    As someone who was accidentally part of a cult that was labbeld as a wiccan coven, it is so so so important to be careful when joining a coven. I ignored the warning signs, the abuse and the problems that it caused. This cult actually did the hazing thing! The leaders were toxic and when I left they became very angry and shunned me.

      No joke I did the same thing when I was a teen. No physical abuse but it definitely was not a coven. Makes me feel better knowing I wasn’t the only one!

    One more note on the other name thing: if they are pressuring you to pick another name (or change aspects of your personality to suit them or disassociate more), that is a huge red flag. That is a cult tactic to separate you from your identity, and make you more easy to mold and manipulate. You never have to have another name or change an aspect of yourself you don’t want to!!

    • @ligeiaztomb2755
      @ligeiaztomb2755 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      100% agree....huge dissociative cult tactic.
      If YOU chose your own name for your own purposes and keep it to yourself that is different. I subscribe to the old "names have power" so I don't share mine....but I am also solitary.

      I want to join a coven but I’m 15 and that would be too dangerous but I’m open to it In the future

    • @deactivated9188

      @@Jayden_gemini You can definitely join a coven at 15 - just as long as you watch out for the warning signs well enough. I was in a coven when I was only around 12-13 and it wasn't dangerous at all. Digital covens can definitely be a lot safer (especially for younger witches), I think, but obviously you still need to be careful. I'm pretty sure there's lots of young witches on Tumblr and such that have digital covens so that might also be a lot less dangerous!

    I have one addendum: I advise people to be very cautious around leaders/teachers who forbid them to go exploring on their own, be it by having contact to practitioners outside the group or to practitioners of different spiritual or magical traditions, or by reading non-sanctioned material or, in the very worst cases, to practice on their own at all. Those teachers need to answer the question of why they are doing that and the answer needs to be better than "because I want to protect you (from what? Knowledge? Broadening my horizon?) / keep the tradition pure / etc.", as in my experience there is more often than not some sort of powerplay involved

  • @willow9912

    If someone is new and wants a place to meet more people they should definitely join Hearth's discord, it's not a coven and just a community of free witches. People are amazing, you will be welcomed and respected, no one behaves like they know more than you or are better than you, they will help you to learn, you will make new friends.

    As a coven leader, seeing how other covens can actually be cult-like, really scares me. Especially when baby witches or beginners in general join them and are pretty naive/susceptible. It is SO important to make sure you look for these red flags.

    In case this is helpful to anyone on any sort of medications and worried about it interfering with their magickal practice; I am on SSRIs for depression and anxiety and I have found being on medication not only improves my mental health, but also my magickal practice. When I'm not on medication my own energy is too chaotic for me to connect or direct and I can't discern my own energy from that of others. I'm an intuitive empath and I find a lot of other people who identify as intuitive or empathic also are prone to anxiety and depression. I don't think medication should be sought out specifically for managing magickal energy, and that has not been my motivation either, but if you need to seek medication or any other sort of medical intervention for your personal health that choice is in alignment with your highest good and should not hinder you.

    • @kimberlysharp2780

      So perfectly said, Amanda. Thank you for sharing this. It is my feeling that too many believe that either they cannot practice while taking properly prescribed medication or that they will be shunned because they take medication. "...that choice is in alignment with your highest good and should not hinder you." PERFECTION! 💗

      I agree, so well said. The part about being unable to discern your own energy from that of others when you’re off your meds really hit home. When I was very ill I couldn’t go outside because other people were too painful to be around. It was painful when I was alone but no where near as much. Thank you for the thought provoking insight. I hope you are doing well now, three years later!

    I wish I had seen this video before i was dragged into cult dressed as a coven. it can be so scary, and traumatizing! its ripped me away from my spiritual path and for the last 3 years ive just been trying to get back on track. i learned so much misinformation, and became so out of touch with reality that i couldnt listen to anyone who told me that something was wrong or uncomfortable about the situation. Don't take these red flags lightly! almost everything she said was happening during this time. Im hoping to one day find a coven when im ready and re learn the foundations with people who are trustworthy and looking together instead of in a hierarchy. thank you for making this video Hearth, i think its so important that all practitioners are aware of these things when stepping into the spiritual world.

    Thank you for this important video!
    In Germany there is a coven called "Die Mondtöchter" (The Moon Daughters) which is run by a man (I think he is in his 40s) and only accepts (young) women. The reason is that only women can do magic.... Who can find the mistakes? Rituals are preferably held naked, at least there is the restraint, I have also heard of bans on wearing trousers and bras, saying it is unnatural for women. I am almost certain that this is just the tip of the iceberg of what goes on in this coven.

    Thank you for this. I think it goes without saying, but I'mma blab anyway, that these can apply to any religious, spiritual, social, political, group; even just a clique. And I hope that more ppl other than those trying to learn about Witchcraft, especially the young ,socially inexperienced and vulnerable (or those who are all three) ppl hear you out.
    Also, one of the Veterinary assistants at the lovely place my fur babies get their care is a pagan witch and recently she was present when one of our dear ones was ill and passing away. It was very comforting to know she was there for him when we couldn't be and even though the whole staff was wonderful during the entire event I feel she understood more how significant he was to us. He was scared and hurting but he clung to her, unlike anyone else there, the same way he would hide in my arms when he was scared. I knew, no matter what the outcome, that he was in good hands. I wish there were more witches in medical and medical adjacent fields.

    There is a group local to me whose “leader”/organizer basically only sends out 101-type information, in long messages in a FB chat, or invitations for a ritual. It is making me uncomfortable that this woman thinks we’re all newbies, and then wants us to have a monthly full-moon ritual together. Is it odd that I am uncomfortable attending/participating in a ritual with absolute strangers, where I don’t know what kind of ritual is planned?

    • @missyyouknow6002

    I really love this video, it is very informative. There will always be positives and negatives when it comes to covens. Like you have said there will always be those covens (cults) out there that are bad. I have been a solitary witch for many years. In my country (Australia) it is extremely difficult to find covens. Online it is extremely easy to join an online coven, but a physical covens not so much. Over here you must be invited to join a coven. When you're someone like me, who has extreme difficulties in socialising it's practically impossible to find covens. As with me I only have associates, no friends. That being said I am currently involved with an extremely small coven. I.e. myself and 1 other lady. We work together in real life. So, trying to pin down a time for meetings is extremely hard, as we are both on call. And either one of us can get called out. However, our coven feels more like a master and an apprentice. I ain't the apprentice. I didn't choose this, the other lady did. She's extremely green. If you ask me knowing her she'll be a great as either a green witch, hearth witch, kitchen witch or a crystal witch. I leanded her an extremely good book, which I hope she returns, lol. I would like to join a coven to learn from others, but not knowing anyone for me to get invited. Every country is different regarding to this subject.

    I have a coven with my partner, and we tend to put our "mundane" lives first, because life is important to live and we believe that education and work comes first. It is nice to hear what you are saying, especially because we believe that covens should be wonderful. Our is literally 3 and one "apprentice" who is very new in witchcraft, so we are helping him understand his way the best we can, even helping him with research. Again, thank you for saying all of these good things - especially about being cautious about age

    I agree with all but one thing. Although I do agree with age minimum, age maximum I don’t agree with. I was part of a group that there was a large age range, and we were all on the same level. It worked for us. I will note, no part of our group had anything to do with sex, though.

    • @katyalumi
      @katyalumi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i feel like the only reason there would be an age maximum is that if the minimum includes minors, they wouldn’t want anybody too much older than the minors. not for any magickal reasons, but just for the safety of the minors.

    Insisting on skyclad practice before initiation is a massive red flag. Good advice here.

  • @trixjoyce
    @trixjoyce 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't know if this is as much of a red flag as if it's the opposite, but what if a coven wants you to invest all of your time in them, but won't let you be a real member until you've worked with them for 7 (!) years and they really want you to be invested but expect you to wait for that amount of time for being a real member? Is that normal? My closest coven (I live in Sweden tho) expected me to invest all my free time in them but said they won't initiate me for a long time because the process of being a member is about 7 years. I thought that was strange because I had expected 1 or maybe 2 years. So I decided to not join. Does anyone else think this is weird?
    I have not found any other coven since then and I work alone now, but that's kinda involuntary... I would like a group. Hmm.

    • @HearthWitch
      @HearthWitch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is definitely a red flag. Typically a formal coven will require an initiate to join them for around a year before being initiated to ensure they’re a good fit both with personality and with practice. It wouldn’t be as much of a red flag if they didn’t require you to invest so much time into them. I understand needing someone dedicated to the group, but to require so much and yet not offer membership for almost a decade, it seems like they want to get your work without offering you anything in return.

    A coven that has no age restrictions would be a perfect hunting ground for pedophiles, another danger from such a group. Also, in Brandy Williams's 2011 book "The Woman Magician" (Llewellyn Worldwide), she says that after she was initiated into a Traditional coven, all the men in the group started hitting on her. She also noted that the High Priestess in charge of the coven was a housewife who deferred to her husband in the everyday world. Needless to say, Ms. Williams got out of that group as quickly as she could.

    If you replace "Coven" with "Grove" - this totally applies to Druid communities :-). I really enjoy your videos, Hearth. While I don't idetify as a witch, I find a lot of parallel ideas.

    your choice of makeup style, is there a meaning, reason, any form of symbolism behind it that is witchcraft related?
    Is it purposeful?
    I wish I had a better way to word this.
    For example does wearing black on your lips mean something?
    You absolutely rock your look, I was just wondering if there was a deeper meaning behind the choices.

      @@HearthWitch well you absolutely rock it. I’ve just always wondered if there was a reason. • @MotorZobop
      @MotorZobop 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crowley was a classic narcissist and quite abusive, and I'd say that the best materials in the thelemic corpus originate from sources other than Crowley. He gave a lot of license to others to follow their own lights, though, so there are plenty of people who have arrived at thelema and made something good of it. After all, much of it is simply redressed Golden Dawn

    Also you should note that if there is racism, xenophobia or any other societal red flags walk away. Norse Pagan community has some troubles with that right now. Also never take anybody's word as absolute truth. Look around for wisdom but learn to distinguish between what is common practice and what is questionable

    I am wondering about deities like, can you worship 2 different ones that are from different cultures? example (Nordic and Greek) and when you pick a deity/deities is it like they chose or you chose them and do you act like their friend or like a higher up (boss exc.) I’m just learning and have mostly been focused on energy and meditation, but I have been researching about the different gods a have found a few that is really connect with. If you have answers please help.
    Sincerely,
    A baby witch

    Is believing that you can only manipulate your own energy (not that of the universe or other people) a valid form of witchcraft? I've been interested and researching for about a year now, but I want to make sure I'm not appropriating or offending anyone before I start practicing. Any advice welcome, thank you in advance!

    • @MysticWhiteReaper
      @MysticWhiteReaper 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I personally believe that the separation of self from the universe to be an illusion but I don't believe that this metaphysical perspective is necessary to practice witchcraft. Your beliefs and your craft are completely valid!

    • @cassettetape7643
      @cassettetape7643 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, learning to manipulate your own energy is absolutely valid, and even utilizing the energy around you is just fine. Just take care about exhausting yourself. When starting out it can be easy to do. I've been practicing for awhile now, and I'm still getting the hang of it🙄. At first I needed to rest for a week or two before trying again because I was biting off more than I could chew without realizing it. But really anything you do with intention as a witch is valid. You don't even have to be a spellcaster, as Hearth herself would tell you. I'm not, & have no intention to be.
      But I will say I think you are wise refraining from manipulating others in any way (at least without their permission & certainly not when 1st starting out), as that can have very unpredictable & unintended consequences. As you practice, you'll begin to find your path which will become tailored to your specific unique witchy self, and it will be wonderful 😊☀️
