- 80 years ago, in 1939, one of Hollywood’s most beloved classic films was produced: The Wizard of Oz. To mark this anniversary, we’re setting out along the Yellow Brick Road to remember and visit the final resting places of the talented artists who made that film the enduring emerald gem that it is today. Join us as we hitch a ride on a tornado, to the Land of OZ.

With respect to Clara Blandick, who played/was Auntie Em. "Throughout the 1950s, Blandick's health steadily began to deteriorate. Her eyesight began to fail and she was suffering from severe, painful arthritis. On April 15, 1962, she returned home from Palm Sunday services at her church. She began rearranging her room, placing her favorite photos and memorabilia in prominent places. She laid out her resume and a collection of press clippings from her lengthy career. She dressed immaculately in an elegant royal blue dressing gown, and with her hair properly styled, she took an overdose of sleeping pills. She lay down on a couch, covered herself with a gold blanket over her shoulders, and tied a plastic bag over her head. She left the following note: “I am now about to make the great adventure. I cannot endure this agonizing pain any longer. It is all over my body. Neither can I face the impending blindness. I pray the Lord my soul to take. Amen.”
He was one of THE most important people on the film. As a Makeup Artist myself, I have always cited that film as having more foamed latex prosthetics than any other film up until "Planet of The Apes" in the 60's. It was also one of the first films to use foamed latex appliances to change the faces of actors.

It’s harrowing to realize that even though Judy was one of the youngest in the cast, she was outlived by practically everyone
People at the studio had her blood on her hands. You probably know that they forced her to take diet pills. She was also forced to smoke cigarettes to "keep her weight" and had to take sleeping pills to fall asleep because the diet pills would keep her awake. All this as a growing teenager. The fact that she survived to 47 is a miracle under those conditions.

I worked at CBS and every year when we broadcast The Wizard of Oz everyone in the broadcast center would be walking the halls humming and singing the songs! It was an amazing experience!
My father, Bud Sewall, was a staff announcer at CBS Television City back when CBS would air this movie every holiday season in and around the 1960’s. They hired a different celebrity each time to “host” the presentation but it was always my father’s voice announcing: “The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, and Jack Haley, brought to you by ......”. I’ve even remembered his lines because I got to be there and hear him repeat the same ones each year! The entire production process of this special event was fascinating! Each is year they reshot the opening sequence as a “lead in” with new special effects. My father, as I mentioned, had the privilege of announcing the presentation. Rather than simply airing the Wizard of Oz movie it was packaged as a show within a show with a celebrity such as Dick Van Dyke, “hosting” the event. Every year CBS would pull out all the stops and shoot special effects to lead into the actual movie. For example, I can recall they constructed a miniature Emerald City that appeared inside a flower that blossomed open. Another year they built a small mockup of Emerald City inside a plastic “bubble” about 15” across. They had two video cameras setup on stage with one of them shooting nothing more than colorfully lit bubbles floating around from a bubble machine and the other imaging the “bubble encased” Emerald City. Then the director combined both images superimposed to magically create the effect of the Emerald City, in it’s own “bubble” and appear to float in from far away and meander around a bit until it reached the secondary camera to effectively fill the frame. This took a bit of creative camera panning combined with dollying and zooming simultaneously to pull off the idea that the Emerald City just floated in from afar. It was an incredible effect and I was so fascinated by the television process. Anyway, the main reason I brought this up was in response to JoeBezz’ comments about the yearly ritual of CBS’ rebroadcasting this incredible movie. My father, Bud Sewall, was always the announcer for CBS’s yearly holiday presentation. As a family we got to visit behind the scenes in all the various television departments during the taping of the show yearly. Yes, THIS WAS MY MAGICAL EXPERIENCE each year in my adolescence at holiday times. I am now 71 years of age and it seems like yesterday. To this day I still get choked up and teary eyed each time I watch this movie. In hmy humble opinion, this goes down as the greatest Hollywood movie of all time with it’s ageless, and timeless message, “There’s no place like home”.

You are a bit older then me, l'm turning 60 soon, so our paths probably never crossed! I’m glad you have such fond memories of CBS! I know some older retired co workers and will mention your father to them! I’m sure someone remembers him!

We lived for The Wizard of Oz coming on annually... So magical.
I love it! I remember it so well! I 1st saw it innthe 80's when inwas very young..maybe 4 or 5 and the flying monkeys scared me! What an amazing film! That could be looped forever on my big screen!
I remember those days! I was born in 1981, so I am old enough to remember it being a “big thing” for a movie being on TV.
Always looked forward to every year of Wizard of Oz, the original 3 Star Wars, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and only one that I think they still show, The Ten Commandments.
That and "A Charley Brown Christmas" were great annual events that everyone and their family's watched!
One thing I noticed, with a few exceptions, most of the cast lived well into their eighties and nineties. That’s a long time for that era.

Was at my uncle's house with a slew of relatives. He was the first with a color tv. The adults didn't seem to make much of it, but all of us kids were amazed at transformation from sepia to color! It was amazing to us!
It was always in color. Half in color/sepia
I told my kids and grandkids the story of our first color TV and this movie. They just roll their eyes and say "ok pop pop" because they've always watched TV in color and have no concept of black and white TV.
When I was a kid, The Wizard of Oz was on one time a year. No one missed it.
I remember that. No VCR's back then. You either watched it or missed until the next year.
Remember that very well. Only 13 channels in the "dark ages" and the showing of The Wizard of Oz was a big deal. 😚 to those good days.

I believe we can thank Ted Turner for that move. On Saturday mornings during the 70s a viewer could flip on local TV (bc that's all anyone had) and watch some of the best vintage movies, like The Picture of Dorian Grey".
This was one of the most respectful Wizard of Oz tributes. I enjoyed it very much.
But its sad, esp the fact that some of them died that young.
I knew that Margaret Hamilton's ashes had been scattered, but you'd think that there'd at least be some monument or memorial plaque for her somewhere in Hollywood, or anywhere in California, or even in Cleveland, OH, her birthplace. I hope it'll be considered.

When I was about eight years old (1957) my mom got me into the car and drove me to the movie theater. She did not tell me what I was going to see. She gave me money for a ticket (things were a lot safer back then) and drove away. She did not discuss what I was about to see. I had no clue. I remember watching the black and white beginning. It bored me. Then the house came tumbling down. I was stunned! I was in awe! My mom picked me up after the film ended. She knew what she was doing. Thanks Mom!

Mother was 15 when she saw the movie. She said the audience did a collective gasp when Dorothy opens the door into Oz. The film makes me cry due to sentimentality. This video brought out tears as well. I’m 62 and still love the film.

My beloved mama was 16 when she saw this in 1939 and she said the same thing about the audience gasping when Dorothy opened the door to Oz because of the technicolor… To this day it remains my favorite movie of all time! “There’s no place like home“ 😢💕

As a little kid (when east and west germany were on the brink to become one again) i saw this glorious movie for the first time on TV. And i too gasped as it took me by surprise that suddenly the black and white changed to colour and the film lets you take a breath for a moment and just sit in awe as your eyes and soul get hugged by the warmth of the land of Oz. Today i too cannot watch the film without tears in my eyes because there is so much about this film that touches me in a way i cannot describe. Mostly i think of all the generations that have enjoyed this film since it's original release, with some of them still around with us. Bless them. ♡
Heard the same thing from my Mom - she said everybody gasped when it switched to color. I kind of felt that way when I saw Toy Story for the first time - cartoon, but yet so detailed.
The story of an orphan living on a farm with an uncle and aunt. Swept up in a battle with an evil character with magical powers and a powerful army. At first the young orphan was at a loss against the overwelming odds, but eventually elevated to the point of winning a victory. Part of the journey has the hero orphan teaming up with a metal man and furry creature outcasts.
I am of course talking about Star Wars.
It almost describes the plot of Jim Henson’s “Labyrinth”, too. 🤣😂

Yes, in fact The Wizard Of Oz is an Archetype of a heroic fantasy story.
An innocent orphan is kicked in a big adventure, meets a few friends, faces the ultimate villain and his army, magic, good fairy, a wise and good Head Wizard, visits mysterious citys and areas and finally wins.
This film...made my childhood. My uncle was an enthusiast and had (or still has) a study full of memorabilia from the film, merch, etc. He even gave me a VHS copy of the 75th anniversary edition of the film. My mom made a Dorothy costume for me at age 4, complete with Ruby Slippers, which I wore to tatters. A few years ago I was able to see it in theaters for the first time with my ex (in 3D. no less). That was really something special. My 8th grade social studies class also covered the political allegory of the novel, then we watched the film...I sang quietly in the back, to everyone's chagrin. I've watched this film probably a million times since I was 4 and it never gets old! *I even made a drinking game out of it --- rule #1 drink for every "mistake" you see...you'll never not see them!
Listening to Judy Garland sing “somewhere over the rainbow” literally sent chills through me. In fact the entire movie has always had that affect !
I prefered JFK and the hidden wizard of Oz..

The Wizard of Oz is one of my favorite top two movies. I auditioned for a local production of it. I also met the lolipop kid about 15 or 20 years ago and when my friend was out west she met Frank Baum's grandson or great grandson who had written another Wizard of Oz book and brought back an autographed copy for me. In October, 1977 I received the assignment of writing an orchestral version of "Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead" to introduce MARGARET HAMILTON HERSELF--who was appearing with the Cleveland Orchestra for their kiddie's Halloween concerts. I spent 3 days with her--as piano accompanist and coach (she was narrating "Peter and the Wolf"), as well as having dinner and attending a concert of the orchestra with her. You can't imagine the thrill of hearing your own rendition of "Ding-Dong", played by one of the world's greatest orchestras, and seeing Margaret H. herself walk out on stage to thunderous applause.
Margaret was then living in Gramercy Park (NYC), and was one of the kindest, most gentle and courteous people I've ever met. We actually walked down to the local Deli on Halloween night, amidst the hordes of drunk/high students from Western Reserve. I still have a cassette recording of my "Ding Dong" arrangement and my conversation with Margaret-- where she actually asked ME for advice as to her line-readings for Peter and the Wolf. All I got out of the weekend was her signature (I didn't have a camera with me) and some fabulous memories. LR
I always liked Margaret too. I remember her on.numerous television programs and especially on Mister Rogers Neighborhood, and The Partridge Family as Reuben Kincaid's mother.

Seeing the graves of all the less familiar figures, forgotten or never-known by the general public, makes me think of how many of those thousands of graves in the background of these videos might contain the remains of people who did interesting, memorable, remarkable things that we'll never realize. It's wonderful that some of them, as well as the big names, are remembered here.

Agree completely. It's true, some of the lesser actors have nothing but a little Stone on the ground or a metal plate. But if their graves were proportional to how much happiness they brought to many of us, and how much they meant to me as a child, each grave would be a skyscraper.
I live in Pittsburgh, PA and there's an entire section of Allegheny Cemetery dedicated to the Civil War.
It's a huge entire section with a gigantic memorial. The graves are all the same, a small bronze placard on the ground.
It's absolutely overwhelming being there and it's hits you... This was an entire generation of men who seen unspeakable horrors of mankind. I mean sure you've thought that but being there overcame me and hit me emotionally hard.
That some of these men did heroic things that we'll never know as they died before their deed could be reported back.
That we focus so much on celebrities while the true heroes lie en masse in every neighborhood's cemetery.
Its wonderful to think that generations of children grew up, and continue do so, watching this enchanting movie. I'm 50 years old and still cry like a baby when Judy says goodbye to her friends the Lion, the Tinman and the Scarecrow at the end of the movie. The flying monkeys still scare me to this day and the scene when Dorothy opens the door of her home when she lands in Oz and steps into a land full of colour is just magical. It's hard to believe that the film wasnt a hit when it was first released and many early reviews complained that the movie frightened children.

I grew up watching The Wizard of Oz, it’s my #1 favorite movie. I’m 21 years old and I still watch it. Rest In Peace, to all the characters. I loved them all!

@@zyxw2024 I, too am going through a similar life! I am 81...recently lost my dear husband, found him on my kitchen floor dead......the saddest day of my life, we were married 60 years. He helped me throughout the years with my terrible migraine headaches, had them since I was 8 yrs old....and STILL have them....many times they are unbearable!! My husband helped me through them since we were 15-16 yrs old when we met in high school....he was a year older. We were married at 21-22.....and had a wonderful life, I would not change a thing....except for the horrible headaches I suffered with!
I also have Fibromyalgia, Osteoporosis, unbearable neck pain from a whip lash years ago. I have arthritis in my knees.....actually throughout my whole body but it flares up when-ever! I’ve had several broken bones.....they flare up with pain at unusual times like when the atmospheric pressure from storms...my headaches don’t like storms either!!
So...many years ago a wonderful doctor gave me an opioid for my pain....it was wonderful, I finally had control of my painful headaches, which really are hereditary, I’m third generation, my daughter fourth generation, my granddaughter 5th generation....we all suffer!
I also now have to deal with PDSD after finding my husband, it still is just like yesterday!😥
Anyway....I took my pill “when needed” only.....just like I do today.....but my doctor limits me regardless of my pain flareups! Back then it was rare but as I got older, the pain increased with deteriorating health...and the mishaps of broken bones course! But I still managed to raise my two children, hold down employment for 35 years, be caregiver to 8 dear relatives and friends.... but could never have done it without my “opioid pill”...! My wonderful doctor passed away after 40 yrs with him...I was devastated! But finally found another doctor who knew my first doctor...he continued giving me my much needed pills for my headaches! Then he died two years ago....just when the OPIOID EPIDEMIC arose or around there! I was never a pill seeker except for my headaches....then more body pain as I got older. So, I finally did find a doctor who would let me have my “opioid pill” but he limits me with them.....I never was limited....and now what I have to go through to get them is just awful! I am tired of the fight each month to have my prescription renewed, I am very unhappy with my home situation....my kids had to live with me after losing their beautiful home to a crooked contractor (from Chicago) who did a horrific remodel for them! When they moved back in, the house fell apart....!! They lost so much money with lawyers and still lost the fight!! But now they live with me plus my granddaughter who doesn’t work...she is 24 hrs old!! It’s nice to have them but I’d really be happier in my 50 year old home alone!!
Needless to say......I am not a “happy camper” any longer.....so after reading what this wonderful lady did, well I have had the same thoughts! But I can’t help wondering why they didn’t give her medication for her pain.....and regardless whether they are habit forming or not.....who cares when you are OLD whether you are going to be dependent or addicted to them....YOU ARE OLD.....YOU ARE GOING TO DIE SOON ANYWAY!! Why can’t we older people die happy instead of IN PAIN?? I don’t stand on a corner or break into a drugstore for drugs, never have, never will. BUT I JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY THESE DOCTORS DON’T UNDERSTAND SOME OF US OLD PEOPLE NEED PAIN RELIEF!!!!! Oh, I know it’s the FDA and congress who make the rules for saving the young people and young movie actors from drugs (sometimes the old ones too) , I understand that.....but we older people got left behind in the equation!!😡. This wonderful lady could have gone on for longer if only she’d gotten the proper help! When you are old it isn’t easy to “fit in” with life as it is......so just why couldn’t this dear, dear older actress get help from a doctor or her family or a friend....for her pain? God Bless her......❣️🙏🏻

Growing up I watched this movie every year with my grandma. It was one of her favorite movies when she was a kid. Judy and Shirley Temple were her favorite actors.
This is absolutely the last word on "The Wizard of Oz." It is the best documentary I have ever seen on the movie.
It was done with great style and sophistication. The idea of death might seem a depressing concept for any movie or its stars,

"Last word" on Oz? I hope not. This is a fun watch, and fine for non-nerds, but a terrible amount of info. Example...Ms Hamilton, who played the Wicked Witch, was not injured. Her stunt double (yes, she had one--Betty Danko) was injured, not her as the primary actress. Lots of other stuff in here that's not right, but no one probably much cares except us fanatics. Still, it's not "fun" to see/hear shoddy work/research being gushingly praised.

It was also one of the most wicked....most people have no idea of the not-so-subtle symbolism all through this cinematic masterpiece. I thought the opening of the bedroom door for the transition to color from black and white, was cool though....I'm sure it astonished 1939 audiences....like nothing else could.

Awe,..this both broke my heart and made it sing with childhood rememberance at the same time. Moments had me in tears,while others and my smile so wide it nearly split my face. It had me singing along,and absolutely filled with happiness.
Every year this came on for Thanksgiving,and me and my parents gathered in front of the tv to watch it. Every time it came on,..until it didnt,...in 1991.

The wizard of oz is one of my favorite movie, the stars of this film did a great job. Judy Garland inspired me to become an actress she's watching and guiding me in my acting career sometimes I feel her energy while I'm performing on stage and she talks to me in some dreams she's always going to have a special place in my heart forever. I had the great pleasure to speak with director LeRoy in the early 80's. He was a visionary. He was in the middle stages of Alzheimer's disease, but still retained a vivid recollection of his experiences.
I was born in 1960 in a small town in Kansas. We had the first color TV'S on the block and every year all the kids in the neighborhood would be in our living room watching The Wizard of Oz. Mom would make popcorn and carmeled apples for us. It doesn't matter where I have traveled when someone asks me where I'm from and I say Kansas they make a Wizard of Oz references. This video was very well done. THANK YOU!!!!!

It's true. Color TV was around in the early mid 1960s, but it wasn't until the early 1970s, that color TV's became priced affordable for most consumers.
We only had B&W television in our house when I was a boy. I was courting in my 20s when I saw the movie on a colour TV. I couldn't believe they had colourized the movie! I didn't know that the Oz scenes were all originally colour.

These really hit to the heart with sentiment unlike most of the stuff that comes out now a days being so vulgar. It's a shame we've lost so many great 1's. Kinda funny that as a kid it was a huge deal when this movie came on. We didn't have a color TV but it was still amazing to see as a kid. Now I'm 61 and I own a DVD of the movie which I've only watched once since I bought it. Guess I wanted it for sentimental reasons because it was part of my childhood.

Pilots had a high attrition rate and training was expensive. He may have gotten private training before recruited. A lot of planes were badly damaged in training, so pre-training was a relief. Astronauts are relatively short, too. Takes less fuel to put them up and small cabins are less of a problem. In WW1 and 2 there were a few one legged pilots. Among the handicapped, custom car controls enable adjustment to different frames. There was a female pilot corps used to ferry aircraft. Freed up air hours for shooting soldiers. So yeah, if people want to enough, they can get around physical limitations. The frame is less of a problem than the eyes. Vision is not negotiable.
The minimum height allowed in the U.S. services is 60 inches (5 feet). The maximum is 80 inches (6 feet 8 inches).
@@johnhardin4358: Fighter pilots and astronauts, as shorter people, tend to be better-suited for these roles because of the effects of G forces on the body. It's easier to pool blood in a smaller body than a larger one. As a former USAF flier, I had to endue high G forces while in flight.
And yes, smaller bodies did also help to conserve space and fuel when sending up an astronaut.

I "met" her a couple times in her later years--I made deliveries from a florist to her at her son's home where she was visiting. She was pleasant and cordial, at least once tipping me a dollar! (That was a reasonably generous tip at the time). One time she had a dog with her and I was so tempted, when thanking her, to say "And your little dog too," but I didn't have the nerve. I should probably say that I did--it makes a better story and there's nobody to contradict me.

I met Margaret Hamilton in my late 20s at a special St. Patrick's Day potluck at a meeting of The Twelfth Night Club in Manhattan. Lovely elderly woman. She said she was type-cast after playing the witch and it kind of ruined her acting career. She lived a happy life anyway. RIP, Margaret.

My 1st cousins would stay at our Grandmother's house to watch together. I was so scared of the flying monkeys. Love this movie! I still watch it! Another great tour and information. History is so addictive I enjoy it so much.

In my humble opinion, THE greatest film ever made. I have seen “The Wizard of Oz” countless times and I still get choked up at the end. A truly marvelous movie.
It is so special to remember Ray Bolger! He wanted the role of the scarecrow because the scarecrow was with Dorothy the longest! Wonderful talent! He also "Once In Love With Amy" on Broadway. Thank you for including him!

Every time I think of Shirley Temple being cast as Dorothy, it blows my mind. She was so young at the time, it would've changed the film SO MUCH!

Todo is still buried under the 101 motorway in California. Nobody could find his grave when the motorway was being built. Thankfully they have a memorial for him in the same cemetery as Judy garland. RIP
Wizard of oz is such a timeless classic, great film for singing along to, I cry, every time she says to scarecrow, I think I'm going to miss you most of all 😭
got a tear from this. i remember in the mid-60s when my father bought our first color tv, timed so we could watch Oz's technicolor as the local tv station (singular) began broadcasting programs that were in color. a looooong time ago.
The Networks ran ads on TV, and in print, of what shows were in color. A selling point, as not all shows and events were.

Tori Rose yeah I felt the same , and the fact that some of them have been gone for a very long time. I miss Dorthy and fronds .
They are not truely gone they are just in another place of life nothing truely dies they just go to a different plain of existence.
That tends to happen once a film has been out for 80 years. People just suddenly start to die off, funny thing we have not been able to cure that yet. Does your heart get sad for anyone living?
