  • Even though I'm a logician, logic still makes me feel stupid. Often I get down about my abilities & limitations, and that can make working in academia really difficult. In this video, I wanted to share with you some of the strategies I use when things get tough.
    00:00 - Intro
    00:57 - Research in Logic
02:22 - What resesrch is actually like
    03:03 - Modal logic example
04:18 - The Problem of Research
    04:41 - How I Start Research
    07:00 - Set Reasonable Goals
08:25 - Break a problem down into smaller problems
08:47 - Work on whatever you’re most excited about
    09:25 - Embrace failures!
    09:59 - Collaborate!
    10:38 - Why I’m sharing this
    11:11 - Wrap-up

Thank you for making this video! As someone who's writing a masters' dissertation where a bit of logic is necessary, I think watching this video felt a bit like what you described you felt reading that quote from Andrew Wiles.

Please do a history on the independence of the continuum hypothesis from ZFC axioms from the discoveries or creations of Kurt Godel and Paul Cohen and later with W. Hugh Woodin.

The illusion of the final written paper
as being the model for how research is carried out
    is a real problem.
I read I think it was Derrida who pointed out that
the preface is usually the last thing written in a book.
I would add it is often read by "Captain Hindsight" too.
I was interested that research is a creative process
so researchers can learn from creative artists of various sorts
One of the things I do is keep a notebook and review the jottings
I am not doing research but it helps me to see what I have learnt or discovered.

My feeling about mathematics / logic
      can often be summed up
by a saying which feels very Daoist
"Mathematics is so hard because it is so simple"

I don’t know why the view count is so low, maybe for humanity& philosophy the thumbnail style is too exaggerated, causes attention loses?
