CHAMONIX - A HIDDEN TREASURE IN THE HEART OF THE ALPS - A UNIQUE TRADITIONAL FRENCH VILLAGE

Chamonix is one of the oldest ski resorts in France. Wherever you are in the Chamonix valley, just look up to see the majestic Mont Blanc peaking at 4,810 meters above sea level. But that's not all: the Glacier des Bossons, the Aiguille du Midi, the Mer de Glace, the Col de Balme, the Aiguille d'Argentière, the Grandes Jorasses, the Dent du Géant... The valley of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is home to thousands of snowy wonders and peaks to observe (or climb!).
In summer, when the snow melts, nature takes over and the landscapes transform, offering a completely different panorama. If Chamonix remains above all a nature destination, its city center is breathtaking. In summer, it is particularly pleasant to stroll through this small flowery town at the foot of the snow-capped mountains. The town of Chamonix was once just a humble mountain village.
Chamonix was part of the historic territory of Savoy, which became feudal territory of the House of Savoy from the 11th to the 14th century. The historic territory is shared between the modern countries of France, Italy and Switzerland. The House of Savoy became the oldest royal house in Europe. He ruled the county of Savoy until 1416 then the duchy of Savoy from 1416 to 1860.
The first to publish (1744) an account of their visit was that of Richard Pococke, William Windham and others, such as the English who visited the Mer de Glace in 1741. The growth of tourism in the early 19th century led to the formation of the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix in 1821, to regulate access to the mountain slopes (which belonged to the community or cooperative), and this association held the monopoly of guides in the town until it be broken by the action of the French government in 1892; subsequently, guides were required to hold a diploma issued by a commission dominated by civil servants and members of the French Alpine Club rather than local residents.
Reflecting its history, Chamonix features a mix of traditional Alpine architecture and more modern buildings. In the center of the city's pedestrian zone is a pretty baroque church. Scattered around Chamonix are old-fashioned chalets and Belle Époque hotels, as well as rustic country lodge
