This documentary illustrates what a formidable campaigner she was, but also why she never really had a genuine chance of becoming leader. Much like Thatcher, she thrived on conflict, but too often that conflict was with people in her own party whom she should have been trying to win over. She ended making far too many enemies - that included "In Place of Strife" for which the unions never forgave her. Too many people in the Labour Party found her much too hard work, including many on the left, where she might have expected to find support. Michael Foot summed it up nicely here, saying that for him "peace in our time" meant getting home from a holiday with Barbara.
Thank-you very much. This is a wonderful documentary. ❤ Do you have anything from Reputations? I’ve been looking for the episode about Hugh Gaitskell which was narrated by Anthony Howard.
Many achievements to her credit: Equal Pay Act, Sex Discrimation Act, breathalyzer etc One less well known one is that she saved the canals for leisure use, stopping them getting filled in.
She took it up, whereas most ladies might not, but some Oxbridge men did. She was the mistress of many men as alludes as well as Mr Castle.F his families. She didn't care. She wanted it and wasted it.
What a shame her and Mellor treated an innocent woman (his wife) so disgustingly. Glad his wife stood her ground and didn't give in to them, she had a child to consider.
I believe she was until what happened with the trade union legislation in 1968 which doomed her with the unions I believe she should have and would have been better then Thatcher and better policies !
Very enjoyable. I remember Andrew Marr describing her as “five and a bit of gunpowder and vinegar.”
This was brilliant and a bit surprising in places. We had proper politicians in those days…on both sides. Passionate woman in every way it seems.
A formidable woman.

My socialist heroine! Thanks for uploading it
What is the song at the end?
@16:05 with Michael Foot, with whom she used to sunbathe on her roof
Sun bathing with red hair & pale skin is unlikely to be a winner!
@21:00 🤣 Harold Wilson on hemlines
@35:45 Jim Callahan 🤣
And Barbara came back with a zinger “ah Callaghan. Nuff said “ 😂😂

She should have succeeded Wilson instead of Callaghan. She would have stood up to the unions during the Winter of Discontent. ❤
49:04 lol.
