As a BMW fan, I totally agree with Scotty on this one. These old naturally aspirated straight-6 BMWs were far better in almost every sense than the vast majority of new ones, particularly in terms of reliability. And even when something breaks down, the cost of repair is still relatively cheap due to simpler engineering.

Ive had 9 of these now, from a 318i, 323is, 325is, 328i, and a 95 dakar yellow m3 coupe which I daily drive right now and love. These inline 6's are BULLETPROOF, affordable, easy to maintain and modify, and parts can be found everywhere in junkyards and damn near everything is interchangeable. Transmissions are solid as hell too, everyone says the obd1 325 getrag transmissions suck but ive never had issues with any, and the 96+ZF transmissions are strong asf and in a bunch of other BMW's. Diff is bulletproof minus the front bolt that always breaks (once you start to really race and beat these cars) but honestly its the best bang for your buck fun all around platform. But prices are starting to go up because everyone is just realizing now how good they are lol.

The only thing that broke was the clutch that I bought on eBay lmao. Put the stock used clutch on there and have been driving the car ever since. Has a tune and custom exhaust. Super fun to drive. I ended up buying a sedan last year and manual swapped it as well. I daily drive my coupe so we'll see how long it lasts taking some abuse.

some of us are just like Scotty, why ? Im his age and learned how to repair all my own cars since 16 yrs old. So up till today I can rebuild my own motor, and Im a painting contractor. This comes over not wanting to tow a car to a repair shop that see’s you as a sap needing them for any price they quote you caus your stuck with them. Taking risks in life diving into your own repairs gives a sense of pride and immense confidence in your abilities.
Take the risk of doing major repairs at home ( love youtube videos and those who share their expertise). My first rebuild of my 1985 Honda CRX
motor was without help. It was the high fuel model and worth keeping. We are like Scotty because connecting with your car on this level allows you to self diagnose problems on the spot, even while traveling . Why wouldnt you want to know about your cars mechanical workings.
Repair shops hate people like me, they detect Im asking questions they would rather not answer so they can inflate the quote.
I know too much now, so I end up doing repairs to my own vehicle that most shops dont do anyway. Most shops do simple repairs, they arent into rebuilding motors. Start with a vehicle that is a second car you buy just to experiment on while you have a backup car.
Learn something. Some of this stuff isnt that difficult, it just takes guts to try. My last repair was my 2000 Ford E250 intake manifold and gasket.
It looked daunting to see all the stuff that needed to be removed before you get the manifold off. I did watch a video, but it was hard to see the steps he took to remove his manifold. Reason I did this work, the van isnt worth that much to pay 1,000 for a shop to do it, just as you do more and more of these repairs, your vehicle becomes reliable more and more that you do it yourself. Any other van might have too many problems on the horizon you cant forsee. After 10 yrs of ownership and my own buildup of repairs, Im confident so much more in this vans longevity.
So when you think Scotty is cheap, that has nothing to do with it. New cars are expensive to buy, Id rather see less mechanically inclined people to lease less expensive cars and upgrade them every 3 years. You can lease for 185.00 per month a car like a VW Jetta, never pay for repairs and drive a new car so often.

Since kid I pursue disassembling everything I can trying to repair whatever it is (but lacking enough knowledge).
I should say only about 30% ends up in the same shape it was before. The rest either breaks or is left incomplete and occupying space for years to come...
