Let me explain the money thing. There was a time where 1 USD was equal to 5 Gourdes. That's why we divide the Gourdes (which is the haitian currency) by 5 to know how much dollars it is. But since 1 USD is no longer 5 Gourdes, we say haitian dollar. But there is no such thing as haitian dollar, it's just a calculation that we do in our head because it's easier for us I guess.

African Tigress, I wasn’t too sure about your visit to Haiti, but I must now say thank you for this. As usual, your account is informative, interesting , unbiased and objective. It gives those of us who are armchair travellers a perspective not based on hysteria and general western subjectivity.
Haiti has been decimated, exploited and abused, not only by powers in the west, but by their own corrupt leaders. But, still the spirit of resilience is evident in the people. Once again thank you, looking forward to what the rest of your journey unfolds.
Wish you could do Cuba or Dominica , both places of great interest.

Before the Haitian economy got bad, 5 Haitian gourde used to equal $1 US dollar- (It was the strongest currency in the region) Also, there used to be a lot of tourists from the US, so Haitian started to refer to 5 gourdes as a dollar. The gourde has lost its value, so now the meaning of the a dollar no longer applies to the US dollar but they still use the expression.

Big up to haiti "the real face of the caribbean" without haiti fight for freedom and independence and becoming the force in the caribbean and the america's during slavery. What we are seeing and witnessing is a political fight against haiti by the european colonial offsprings. They never forgived hayiti🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹 Hayiti Must Stand Up And Rise Again 💚💛❤

You all need to stop it. What we are seeing is Haitians fighting Haitians in Haiti… with Haitian gangs wanting control of the government. It’s time to start living in the present and take some responsibility for what is going on with your people. Only you all can save yourselves… that is the only way you will be able to move forward. The world is rooting for Haiti’s success, but Haitians need to start living in the present and start holding other Haitians accountable.

I visited Port-Au-Prince & one of the closest Beach resorts near Port-Au-Prince & then celebrated the New Year at a concert 🎵 🎶 🎵 with my oldest niece about 8 years ago when Martelly was still president…. One of my sisters has gone to Haiti 🇭🇹 about 8 times as she voluntarily taught at one of her Medical Surgeon’s friends’ own Medical college at Cap Haïtien…. A close Haitian sister/friend of mine here in New York City, moreover had her mother & sister who lived in Port-Au-Prince then, take us out for dinner to a restaurant with an amazing view overlooking Port-Au-Prince…! The Haitian People 🇭🇹 are amongst the entire African Diaspora People, who have been led to Extreme sufferance & survivalship… And yet for most in Haiti 🇭🇹, the Endurance, Faith & Survivorship of The Most Oppressive& Underprivileged is Just Extraordinary….!!!!!!!! I WILL one day return to visit La Citadelle & pay Homage & Honour to The Brave Soldiers & Civilians who sacrificed themselves to become the First Ever Freed Slaves & Nation….!!!!

It seems to me that even with traffic, you would have gotten to the airport at the same time. Driving through that flooded, muddy road had my heart beating fast. I kept wondering if he was in a high SUV, or would you get stuck in that muddy water. Anyway, thank God, you made it. Your airport adventure reminded me of a similar experience I had in Trinidad. At the time, the airline flying from Port of Spain to Tobago was TTAS. We arrived at the airport at 7 am for a 9 am flight. There was one delay after another. We finally left POS at 5:30 PM!!! We were beyond exhausted by the time we got to Tobago. We later learned that the Trinis said TTAS was an acronym for Take Ticket And Suffer! LOL

@AFRICAN TIGRESS “dola” is an unrecognized slang term (only the locals know) to describe that many, many, moons ago, five gourdes = one US dollar: the formula is Gourdes divided by five is the amount in dola (not dollar); the exchange rate is currently at 134 gourdes and 88 centimes (G134.88) to one US dollar ($1.00 USD); the currency is still called Gourdes. I hope this helps.

@African Tigress so your translater should have said, “Kabrit en sòs” stewed goat meat”, “banane bouyi” - boiled plantain, normally service with rice and bean sauce “diri aka sòs pwa. While you’re in Okay, try some TomTom ak Kalalou (TomTom resembles pounded yam but it’s pounded breadfruit) with meat and crabs in sauce. It’s Okay’s signature dish. Enjoy yourself, hopefully you will be taken to Gelee Beach. As your walking, you’re going to come across a house with a gate made with plastic bottles. You’re going to think “like wow” you will feel at home. You’re accustomed to the fresh seafood and meat. One more thing, griot is fried pork shoulder, so if you’re not into pork, let it be known now!

There is no such thing as haitian dollar. The exchange rate with US $ used to be a fixed 1 to 5. Eventually, it varies. They still have a dollar that is 5 gourdes to a dollar. Except the US $ is no longer 1 to 5. So, they call it haitian dollar.
