The routes, the music, the information and of course the drives are all top notch. Thank you for these videos. Now, I must find a new four wheeled road warrior for drives like these.

very nice video jim i have seen your other videos years ago when i was little and i loved your videos and your channel and i'm really glad your back i have seen the construction of the express lanes years ago during our previous vacations and it took a couple of years to be finished and the construction of it on your older videos were great for your ride in atlanta years ago i'm so glad your back after months ago.

Great video despite the weather conditions; well you and I had one thing in common that day (Dec 16th) with me; we were both filming road video in Georgia, albeit opposite ends of the Peach State. I'm looking forward to driving the "Tollercoaster" myself visiting family in Cobb; looking forward to your 2019 season!

You pretty much drive the speed limit that I can observe from your videos, but I was clutching my seat as I watched the two other vehicles pass you as if you where standing still, that is most definitely a prime example of how you should not drive on wet pavement! Wisconsin finished the rebuild of the Zoo Interchange (I-94/41/894/US-41/45) in Milwaukee, WI from the dinosaur it was into a impressive four level stack interchange, and several of the neighboring interchanges for the major arteries in the area. Worth a visit to see!
I pass this thing everyday and was considering getting a peach pass but it’s pointless because I only use 285 west. So it’s good to see you do this cause I was curious to see how it looked!

A Fantastic way to start off Season 19. I'm surprised it was that cheap for you to use the Express Lanes. I'm guessing you drove it during a part of the day when the roads weren't too busy? Because I wouldn't be surprised if they charge more to use it during the Rush Hour Periods. As for the Term "Tollercoaster", it makes sense, but you have to remember that I-75 is sort jammed into that Area of Marietta, so It shouldn't really come as a surprise to how all over the place the Express Lanes are. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to more content!
The lane prices don't fluctuate hardly at all. I frequent the lanes and I never see them change price any more than a 10¢ fluctuation. The lanes are never that busy, there can be times where there are a good amount of cars, but they are always moving.
Drove on the Tri-State a couple times last spring and I personally think they need to full-on NJTPK EVERYTHING from I-55ish to I-90. Semi volumes ALONE within a lot of the Chicagoland was nothing short of insane... DON'T even think of getting me started on the expressways within...
Schwenda those aren’t expressways. They are the Illinois Superspeedway. Come in 3 styles. The Northern speedway{294}, the. Northwestern Speedway(90), and the Western Speedway(88).

Tollercoaster....what a great nickname! Also kinda a shame that there is not a standardized electronic pass / toll system that can be used in all states. I know there are several different systems out there, would be great if they could all communicate with each other.
well here in Australia, all our toll roads on the east coast (Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane) are electronic and are all compatible with each other. I heard some bill passed Congress that eventually required all toll roads to be compatible with each other.

Did this feel kind of like a small rollercoaster? There is a road called Rollercoaster in Tucson AZ, and has hard deeps, ups and curves it also it is near residential areas so, the people there wake up for sure before going to work in the morning:). Fun road!!!

I guess "or else" means that we'll have to admire it from a short distance, should 12-12-7's route bring us near (fingers crossed). What a ride! It *does* seem to resemble an amusement park thrill ride.

How do they handle reversing the lanes? I know there are barriers, but is there an extended time for the lanes to clear prior to the reverse, and how can they tell when the entire length is clear?
In Chicago a police car, or state vehicle, goes in the direction that's about to close. Then the gates are closed behind them, ensuring that no-one is heading in the wrong direction, so you don't have a major head on at highway speeds.
I don't know exactly but you are probably close to correct and they have cameras all along the route to make sure it's clear before opening the opposite direction.
I think they simply mean that these exits are unavailable to the traffic on the normal freeway at all. They simply do not exist. They likely do not have entrance ramps, but they could since the billing is electronic.
@@swinde I completely understood that the exits are exclusive to the tolled express lane. The problem is that this tollway reverses direction probably twice a day. If traffic is allowed to enter at any of these points, there needs to be appropriate controls to ensure that they can only enter the correct direction, above and beyond electronic signage, since there are (unfortunately) drivers that would confuse the traffic pattern change even with electronic signs. If they are strictly exit only, then the issue becomes much easier to control since the bottom of the ramp can be engineered to make entrance rather difficult without the need to use barriers.

Btw, how expensive do all these new express lanes in Atlanta get during rush hour when compared to other places? Heard D.C's on demand toll prices are nothing short of bat ish insanity... hopefully it ain't that expensive...
@@Freewayjim 🌷 ok that makes sense 👍 I'm curious about driving conditions on it during rush. When it gets down to a one - laner in certain places, ppl will def need to be careful. I'm thinking a significant amount of drivers will choose it more and more for events they are traveling to and so forth. Time will tell. (and of course those just passing thru also).
@@tjtampa214 You have to have a GA, NC or FL toll transponder to use it so mostly it will serve local traffic, and the pricing is variable based on current traffic conditions.

Thanks, it was an early Sunday morning, the ExpressLanes on I-85 have been higher than $10 at some peak periods.
Wow! Makes me wish I drove through Atlanta more often. I would totally get the Peach Pass, but I think I’ll just stick to the west side for now.
Living in Wisconsin, we do not have any tolls, but I am impressed with how it turned out. Illinois Tollway needs to look at what Georgia has done.
Georgia plans to build more toll lanes in the Atlanta area.

If I’m not mistaken the Express lanes on I-85 S in Gwinnett and DeKalb allow you to use N.C. and FL transponders

How do they handle reversing the lanes? I know there are barriers, but is there an extended time for the lanes to clear prior to the reverse, and how can they tell when the entire length is clear?
In Chicago a police car, or state vehicle, goes in the direction that's about to close. Then the gates are closed behind them, ensuring that no-one is heading in the wrong direction, so you don't have a major head on at highway speeds.
I don't know exactly but you are probably close to correct and they have cameras all along the route to make sure it's clear before opening the opposite direction.
Or, for that matter, how are the "exclusive exits" handled, beyond some electronic no turn/do not enter signs? Or are strictly exit only?
I think they simply mean that these exits are unavailable to the traffic on the normal freeway at all. They simply do not exist. They likely do not have entrance ramps, but they could since the billing is electronic.
@@swinde I completely understood that the exits are exclusive to the tolled express lane. The problem is that this tollway reverses direction probably twice a day. If traffic is allowed to enter at any of these points, there needs to be appropriate controls to ensure that they can only enter the correct direction, above and beyond electronic signage, since there are (unfortunately) drivers that would confuse the traffic pattern change even with electronic signs.
If they are strictly exit only, then the issue becomes much easier to control since the bottom of the ramp can be engineered to make entrance rather difficult without the need to use barriers.

Btw, how expensive do all these new express lanes in Atlanta get during rush hour when compared to other places? Heard D.C's on demand toll prices are nothing short of bat ish insanity... hopefully it ain't that expensive...

I'm thinking a significant amount of drivers will choose it more and more for events they are traveling to and so forth. Time will tell. (and of course those just passing thru also).
@@tjtampa214 You have to have a GA, NC or FL toll transponder to use it so mostly it will serve local traffic, and the pricing is variable based on current traffic conditions.

Thanks and they are, there are cameras along the route so it's safe to assume GDOT would have a handle on things.

I wish Ontario would do this with the HOV lanes on the 403 (have separate exit ramps, instead of having to cut through 3-4 lanes)

No thanks, that's a really old video, no point in bringing that back, hopefully, I'll film a new one someday when the construction is done....that video was shot on a pretty overcast day although I don't know why that matters from over 10 years ago.
