    Before the accusation, Fernanda Torres had recorded a video full of love, asking Brazilians to send love to Karla who was suffering from a lot of hate. Several Brazilians went there and sent her affectionate messages... Karla never lived up to that, on the contrary.

      @@alexacosta3655 I think it’s too late to cancel the Oscars. I understand you don’t like Emilia Perez. But just think about the crew members who will produce the show this year. Since the show will pay tribute to those who lost homes and lives in the LA wildfires, what if some of those crew people have lost their homes to the fires too? They have to do this to provide for their own needs and their families if they have any.

      They're moving the film down on projections, possibly to the number 10 spot because no one wants anything to do with this toxic and incredibly polarizing and defensive piece of propaganda garbage. Oscar ballots might even go as far as to to remove it from projections. They could potentially revoke Gascon's nomination and Jacques Audiard will lose all credibility.

    About Anora: She sets a precedent for other actors who might feel pressured to say they don’t need an intimacy coordinator. How can we know if someone truly didn’t want one or if they felt pressured not to ask? The way she frames it also risks making those who do request an intimacy coordinator seem like they don’t trust their colleagues. If having an intimacy coordinator is considered best practice in film production, then one should always be present on set, regardless of whether the actors feel they need it or not. People don’t know in advance what could happen. Feeling comfortable in the moment doesn’t mean you’re not taking a risk. It’s like choosing not to wear a seatbelt just because you think nothing will happen, but you never know!
    Edit: Just adding another perspective, when you choose not to hire an intimacy coordinator, you're also taking away an opportunity from someone in a highly specialized and niche profession. If productions suddenly stop hiring them altogether, how are these professionals supposed to sustain themselves?

    • @rafagb
      @rafagb วันที่ผ่านมา +9

      Thank you for this - I really like Anora and Mikey Madison, and I don’t understand why people are having a hard time understanding that this is not an attack on the movie, it’s just a moment for us to understand that the position should become standard practice, and not something that an actor gets to “choose” (and that can later be abused by directors, who would “choose” to only hire actors that don’t mind not having intimacy coordinators.)

    • @VTTVpsycho
      @VTTVpsycho วันที่ผ่านมา +9

      @@greaterlordkusanali Exactly! Harassment and assault is not new to Hollywood. Having an intimacy coordinator doesn’t guarantee that those things won’t happen, but it provides an extra layer of protection. I think it’s really unprofessional not to have one present on a film where explicit scenes are being shot.

      For this, I definitely disagree with Austin. Besides nudity/sexual scenes in movies, this could be about actors “encouraged” or pressured/forced to doing their stunts or gun play like the Alec Baldwin Rust movie disaster, where people felt unsafe but “pressured” to continue.
      People like Tom Cruise are big enough to do what they want, but there are many smaller and lowery actors forced to compromise because saying no is a career killer. It is not as black and white issue as Austin thinks.

    The Anora controversy was kinda annoying on both ends for me. People were going too far acting like this specific scenario was a huge issue, some actually implying abuse took place with no basis, but other people were shutting down a larger important discussion that I think is very valid just because they could only see the points being made as hate towards this specific movie. As an actor I absolutely think at least having an intimacy coordinator on set that can step in at any moment should be a mandatory safety measure. I dont think a specific situation needs to be an issue to spark a more important conversation, and I think people on both ends stopped anything productive from coming out of it.

It was the film that was the most popular musical of the Year, the best musical adaptation since Chicago and also one of the finest examples of genre filmmaking not using AI and instead using all practical sets and practical choreography. Wicked has positive messages about racism, fascism and political misinformation and distrust between parties that resonates so completely and fully with today, considering that it came out right off the heels of the election, which boosted its awards potential. After receiving 10 Oscar nominations, Wicked grossed 730 million on a 143 million budget and broke even gracefully. It blew everyone's expectations out of the water and made everyone love it. Even those that hate musicals are cheering this film on. It's also the best option at this point because there's no difficult things that wouldn't sit well with anyone in here. It appeals to the artistic sensibilities of The Academy by stretching act 1 into a complete narrative with a crescendo conclusion that could pass for a stand alone film that ends the way a film like that should. The performances are getting more attention now due to the PR nightmare of EP. Cynthia is still in the high points to win but Grande winning is stronger now. Grande winning combined with tech wins like Costumes, production design, visual effects, editing, sound, make-up and score. Chicago won with just techs and supporting actress. Wicked can do that and shock everyone by simply being the safe preferential ballot number one that didn't upset, offend or make anyone angry. For one, it did the opposite. Elphaba as a character was easy to relate to because it's about judgement by color. That racial metaphor was always ingrained in the story but it's made more narratively and thematically compelling while being accessible to all demographics. The music is also engrained in the academy voters minds because many of them probably grew up with the stage musical and know the Wizard of Oz as a beloved piece of cinematic achievement that is still cherished to this day. It has a stronger chance now and it's so thematically rich yet accessible, funny and dramatic all at the same time, making it the complete package for all voters. It has it, this film has everything they want and more. It's now top 5 at least.

    Man as a Mexican I felt really sad with the Emilia Pérez situation, we´re supposed to be living in an era where any wrong doings are supposed to be heard and recognized, but with this movie Hollywood didn´t seem to react to the backlash and even made all those nominations. It seems to me that paying respect to wrong doings is only available when it makes them money. Karla Sofía has been in many Spanish and Mexican reality shows, and she more often than not played the villain in those shows. She was the Omarosa/Simon Cowell/Piers Morgan type of personality in those shows, so it makes sense that her public persona matched her character in those shows. Actually Throughout her life, even before her transition when she was a man, he mainly played the villain in almost every movie and TV show. However those who know her personally have always said that she is a very sweet and nice person. So I guess, she could have explained that those tweets were part of her character in those shows. But I assume every one at Netflix is panicking now.

    The geopolitical context currently surrounding the relationship between Mexico and the United States offers much for Mexicans to consider regarding this film and its potential political agenda. One thing that the allied nations of France and the United States share is a history of neocolonialist and imperialist tendencies, underpinned by Eurocentric ideas rooted in white supremacist ideologies. These ideologies place the West as superior to the Global South, maintaining a paternalistic vision and dominance over the latter. This mindset is reflected in the creation of this film, which is one of the reasons many Mexicans are upset.
    For example, the film addresses a serious issue in a biased manner, failing to acknowledge that the problem isn't solely Mexico’s; it's also the responsibility of other countries. A critical detail, such as the fact that over 70% of the weapons fueling violence in Mexico originate from the United States, is glaringly omitted. Mexico’s image has been tarnished by the media for decades, particularly by Hollywood, which has perpetuated an anti-Mexican narrative and contributed to a negative portrayal of the country and its people. Many Hollywood films, for instance, have used sepia-yellow filters to make Mexico appear backward, dirty, inferior, and underdeveloped. Nearly all films focusing on Mexico dwell on its negative aspects, and this movie is no different.
    The lack of nuance in its portrayal of Mexico contributes to an anti-Mexican discourse driven by a Eurocentric, white supremacist perspective. It's troubling that in a world where white Western countries dominate, these very nations are the ones applauding and awarding this film, further perpetuating the negative stereotypes of Mexico.
    This movie is deeply offensive and insulting to Mexico. This criticism stems from various aspects, including the selection and casting choices. In an interview, the casting director was asked why, if the movie is set in Mexico and revolves around the country, there was no Mexican cast. She responded by saying they traveled to Mexico but couldn't find any talented actors for the film. Considering that Mexico has millions of residents, claiming they couldn't find suitable actors is not only highly discriminatory but also more troubling when you think about the fact that the film profits from portraying the pain and suffering of Mexico.

    The worst part is thinking that this might harm Fernanda Torres' campaign and Ainda Estou Aqui (I’m Still Here), even though she has done absolutely nothing wrong. She has been focused on promoting her own film and even recorded a video praising Karla Sofia Gascón, asking Brazilians not to direct hate toward her-hate that, by the way, Gascón didn’t just receive from Brazilians but from all of Latin America and the world, as many people disliked the film. Emilia Perez is truly a bad movie, full of stereotypes, terrible songs, and even worse lyrics. The only thing that saves it is Zoe Saldaña.
    To me, 13 nominations show that the Academy cares more about the millions of dollars behind Emilia Perez ’s campaign than actually rewarding the truly great audiovisual art that exists around the world.

      I believe it will hurt her chances in my opinion. As much as I love Zoe Saldana, I strongly believe that Ariana Grande gave the better performance and is very deserving of the win. Zoe did ok in the film. It's not my favorite performance of hers and do not believe it's an Oscar worthy performance, respectfully for those who are predicting Zoe to win. This movie from the very beginning was a very divisive and racist film given how the director chose to portray the Hispanic/Mexican culture and depict the LGBTQ community and just his ignorance in general on how when he was being asked about what research he had to do with the film to where he couldn't come up with an answer about the culture; I am sorry that but that just shows his ignorance and empathy to the marginalized groups he is telling the story of. This is like giving Joker 2 13 Oscar nominations when the movie bombed at the box office and giving Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga nominations when their acting was not good. This movie doesn't deserve any wins.
