    For a quick idea about Ganna, have a look at the 2020 Olympic team pursuit finals. Ganna goes on the front with 2 laps (500m) to go and Italy more than 1/2 a second down and drags it back himself for the win. Everybody is doing 68kph laps, after 3 minutes at a world record pace, and he raises it that much :S

    • @Mike0

      Having a World record for both 1 hour and also 4km(4 minutes) would be unheard of in other spots

    • @michaelw7115
      @michaelw7115 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      True but you have to relativise the importance of the event/record. It interests very few pro/talented riders, just like many other extreme records (24h, 1000km, faired bike hour record (well over 90km), et. many of these are held by unknown cyclists. On the road Ganna doesn’t do that well, not even in TTs anymore. There are a few guys (maybe half a dozen) out there that would probably beat his hour record if they had any desire for such a thing. @@Mike0

    • @testetetet7504
      @testetetet7504 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@michaelw7115No way. It's true Ganna doesn't blow people out of the water in TTs all the time but the hour record is such a different beast.
      One reason not that many people are interested is that it is just incredibly hard! Saying people could do it if they wanted to just completely omits the mental factor and the track skill you'd need for the thing. Maybe (!) three people can beat top form Ganna: Wout van Aert, Josh Tarling and Remco Evenepoel. None of them seem to want to undergo the preparation necessary and the mental torture of attempting the hour record. There's no way of telling if they could acquire the skills and push themselves in the way Ganna can. Saying they "would probably beat the record" just extrapolates some of their TT efforts without thinking about the hour record specifics.
      And it is far from an idiosyncratic record. It is the most respected distance record and the only one that pro cyclists attempt pretty regularly. Of course, there's no money in it but comparing it to the 24h record or some other record pretty much nobody cares about doesn't really do it justice.

    • @michaelw7115
      @michaelw7115 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Look, nobody is suggesting it isn’t a beast and that preparation isn’t torture but to say that no-one cares about other records (which is basically true but then outside niche cycling circles the same is true of the hour record) is in no way proof of how much discipline, preparation, torture, dedication, thought and investment goes into those, all the more impressive because you stay a complete unknown for having achieved unbelievable figures, even by pro standards.
      Coming back to Ganna for this record in particular, he is just the latest in a long line that have broken this record since about 2015, one even raised it by a bigger margin than he did. All these guys must have had similar qualities and so will the next guy and believe me, the way tech has developed there will be a next guy because the main difference at the moment is technical, you can’t make me believe Ganna is physically so much superior to ride 5km more than anyone before 2015, he’d be unbeatable in EVERYTHING then. We have a long way to go until the HPV record of 92,5km which just goes to show how much difference technology can make at higher speeds.
      Heck, if Boardman and Obree had been free to continue using modern equipment they’d both probably still have gone further. Fact is you can no longer compare the riders unless in direct competition, it’s like comparing F1 drivers with cars 10 years apart.
      And those willing to try the old school UCI record test still can’t manage to beat Merckx, only 2 in the last 30 years have ever been SLIGHTLY faster on similar bikes.

      @@testetetet7504 From my readings, I would classify "The Hour" record as the single most demanding cycling achievement. And there being no great monetary prize, few want to attempt a record. Its nothing but pure pain and suffering with no let up for that hour.

    You blew up in 90 seconds going HALF the speed he held for an hour. The gap between fast and fastest is ludicrous. Cycling in particular is insane at the top level. Also Mark's mass isn't even much of a detriment in an event like this as you're holding a steady speed on the flat. The cornering forces add up though, this small tight track will be much less efficient than a proper velo and Mark's mass will mean more energy is lost in each bend

    This challenges sounds like pain, but just getting a bike going fast enough to make use of that banked turn honestly sounds like a blast.

    Mark, some of your best videos are of you trying new sports. This was so fun to watch! I think you should try cross country skiing and olympic rowing next, the real stuff. You know you can do the moves in the ergo machines, but how difficult is it to translate to real life? Also, these should make for some funny snow/water related crashes, with lower risk of injury than going full speed in a velodrome I suppose.

      If you would like to check the velodrome out, we run taster experience sessions. The feeling of riding around the steep banks is indeed incredible! www.hants.gov.uk/thingstodo/outdoorcentres/ourcentres/calshot/hangar/the-track/adulttracksessions

    Great effort Mark. Track riding is hard . It takes weeks to get ‘your track legs’ if you havnt done it for a while. You’ve never done it so to learn to ride the track and then do a kilo is certainly brave!
    Get some disc wheels in an aero tt helmet tri bars overshoes and a fast tt suit , train on the track for a few weeks and you will easily go faster than 1:30 for a flying kilo 💪🏻

    I'm a BMX guy and it's always hilarious seeing people try to exert athletically on a single speed bike.
    It's a lot harder than it looks!

    Oh my god, I rode Calshot many years ago and broke my collar bone when the rider in front of me swung off the bottom of the track, swung back up and straight into my front wheel. The fall felt like hitting a slab of concrete.

    I cycled there once. The faster I went the more sick it made me feel. Going as fast as you can around those bends is a very strange feeling. Well done.

      Now imagine what a track cycling coach feels like when supervising the sessions and keeping up with everyone going around. :) Your head can get dizzy from just looking, but the feeling of cycling on the velodrome is indeed incredible.

    Great video. Keep trying new stuff outside your comfort zone. Makes such goo viewing. I agree it’s one of those things that looks easier than I imagine it is. My only cycling is on a spin bike at the gym.

    Well done Mark. I enjoyed your video. In December I went to Calshot for the first time and loved it so went back for more in January. I managed a 12:97 for my fastest lap. Im only 9 and love all types of cycling. Would you ride on the track again?
