Mama Cass, a Baltimore native herself, actually got these folks signed after hearing them just once. Another great achievement in her short life.

"They were signed to Decca Records in 1968 at the behest of talent agent Alan White at Action Talents in NYC, who brought them to New York and showcased them for producer Paul Leka who saw them play and sing both a medley of the Mamas and the Papas and the 5th Dimension tunes.[2] They changed their name to "The Peppermint Rainbow" following their signing by Leka."

@@SilverSergeantGood move on that name change . Those girls Bonnie Lambdin and her sister Patti were off the charts beautiful but it was wholesome sex appeal not a crass vulgar one . This was sunshine pop at its finest . The genre went “poof “ but it showed up again in the 80s with Katrina and the Waves with “ Walking On Sunshine ! “ and I guess Mark Ronson’s Valerie sung by Amy Winehouse is a homage to that genre !

Except bubblegum songs didn’t go for oboes. And the melody isn’t silly catchy like bubblegum pop.

They were very similar to Spanky and our Gang especially with the song Are You staying after Sunday !!!

The Peppermint Rainbow were an American sunshine pop group from Baltimore, Maryland. They formed in 1967 under the name New York Times, and played local gigs in the mid-Atlantic states before changing their name to the Peppermint Rainbow in 1968. They were signed to Decca Records at the behest of Cass Elliot, who saw them play and sang with them on-stage when they performed a medley of The Mamas & the Papas tunes

Pre-'Sunday'; sounds like the Rainbow crossed with Leka's other big record from '68, the Lemon Pipers' "Green Tambourine". Nice sound. The record had the MCA label in the UK because Decca there was a different company; home at the time to the Moody Blues and Rolling Stones. Decca UK was known as London Records here.

    • @flexxmi
      @flexxmi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

PAUL LEKA actually stripped the LEMON PIPERS' vocals from "Green Tambourine" and gave the instrumental track to THE PEPPERMINT RAINBOW to record their own version of it which is on side 2 of this album.

  • @catman3552

This has a psychodelic sound to it like the Lemon Pipers or that sort. I see the two sisters on the album cover have lost a serious amount of weight. Born in '60 but didn't know the "Will you be staying" song till I found it on youtube. I like this music.

Paul Leka knew how to write a potent melody and this is one of his best examples. And the Peppermint Rainbow was the perfect group to convey it. I consider this one of the best records of the 60's.

I saw them at The Club in Rochester, NY 1969. They were a self contained group. 2 sisters-lead singer and back up singer/organ. They were good. The lead singer was pregnant at the time so I guess that was about the end of that.

Yes, the lyrics are impossible to find. Anyway, here's my shot at it: (corrections are welcome)
Pink lemonade two straws in a glass /
that glitters just like the sun /
Pink lemonade with a red submarine /
floating round for two but makes us one /
Pink lemonade into crystals I gaze /
takes me into love's masquerade /
And as we sip the glass rose that we reap /
Let the sweet taste of love never fade /

@DoofsterDan This band, like a lot of bands were and still are, influenced by other bands. Spanky & Our Gang sounded like The 5th Dimension, which were influenced by The Mamas and the Papas among others... If anything, Peppermint Rainbow (in this song and "...After Sunday") owe more to the 5th Dimension for their sound than they do to Spanky, in my opinion.
