This is how I was raised. We rarely ever went to the store & never ate out. It was a wonderful childhood & your children will have fond memories of the life you have created for them. God Bless.

Yes this was the way I was raised also - never ate out either -- never seen a cereal box on our table either ♥️ homemade everything ♥️ and yes I had a wonderful childhood also - building a fire outside to heat up water for bathing - washing- canning - ringer washer - and as soon as I could reach the close line my job was to hang out the clothes and gather back in

I have been participating in this challenge from the beginning. I was going to do a huge grocery hall on the last day of December but following your advice I refrained. Now my fridge is getting more and more sparse. And I am emptying my canning jars daily. I am so proud of myself and my husband. I had him pick up sliced cheese for his lunches last night. But I don’t feel bad about having him do that because normally I would have had him pick up a whole list of things. I love this challenge, it is my first year participating.

When I was a girl we could hardly wait for summer to have fresh tomatoes and corn and beans. The rest of the year we ate canned veg and fruit. And then in the fifties frozen food became available….if you had a freezer. 😊 And we survived and thrived.

I feel this is why God gave us pines in the winter. They never loose all their needles and steeped is a great vitamin c source 😀💜 It's also "fresh!"😜

I grew up on a farm eating seasonally. I have a degree in home economics I got in Germany many years ago, so what you were talking about wasn’t new to me, but you worded is so well! It was a joy to watch someone on TH-cam who actually knew what they were talking about. It is clear you do a lot of research and thank you for encouraging others to do the same.

Perspective is everything - thanks for the in-depth look at what I need to know. Found so many new sites from this challenge and thanks for doing this! At 75, I need to learn a new way of preparing my food and this helps so much. I love to garden (tiny garden) and preserve (can, dehydrate, etc.) and since my daughter shares her family meals with me, it is not necessary, just wanting to learn and share with her, also. I'm following this challenge to learn new ways of using the food I've preserved and what else I can grow to help out. I love the idea of sharing some of my garden with another family! Finding many holes in my stocking and errors on ways to stock up. Too much of one thing and not enough of another - so much to learn but this challenge is so informative AND fun!

Hi Mary, I just want to encourage you on your way, and recommend keeping a notebook of your gardening and preserving. It's so useful when the same season comes round next year and you wish you could remember what you did last time, and it's also a lovely experience to look back over a whole year's worth of notes and see everything you've accomplished, and use it to plan the next year!

    • @iartistdotme

@@sabineottala3588 great recommendation - as a retired CPA, I still LOVE keeping records! But the satisfaction of reviewing old records to see what I had accomplished is a huge encouragement. Thanks for your reply as my memory keeps getting less and less, I do need to (not just to enjoy) keep those records.

I have been doing the pantry challenge along with you. I didn’t realize how much food I had in my pantry and freezers. I was thinking that because I was eating home canned fruits and vegetables I wasn’t eating very nutritious. You have given me a different perspective on “vegetables “ from the grocery store. Thank you so much for that. I have a sprouter and am going to start some today as well as salad greens for my greenhouse. Thank you from an Oregon coast subscriber. 💖

We were brought up this way. My dad would stop at the farmers market and mom would have everything put up the next day. Her canned goods were beautiful, tasty, and healthy. We had a large family and I know that helped the food budget. My mom canned, my grandmothers canned and my great grandmothers canned. It was a way to have healthy food year-round.

You covered this so gracefully!! ❤️ People haven't been so kind in the comments lately but you responded with grace, knowing they don't know about how food really gets onto our tables. I so respect you.
Also, been meaning to make sprouts again- my son will literally bring his own money to the farmers market to buy sprouts and happily munch on them on the way out. They are so expensive there but so easy to grow!! Also... he's six and just happy to have his own money he can "treat" himself with once in awhile lol.
Another fresh thing we have right now is basil! I overwintered a plant from this summer in the house and it's doing great! So we got some fresh basil on pizza the other night. It's not nearly enough for pesto or anything but that's a big enough win here. Other than that... Not much you can get "fresh" in MN in the winter. We're grateful for our winter CSA to keep going for another month or so as well (almost all of that is storage crops but I'm glad to support a great farm that stores them better than me!).

A good discussion, my daughter and I enjoy these kind of logic conversations about walking through what a seasonal diet looks like and why for where we are. We like to talk about items that are inherently long distance ( coffee or cane sugar for instance) it’s nice to hear your perspective.

I’m having a good time sorting through my pantry and freezers, “discovering” lost or forgotten items, and incorporating them into our meals. We are also focused on not eating out, so this has been a great opportunity for us to be more mindful of what and how we are eating in general. Thanks for your ideas!!

That’s a great explanation fresh vs raw and the nutrient content. I wish people understood more about how the supermarkets keep their food and how ‘old’ some of the ‘fresh’ food really is.
I’m looking forward to Sundays video- I’ve been joining in this years challenge over on insta. Making fresh bread every day and finishing up the last of the ‘fresh’ produce, lettuce, carrots and cucumbers this week, so next week will need much more planning, but I’m excited to use our freezer and stock cupboard/pantry. xx

I agree with you! They were not shipping items in the dead of winter for most of history of mankind! The items you have stored in your cold pantry are wonderful for consuming! Your canned goods are amazing as well. Growing lettuces or greens when you can in your area is good as well. I do agree that some of the shipped goods in winter to our stores don’t even taste like real food!! I don’t believe the nutrition is there either. I am in awe of how non-wasteful you live; using everything possible! The chickens benefit too. I learn from you too. Blessings and keep videos coming. It encourages me to be a better person for my family!

Sarah, at Living Traditions Homestead, mentioned your challenge. I'm doing it - don't have a TH-cam channel or Instagram account - but I'm doing it! I sort of did it in December because Covid knocked me down for three weeks or more, and that went well. December 31 I bought about $15 worth of groceries to restock, so I'm pretty well set for the challenge. Who knows, I might try to go longer!

  • @Minnesota_Mama_Bear
    @Minnesota_Mama_Bear 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Great information. I bet you made a lot of people stop and think about their grocery store food. I started our winter sprouts the last week in December. We go through about a quart jar a week. I only put a tablespoon of sprouts in a quart jar. I could never have 3! I did use a half-gallon jar one time for more. It worked great, but the 2 of us couldn't eat it fast enough. I like to set a canning ring in the bottom of my draining bowl to keep the sprouting jar from sitting in the stinky drained seed water. I also make sure to rinse the seeds 2 times daily. My favorite way to eat the sprouts is in a bowl with a little salt. It tastes so much like radish that the salt makes it the same as eating a fresh radish from the garden. Blessing for a wonderful weekend. After tomorrow we may have 10" of fresh snow & 35-40 mph winds. That won't be fun to deal with. I think I'll be hunkering in for the next couple of days. 💚🌞

Love the knowledge that you share with us. It is my first year of the pantry challenge, and am learning so much from your videos and coming up with improvised recipe that my husband loves and are now adding to out meal plans. We havent gone to the store yet, feels a little wierd yet so satisfying that what we have is being used up, and am searching sites for more old fashioned recipes. Last night I used a bone broth cube that I froze to add flavor to my veggie stir fry & rice and was such a great addition. Thank you so much for sharing your knowlege, family and wisdom with us. God bless.

All really excellent points. I would guess (and have read) that food picked and frozen or otherwise preserved on the same day is actually higher in nutrients than produce from the grocery store in winter. Another option is to look for local farmers who have greenhouses where you can source some of your food. (When not doing the pantry challenge of course). Also, you know what is on your food...so much of the produce in the grocery store is laden with chemicals and pesticides. The other thing that people need to think about is their animal protein source. You are using far superior animal protein in your own home-raised animals - or in the case of your pig, locally farm-raised animal. Aside from the horrors of factory farming and the terrible suffering the animals endure, they are not fed well and are often pumped with hormones and antibiotics and pesticide-laden foods, not to mention the stress hormones of having endured life and slaughter on a factory farm, which humans ingest as well....in addition to the environmental effects of factory farming. And then the fact that all your food is from scratch. I would say your family's nutrition is far superior than most.

I do miss strawberries and blueberries during the winter, but they are so expensive. I eat a lot of them during the summer. My mom makes the best applesauce and cans it that I eat during the winter time along with canned pears, and peaches. I bought a pressure canner to do my own canning this summer and I’m excited to try it. Previously I have just froze everything, but my freezer is quickly running out of space.

we leave our sprouts in the dark the first few days until the little leaves grow then we put it in light. Keeping them in the dark to avoid bad bacteria or whatnot. Also I just use my regular cooking lentils to make sprouts

Meanwhile the people giving you grief about “fresh” food are commenting on this while they sit in a drive-through 🤣

I was raised eating more seasonal foods & homemade fresh ground wheat for bread etc. This is what we try to do here in Whitehorse Yukon. It is impossible to get "fresh" produce here in the winter. Frozen is definitely more nutritious. I also make my own greens powder through the summer to use through the winter. It adds a nutritional boost & we even mix it with water in the morning

I’m from Ohio and this is so true, I lived 3 miles from Lake Erie and you can’t grow anything. I agree 100% with this.

I so agree ! When you go to supermarkets and see apples in the winter or spring, then they have been stored for months. Consumers have really mostly lost the reflex to think "How strange - tomatoes in january" because so few people, proportionally, garden.

In Alaska none of our produce is "fresh" except in summer!

I've been eating my homegrown spaghetti squash (I froze ) with my homegrown canned pasts sauce this week. Haven't shopped since Dec 21 and we are doing fine.
