    The late Charita Bauer was one of daytime great legends!Burt was one of my all time favorite GL characters !

    The soaps were able to do things sooner than primetime shows because it was assumed only women watched soaps, at night, the whole family watched. "Pregnant" in 1952 at night was more shocking than it was on daytime in 1960. The soap operas were built around torrid affairs and out of wedlock pregnancies. Oh the drama, the wonderful organ music. That eerie organ music got my attention when I was a kid. Even when I didn't understand something, I knew it was BIG because of the organ music. Thanks

    Look at this! So simple, so beautiful, so human! If GL has preserved an iota of this "old-fashioned" integrity,it would never have degenerated the way it had!

    Your comment is just perfect and is a testiment to what's wrong with all daytime drama today. It's so sad to me, because the producers of these shows just can't/refuse to see it.

    The coldness of Bert at this time is still startling. One of the reasons she mellowed later is because she realized the havoc she wreaked on Mike's life with this behavior.

    Personally speaking with evrerything that had happened, not to mention Mike and Ed's "Complicated" Relationship with their Father due to his Drinking Bert manifested alot of that anger towards anyone she could but as the years went on, she realized that she had to mend her ways or else.

    @TimothySEnglish I know what you mean. You know what would have been cool. If GL survived until 2012, I would have loved for them to do a Roots Style Storyline where many of the characters go back and look at the people who came before them. Or better yet, have Leah Bauer, Papa Bauer's Great Great Granddaughter look through old papers and files and pictures and look at her Family's History in Springfield.

    1963 was such a year. The Girl Group phenomenon was at it's peak, The Motortown Revue went on tour and Florence Ballard of The No Hit Supremes met Cindy Birdsong of The Bluebelles, in 1967 Cindy takes Florence Ballard's place. Dr. King gives his I have a dream speech, camelot was still at it's peak, and one month before a Group from England called the Beatles had one of their first songs "She Loves You" being played on American Bandstand.

    @Sheri451 No, what happened was that Mike Bauer married Juilie Conrad on The Rebound because his marriage to a young lady named Robin ended. Mike "Had" to Marry her because he was told to do the right thing. In the beginning Bert didn't want this Grandchild, but she grew to love her who was Hope, Alan Michael Spaulding's Mother whose Grandmother Julie may have had PPD.

    These classic b/w episodes are great: Bert, Meta, Papa Bauer... the original core characters of GL when it moved from radio to TV. Imagine, this episode aired two months before the assassination of President Kennedy! It is truly a historic piece of pop Americana.

    "Julie's gone into involuntary labor"....I thought that was a state of servitude. It sounds strange to use this term to describe an early labor. I remember these shows as a kid and as someone pointed out, back then they could say things on the soaps that you could not discuss on night time television. Now, they're not very popular because you can see that stuff 24/7 . I think reality shows have taken their place. It is fun to look back at these.

    Yes, Mike was Hope's Father and she was his only child. Bert was using Julie's Pregnancy because deep in her Heart she had alot of anger and guilt. Before Mike was with Julie, he was enaged to a woman named Robin who was the Daughter of Kathy Roberts who was The Stepdaughter Of Meta Roberts. Kathy passed off Robin as her Husband's Dr. Dick Grant Jr., but she was the result of a nasty Affair.she had in New York City. The truth came out, and it was a nasty Scandal.

      At the time I had hoped Michael and Robin would be together forever. But now looking back the actor portraying Michael was out of his league with Nancy Malone. She put something into that character that resonated for the rest of her career.

    • @laminage
      @laminage 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A bit before my time. Wouldn't it have been something if it were discovered that Dr. Dick Grant's ancestors "owned" Dr. Charles Grant and his Family which consisted of Son David, Wife Vivian and Daughter Gilly.

    To add fuel to the fire was that as Teenagers Mike and Robin fell in love with one another,, Robin later dated a man named Carl who was Mike's Best Friend, when Carl found out, a fight ensued and then Carl died, Mike went on Trial, was acquitted and although he and Robin wanted to be together, they knew they had to deal with the "Past". Robin would marry and divorce an Older Man. Things got tough at The Bauers because Bill a PR Man was losing Business and he had to take a cut in pay.

      katie9918 Bert was horrible. Bill was a much more sympathetic character. All that changed after Bill supposedly died in 1969. Bert really mellowed and became sweeter throughout the 70s. Especially after Papa died in 1973 and Bert became the matriarch of the Bauer family. She went from being a domineering, controlling, nagging wife and mother to a sweet grandma.

      By this time (1962?) Shows of any kind were getting to use and say more adult things. Just 2 years later Pat Mathews on AW had an abortion-the 1srlt on television. Agnes Nixon tries to say one of her shows was the 1st but it was AW.

      If you can check out 50 Years of Soaps where Jess Walton and John Callahan talk about the Legacy of Soaps. A lot happened in 1952. Guiding Light debuted on TV on June 30th which was Four Years After Ed Sullivan and his Toast Of The Town Debuted. Florence Ballard Of The Supremes had turned Nine and in 1983 an up and coming Pop Star named Cheryl Ann Tweedy was born in The UK. The Price of Salt was published which of course became the Hit Movie Carol (2015). In Boston a Music Student named Coretta Scott went on a Blind Date with a Young Minister named Martin Luther King and in Philadelphia, A Dance Show called Bob Horn's Bandstand debut which became "American Bandstand". In the 1990's Ed Bauer told his Girlfriend Dr. Eve Guthrie he had dreams of Dancing On The Bandstand.
