  • What does it really cost you if your planter is not set up correctly? Over the past four years at the PTI Farm, we've designed an "all wrong" study where we get three major planting settings all messed up. In this week's episode, Jason is sharing those results!

Have you been able to make row cleaners work on a John Deere 1790 interplant planter in 15" rows on corn?

Great video. Your work is highly appreciated.
Do you have any study reports/videos on planting Sesame?
    That will be highly appreciated.

I call BS on this. I’m not saying these upgrades won’t help, but I highly doubt they can be payed off in one season, unless the operator is blind. It’s hard to justify spending more on upgrades than what the planter cost. I assume you can get 90% of the benefits by tilling the ground and planting slower. That’s my opinion until someone plants side by side with me in the same field and proves me wrong. If they do I’ll gladly buy every do dad they sell.

On flat, black, non-variable soils, the technology could take longer to pay obviously. However, if a grower has soil variability, the technology could pay off very quickly.
Don't forget if you have to increase or add tillage passes, that's also a cost that needs to be accounted for. Planting slower as you mentioned could also add cost for some as well.
Measuring is the only method to determine if we can be better. If you know where you are at on the measuring stick, it tells you how much improving you need to do. As long as you know your numbers, you can make an informed decision. Without it, it's just an opinion.
