On our way to the Mediterranean! [Ep. 3]

  • After four years in the boatyard following her tragic accident, Magic Carpet sets sail once again! Now that she can float, we transported her to Basel, Switzerland, where we will start the long canal journey through France out to the Mediterranean.
    I didn't have as much time to make this episode, because we're still frantically doing last minute preparations for the canal journey. However, I hope it's still enjoyable -- the spectacular sight of a Vindo 32 under sail is usually enough to capture a boat lover's attention!

    Thoughtful to have the previous owner there for the launch. It is almost like Magic Carpet broke the trailer on purpose when she saw the crane! I’m glad you were able to persevere to get her safely in the water.

    I've been watching a few of your latest videos so I had to go back and start from the beginning to get the history of the boat. Aladino has done an amazing job on the Vindo 32. Such beautiful lines and a very worthy cause to restore. I know that Maya came in towards the end of the project and she compliments Magic Carpet and Aladino marvelously and of course she is so much more than a pretty face because with out her, we wouldn't have had these wonderful videos documenting the entire endeavor. It's great to see the younger generation working so hard to realize their dreams. Like you, I am an avid fan of Delos, La Vagabonde and others. And now I can ad SMC to that list. I am inspired! Well done, keep up the good work!

    The old owners must be thrilled knowing she lives to sail again. Our vessels have their own identity and soul. The loss of a vessel is actually heartbreaking. It's like losing a member of the family. Bravo for keeping her alive!!!

    Loving your channel. Binge watching! You’re a remarkable communicator. How special that the previous owner rocked up. An important emotional connection to the boat’s former life. Please could you tell us why you’ve registered Magic Carpet in The Netherlands? Go well ... 👍🥇

    • @SailingMagicCarpet
      @SailingMagicCarpet  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roy Clare Thank you so so much. We may even do a separate FAQ video on the flag thing... everyone is so curious! It's basically a flag of convenience. The Netherlands has very little bureaucracy and it is a simple, cheap, and straightforward flag to register. The Swiss flag is infinitely more complicated, and the Canadian flag has some restrictions for long term cruising around Europe. Plus, i liked it better than other flags of convenience, like cayman islands or panama. My family is all Dutch on my Dad's side and I still have a lot of relatives in Amsterdam who I visit, so there's a connection there.

    What a love story!
    Especially hitting her (trailer) with a 2x4!
    So would Magic Carpet be considered a "shallow keel" boat, or what? I know not, but the keel looks hefty but not really deep, to me. BTW, my childhood biases, I personally "like" a full keel as opposed to a "fin keel". Heck, I think I would add an additional centerboard [breakaway], or dagger board, option just to experiment with pointing up wind.
    I am running through your videos a second time. I THOUGHT I had liked every one I watched but apparently not.
    I subscribe (once) and like each one in case that offers you any benefit.

      I do not know answer for sure, but if you are referring to all the flags hoisted on the stay, they answered this at 6:31, where they hoisted all their decorative flags to commemorate the occasion. This is known as Full-dress or Flying Holiday Colors ... however it is supposed to only be signal flags and not country ones. But many are not aware of this, technically flying any nation flag above another represents being conquered, again these days a lot are unaware of the old technical signalman codes, and even that varied around the world. Or many do not have enough signal flags and so substitute what all ones they do have (considering only had it on the forestay this is likely the case).
      Also boats generally hoist flag for nation they are registered in. So it is possible even though he is from Switzerland, that the boat was actually registered in Netherlands and then that flag is hoisted typically at the stern of the ship. Or also courtesy flags are hoisted for which ever country you are in as well, as sign of respect and to signify that you have passed customs and are abiding by that countries laws.

I've watched a lot of Vlogs on sailing and most are a bit smug (can I say that?) yes they are.. a bit too self congratulating (ok why not). Anyway yours is not as you are just 'you' are great story tellers without trying to be someone else. They are very informative too. I started watching the last third but am hooked enough to start at the beginning. I look forward to the journeys ahead and will be doing the same journey very soon (from UK.south). You are doing a great job entertaining us - so go on be a little smug yourselves .. you've earned it! Thanks.
