  • This TH-cam channel is about me Sven Yrvind. I am85 and 9 months old dyslectic solo sailor. I am adapting a modest size 30 year old 17 feet, 5.3 meter long high latitude canoe cruiser of my own design for a sail to Dunedin in NZ. There I have been promised an ice cream.
The route will take me south of Cape of Good Hope, Africa and Cape Leeuwin, Australia.
The voyage is not only intended to be one of pleasure. With two of the three great capes done I believe that if I continue east and round Cape Horn. I can argue that a small boat is seaworthy and that will be good for the man of small means.
Often the 22th every month I do a resume of the project.

g,day Yrvind, how are you ? well I hope. About your Rudder. you will have a small umbilical tether won't you? just as a back up on the off chance the bolt breaks, consider the weight and force of an obstacle or Orca. Just need to have on board a few replacement bolts should the occasion arise. a short stainless steel cable should do the trick. I imagine you've already considered this. All the best regards from here on the west coast side of Australia.

I am not familiar with what is commonly done at sea, but when I saw you were going to use 316L bolts my first thought was what about chlorine stress corrosion cracking? Perhaps a 400 series bolt might be better?

A certified silicone bronze bolt might also make a better choice. These bronze bolts never fail when used as keel bolts and dont get crevice corrosion like stainless steel. High grade duplex SS bolts might be another choice. These are rated to not corrode even when used underwater. I would also use a nylon thread locker nut with some thread locker liquid. Even some lead point on the bolt will act as theread locker. Amazing how life boats can sustain a 30 meter drop with no damage and they are foam core as well. Yrvins construction reminds me of this kind of solid engineering.

This boat is over engineered . Just like boats should be. Redundancy is crucial..

Thats good to see, so many skegs, rudders and windvane failures these days. Its good to see some solid engineering and construction practice. During the golden globe hydrovanes were having issues with simple things like bolts failing or coming loose. Totally ridiculous for a 6 thousand dollars expensive piece of equipment.
