A backflow device should be used on any cross connection to a potable and non potable water source. The sprinkler system is considered a non potable water source an rpz, double check, avb, or pvb valves are sufficient sources backflow devices for irrigation systems. Also a master valve is extremely important as it removes the constant pressure from the main line. I know in this install your mainline is only about 5ft but those who tie into a water source other than your hose bib will have a much larger main line..
I would have moved the tap so it wasn’t in the middle of the lawn. And stipping the wires when putting them into the scotchlocks (gel caps) not needed and in fact could cause issues in the future. Those things are designed to put an insulated wire in, then when crimped a v shaped blade comes down on the wire and slices the insulation to make contact with the wire. The insulation helps keep it in. Striping it before it may not hold as tightly as it should which could lead to a loose connection.
i’m kicking myself i didn’t think to put in a simple irrigation system when i did the back yard. it’s only about 50m2 of lawn but still a pain to do by hand and a funny shape so a single or even double sprinkler won’t do it. might have to look into installing a system at the same time as doing a reno next season would only need to be 1 zone i think so should be pretty straight forward and hopefully can keep the damage to a minimum.
I'm an 19 year vet of irrigation... Residential and commercial multi-wire and two wire well and geothermal irrigation systems. What I am seeing right off the bat is they trenched the lines in instead of a vibroplow which pulls the line in and when the soil settles you cannot tell where they are....second I would not use those valve tie ins because they are not reliable. Your going to end up with leaks near the valves.
Massive thanks for this comment. Great information! I’m not sure what a vibroplow is, had a search (I’m in Australia 🇦🇺) and couldn’t find the info but I can report the tie ins to the valves have ruptured once and been replaced unfortunately with the same setup. I’ll look to fix that soon and blueline to the tap with a plumber as that is regulation where I live.
www.ditchwitch.com/trenchers/vibratory-plows/vp30 This is a vibroplow...it pulls the lines in instead of trenching...with trenching you have to leave the soil lumped up so when it settles it doesn't leave lines in the soil as indentions. Here in the states or places that earth quakes and hi humidity and then extreme dry conditions the ground moves and vibrates when the system kicks on and off so we use sch 40 pvc main line with 100 psi poly lines after the valves with swing pipe for head connection.
I would have to cut concrete to lay controller cable. It’s just a cleaner finish. Indoor controller boxes and WiFi systems are such a small touch but big difference in long term satisfaction.
You should have just hard piped it up the last post, then over to the brick wall and down from there. It would've looked a lot cleaner and wouldn't be a tripping hazard.
Any irrigation system supplied from scheme water requires at a minimum a dual check valve to prevent backflow this is why plumbers need to do the cut in/connection to scheme supply. A master solenoid valve is also required to be installed as a fail safe on the system. Using low density poly pipe as a mainline and subjecting it to constant pressure (as has been done in this install) is a failure waiting to happen. Control cables for valves should be buried under pipework, as it is easily damaged by digging/coring/renovation work. Articulated risers are all the go.
Yes, very surprised they used LDPE for the main line. No back flow as well would be a no go here in NSW. No need to strip the wires going into the gel wire joiners. Apart from that a good how to video.
Im a lawn novice at best but watching this was very entertaining and informative. Awesome work mate and nice plug for the boys from Adelaide. Really enjoying your content🤙
Ripper video Matt, great content and descriptions for all the people looking at putting in there own irrigation system. Keep the videos coming Big Fella 💪
Have you ever heard of companies that actually mark the location of the pipes?? It seems like most companies do not bother with that. Extremely important to know where the pipes are located. it's so ridiculous that so many companies don't bury a wire or mark them on a map or something. Anything.
@@lawnporn thanks. I used to do utility locating. I'm amazed that everything in the ground is mapped on computers and also wired for locating, and water lines have nothing. So any future repairs or landscaping are going to be extremely painful for the homeowner. Which could be avoided with measurements or maybe $20 worth of wire. 😀
Where is this, and what is the soil make up there? Looks like clay-sand? Good job on the install, the MP rotators are fascinating to watch. Almost as mesmerizing as the old impacts.
Awesome video, about to tackle my own very soon. Can you provide a link or more detail on those flexible arms the sprinklers were connected to please mate?
Hi Mark. I don’t believe there is a direct link unfortunately. The best thing to do is to speak to your local Reece Irrigation store. Go to Reece.com.au to find the store closest. They can also send via post. I would assume that all Reece irrigation stores have those riser kits but if not, I got mine from Reece Irrigation & Pools in Adelaide. They are on Elizabeth St. 08 8211 5940 is the phone number. I hope that helps!
Thank you for this content!!! I’m applying to the irrigation crew where I work and this video will help. I’ve never done irrigation before but I did work at a truck wash where I performed maintenance ( around 10 years), and this is similar to what I did. Is there any other advice that you could give me to help my chances?
Glad it was helpful! As other commenters have pointed out, the tap to the irrigation box needs to be done by a plumber. Unfortunately at the tie of making this video, I was missing one bit to make the connection using the blue line pipe so a temp fix with just normal irrigation line was used. Other than that, as you have worked in the car wash, just think that water flows in a line, if something is not working up the line then something is wrong before ii. Good luck with job app!!
I have 40 fruit trees in my back yard I'd like to put a drip system on. I'll need to run about 250ft of blank line to reach them all. My question is, how many 1 gph brips can I run at one time? I have about 65lbs of pressure on my faucet. Any help would be appreciated.
Weather matic is bad. Spray heads…rain bird 1804. 1806 1812 depending on grass or shrub beds, hunter ultra pgp rotars must have or I20 depending drainage problems
I am a bit anal on some things . I personally would have gone under the walkway and not routing the cables through a conduit . An invisible magic is the best magic
There is a small mention in this video but you are right, it should be highlighted more and I super appreciate this feedback because I’ll incorporate it into another irrigation install video for sure 👍
Great documentation of install. Irrigation is such a blessing. My recommendation is to not skimp on heads, get good/even coverage, it will pay off. 😀
That’s awesome!! Thanks for stopping by with that comment.
Great video and tips from professionals. DIYers are gonna DIY anyway, so it’s great to know the right way.
Thanks for that. I really appreciate it.

There is something special about watching sprinklers after a hard days yaka. Mmmmm yeah
Yeah there is for sure. Hope you are all good.
Yeah mate. All is well in the Caddy house hold. Accept having a dormant lawn. Noooooo. Lol
The tap looks so beautiful in the middle of the lawn.
Looks like it’s worth getting the professionals in 👌🏼
Yeah for sure but hopefully this job also inspires some DIY too.
As long as your not considering this a pro job
Great video! Am about to setup an irrigation system myself and this was very useful to plan how to do it. Txs! Hope your lawn is great now!
Thanks for this message. It has come a long way. Can’t wait for next growing season.
how did it go?

Reno is a great time to do the irrigation upgrade.

Yeah for sure. Love it!
Hell of a video boys keep it up

There is no way I would have ever ran that whip across the top of that sidewalk like that....Man, you got to find a way to hide it.
I hear you. It was a rented house and the owners didn’t want any cutting of the concrete unfortunately.

I find it amusing about the double check. Need them if you plump in behind the tap, but not if you connect to the tap lol.
So interesting that our irrigation in the USA is opposite with hard PVC for the mains and "funny" soft pipe to the heads.
Im a lawn novice at best but watching this was very entertaining and informative. Awesome work mate and nice plug for the boys from Adelaide. Really enjoying your content🤙
Super thanks for that.
Nice Job Designscape!!
They are awesome!!
Great video 👍 keep them up 👍
I’ll give it a crack.
And conveniently the tap is right there, the complicated part is connection to water source as most people dont just have a tap there
This place was a rental. I asked about some modifications however I had to keep it in the place the owner wanted.
Ripper video Matt, great content and descriptions for all the people looking at putting in there own irrigation system. Keep the videos coming Big Fella 💪
Sweet as. Sweet as. Thanks mate.
At 17:21, I see a trip-condition. The power cable conduit is above the walkway. Not safe! Other than that....good job!
Thanks. Yeah not my house and unfortunately couldn't get approval to muck up the concrete. Cheers for looking out and commenting!
Montel Jordan singing This Is How We Do It minute 5:58, LOL love it.
Cool song for sure
Great video 👌🏽
Thanks so much.
Howdy, kudos to the vid, very informative, whats the brand of that modular manifold set up? Thanks in Advanced.
Enki manifold
Now the fun begins!
You got it in one!

You fellas must be in Melbourne in July aye
Very great video
Very good job boys! Thanks
That soil is sure red in color, where is this located, Mars?
Port Augusta
Yeahhhhhhh buddyyy, happy wednesday matt 👍👌
You too!
@@lawnporn hey matt sorry for random question but how long the boys take?
peterpan not that long actually. Had to do some local hardware shop runs for a few things and filming slowed them up some.
Hi Matt, are you going to have a putting green in this lawn? Great vid very detailed.
You betcha 👍
Awesome video
What about shut off valve for backflow.
still left with so many questions similar to other videos.

800 roles of thread tape plus lock seal? I feel bad for whoever has to take that off.
Correct. Do one or the other. I don’t think lock seal is recommended for poly fittings anyway.
you dont need a backflow preventer for inline valves?
The un protected cable in the ground is hard for me to accept without conduit.
That's a fair statement.
With the removal of the garden bed, does this mean you will have the tap and the irrigation box in the lawn?
Yes they will both be in the lawn area. I don’t mind that but this is not my house. If it was I probably would have gone the extra and moved them.
I have 40 fruit trees in my back yard I'd like to put a drip system on. I'll need to run about 250ft of blank line to reach them all. My question is, how many 1 gph brips can I run at one time? I have about 65lbs of pressure on my faucet. Any help would be appreciated.
Jesus, If a company ran conduit over the concrete like that at my house they would be coming back to fix it. That’s horrendous.
Hi. Not my house as I rent. Owner didn’t want the concrete disturbed or the tap moved.
I can't watch this.... You all still have a lot to learn
yep !!!
Nice video. Background music is way too loud over your talking.
Thanks mate. Totally appreciate that.
no backflow?
Is Oscar the same guy that developed the worlds most efficient air conditioner that cools a room in 1 minute and uses no refrigerant?
Maybe?
company name --boss level 99
How much does it cost to get this installed by an irrigation guy?
Similar size lawn
To be honest I’ve either done it myself or done it with someone who wants to get on the video. It’s hard yakka so it wouldn’t be cheap.
Weather matic is bad. Spray heads…rain bird 1804. 1806 1812 depending on grass or shrub beds, hunter ultra pgp rotars must have or I20 depending drainage problems
I’ve had 1803’s and I had some problems with some at the seal.
Weathermatic have finished In Australia 🇦🇺 now so I’ll probs switch to RB’s or Hunters.
Yeah yeah
Ahaha yep
Hilarious
I'm Mexican and I don't know to do set up sprinklers 😔
Why they didn’t use pvc pipe
yep yep, yeah yeah, yep
Sorry

I get you. This house is not my house so I couldn’t get permission for such things.
Never install sprinkler heads hard up or close to anything, Give yourself plently of room for maintenance.
YEP !
I know I know I say it way too much
Nice back flow 😐
........YEEP!
That conduit job was hard to watch.
I get it. Not my house and couldn't get permission for cutting up the verandah..
Yep
Every single video on this subject NEVER shows how they measure where the heads go. What’s the point leaving that out?
There is a small mention in this video but you are right, it should be highlighted more and I super appreciate this feedback because I’ll incorporate it into another irrigation install video for sure 👍
Someone will put a spade through that control wire one-day not being in a conduit
Yup
Ahhh it was going fine until the flexible conduit came out 🤮..
Yeah fair enough. It is just what I had lying around so I used it.
@@lawnporn yep didnt like that either , if traffic stand on it,
