bit too late to even start talking about it. When it gets down to it, the story seems to want to salvage itself in similar way with Tales of Hearts and it was.... a good try. The problem is that a lot of player might already lost whatever interest they have with the story so it was a bit too late to salvage things. Personally, when I reached that point it was just such a drag that my mind only wanted to hurry up and finish the damn game so I can say goodbye to it. It also ranked 8th best game in Europe outdoing any other JRPG title. Most reviews like this sweep those under the rug and give people the impression that they're alone in liking the game. Zestiria is also the highest selling game so far among Tales. So it's gotta be good for a lot of people to be buying and playing it despite the abusive rant and hate sh*t in many game sites.

Y'know, things might have turned out massively different in this timeline. At the time of Berseria, Lailah and her sword were in the lake between Taliesin and Aball (Velvet's hometown).
Arthur would have come from Taliesin to reach Aball, so imagine if he'd found Lailah and Siegfried's sword. He can see the true appearances of the demons in the opening cutscene, which means he could also see Malaks like Lailah. Just being able to see and talk to her was what convinced Lailah that Sorey was worthy of the sword, so Arthur easily fits that bill as well.
So imagine if instead of discovering Inominat, Artorias discovers the Silver Flame and its ability to purge the malevolence from demons without killing them.
Just imagine. Celica might have never met Arthur, Laphicet would have died from his sickness, Velvet likely never would have become a demon, the opening probably never would have happened, etc, etc.
Also ngl I really want a new Tales game to explore the events of Lailah's past adventure with Siegfried, which would predate even Berseria.

You have to walk around as Sorey. In every other Tales game, you can customize and run around as any of the characters, and it's assumed the party is traveling together. I understand the choices may be limited in towns because most people can't see Seraphim, but you also can't run around as Rose after she joins the team for some unexplained reason? I initially bought Zesteria because I loved Xillia and REALLY wanted to be either Edna or Alisha in towns/the overworld... After several hours of playing and realizing that wasn't an option, I came to loathe Sorey's character design and running animation with a passion.

I played Zestiria before playing Berseria, and Vesperia before Zesteria (don't @me). But i generally liked the characters, the plot, and loved the experience going through the game, even though it felt long and sometimes I said "hey, I seriously hope Aliesha is doong okay," I liked how the plot went down, mostly. Although I DID have a problem with Aliesha being pushed to the wayside for Rose, I didn't nind Rose for the most part, even though I wished that they at least acknowledged Aliesha while Rose was in the game.

Honestly the most memorable thing about this game is that crossover that lets me take those artes and beat the tar out of a massive electric tiger with them

I was hoping you would talk about Christopher Niosi as the wind seraphim. I was personally interested in this game because him and little kuribo are friends and collabed a lot (especially on yugioh abridged and Tome)

My biggest issue wasn’t even with the story, writing or characters, was how difficulty scaled and that on higher difficulties you could only keep up by grinding zones killing the same enemies repeatedly for xp and stat bonuses with the clunky combat.
Made the already poor pacing even more jarring with how much time you’d spend between advancing the plot or developing characters.
Eventually found the most enjoyable way to play the game was actually just to start on the hardest difficulty and slowly drop the difficulty setting as you progressed through the game when you eventually hit a wall of content becoming too difficult and out-scaling you because you didn’t grind.
Fought the boss on easy but it was actually still a reasonable challenge because I was a lower level than him when I reached him.

Grinding is nothing new, nowadays most people aren't used to grinding as you can just pay money for the stuff.

@@creaturetransylvania8943 I don't mind grinding in an MMO where you have different means and seemingly endless options to grind, I do mind grinding in a singleplayer story driven RPG fighting the same 2 enemies in the same zone over and over where the combat is not the shining star of the game in the first place.

@@Quotablenotables Only one way to grind, kill the same monsters over & over again,I like grinding.
      I'm not normal.
I really like fighting so even if others don't really like the combat,I will always like the combat of every game I play.

I like tales of zestiria but that probably because it was the first game I played when I got a PS4. Since then I have gone back and played the others though.

Well here was my experience with System Error:
First booted it up and noticed that the opening did not have vocals which was odd considering Vesperia, Xillia, Xillia 2 and Graces F all had their opening songs fine. But I payed no mind to it and continued on. Then after a few hours in liking Alisha, game said nope good bye princess and hello thief girl......despite the fact that I believe there were still towns that gave you spear weapons but Alisha was no longer with you and SO MUCH praising for Rose which made me think that the director may have loved Rose a little too much. Afterwards, I found myself getting more and more bored with the game from the story to the characters to even Generic Ganondorf and even the gameplay, while it did get better, honestly it too bored me after a while. So then I sold my copy, heard Berseria came out on PS4, bought it along with my PS4 a few more years later and THAT became one of my favorite RPGs, especially in terms of story and my girl Velvet compared to Shinji. Long story short, I much prefer Tales of Berseria over System Error, deleting the fact that they are connected and instead take place in different universes and that opinion has not changed one bit. Although, when my friend told me about the DLC that gives Alisha a story, he told me about a scene that was ruined by something very stupid........I SO hope that it is not the catfight because if so........shudders. Anyway, great job Ram!!!!

You're actually wrong, it's a setting that can be turned off, you can move freely in battle whenever you want. I have never used that setting because it feels stupid.

As somebody who bought both Zesty & Berseria at the same time on a whim to get into the series I heard that Zesty wasn’t as good so I went through it first and while I wasn’t crazy about it I enjoyed it enough and was excited to see all the improvements since I heard Zesty is often called one of the worst in the series while Berseria one of the best. Overall I certainly appreciated Zesty and I don’t regret doing it first but yeah probably not a game I’d replay.
