Great video tyler. I think the key to wprming cows especially by yourself is patients. Nothing makes wprking cows go south is that one guy thats starts yelling and screaming and getting whip happy. Thanks for sharing

I grew up on a dairy when I was a teenager and early 20’s. In my early 40’s my foot started hurting so I went to the foot doctor and he said where I broke my foot did not heal back correctly. I said I’ve never broken that foot and he said I’ve broken it twice. I know how much a full grown Holstein weighs when she standing on top of your foot so I felt your pain. Thanks for your vids, I drink my morning coffee with them.

Great video-good way to start the new year! Folks who’ve never worked with 1500 lb animals don’t realize how dangerous even a docile-looking animal can be. A cow with a mind of its own is a formidable critter. I never got kicked by a cow, but I got my foot stepped on by a horse. All it takes is once to learn to not let your mind wander when working with big animals!

This is a great video for anyone learning to handle cattle... slow, calm, no yelling, no shocker. We preg checked 45 last night in 1hour and 20 min. Had 1 bad group of cows that slowed us down. Always a good day when no one gets hurt!

As a country boy I grew up milking. One of the first things I learned was, “ A cow has to cock it leg to kick you.” Literally a cow’s leg Must travel forward to kick backwards. Still I received numerous kicks through the years. I just always hoped it would be by the Hoover and not the dew claw. Those dew claws can and do skin you upp, often through a pair of jeans. Another Great video Tyler, keep them coming.
I love how calm you are around the cattle. A tough skill for some to learn. My 2 cents? Life’s too short for big wild cows. If they can’t be trusted in a pasture, get rid of em. Buy some smaller, more gentle replacements. 1000lbs is plenty big enough for a cow.

Every herd has that number 20 cow. Was working a group a few weeks ago and turned around in the pen. Wasn’t real close to the cows but one decided to ease on over to me and kicked me in the leg. Luckily it was in the muscle and wasn’t a solid shot. Keep up the good work!
I also work cows by myself. Loading gets my heart pumping, too. I always seem to have one turn around and try to come back on me. Then it’s a game of “chicken” to see who turns first. I need to invest in a nicer handling setup like you’ve got. I recently moved about 50 beef cows 1000 miles. I sold all the girls with a bad attitude and those hard on fences before the move.
Excellent video Tyler. Cow's have their own personality and their attitude can change on a whim. You may work cattle and all goes great no issues then the next time you work them it's like dang what else is going to go wrong.

A friend got kicked in the thigh by a 6 to 9 mos old calf and the doctors told him he was LUCKY, it just bruised the femur. It took 6 mos to heal from that. We thought for sure his leg was shattered. I can't say I blame you for the flash backs....lol Keep up the good work!

How you doing I from La i love your shows you like me I do my farm my self my working pen is fixed far me i don't run my cows I take a white bucket and put a hand full of rocks in and just Shack it and they are coming I take my time the last 4 years my grandson helps me out a little I have stage 4 Lung Cancer and I not like I was but this is what keeps me going is working with my cows But get back to you keep putting some good stuff on you reminded me of the way I started I had over 135 head wine igot sick I cut back to 45 Head you never know what to look for when you wake up now I live from DayToDay You be Safe out With the cows Amen 👍👍🐂🐂🐂🙏🙏

With exception of the mud in the pen your setup beats what we had to death. Got kicked by a brown swiss at a dairy I worked at. I took to pre milk cleaning her from the next stall with a metal pipe barn loft support between her foot and my body. She tried for a really hard kick that made the pipe ring. That cow did limp a few days but never tried to kick me again.
I just worked mine a couple days ago,Only 17 but i preg the cows so its a job.I put up a video of them on the stalk pasture yesterday!Nice looking girls you have!
Nice set up. I recently got an old squeeze chute and repaired it for my use. Now I get to sort of copy your setup to get them in the chute by myself. I only have 10 cows on my hobby farm but it is going to be a lot easier and safer in the future

Thanks BTO yes I did build it but that was just before my TH-cam career started! Too bad too, that would have given me a ton of videos. Corral design is tough! I planned that out for over a year and there’s already a few things that I want to change!
Thanks Jacky me too! Yes I built the tub with a Harbor Freight tube roller to get the radius on the tube. It was a lot of work but came out really nice. Smooth bends!
You should explain that you have to do the branding before the pour-on wormer. Most wormers are flammable. You shouldn't use a hot-shot and pour-on together either.

I don't see the point in making them dread their next trip to the pens. I know guys that will recruit six people to work as many cows as you did by yourself, I guess thinking it will get done quicker. The owner rams eight in the tub and to save time they apply the pour-on there. I've never seen any wormer fires at the pens, but I have seen a couple Vets jump out of their skin when someone gets a hold of a hot-shot.
Number 29 cracks me up! She was steaming even before it was her turn in the shoot. LOL And she sure would have rammed you hard if she wasn't stuck. Mean ole bitty she is.
Fence breakers and mean cows go to our winter pasture, the sale yard. Cattle are just like us, for the most part pretty docile but crowd their personal space or make them go where they don't know where they are going, they can become very dangerous. The number 20 shown is like one of our calm cows as we have had cows hit the squeeze chute so hard, we worried about the welds holding.
Yeah that didn’t really make it on camera. Out of the chute there is a gate that either puts them out to the corral when open or sends them to the trailer if it’s closed. It’s all temporary now hope to build it permanent soon

I used to help my Brother in law every summer and spring with his cows. They were Angus and sometimes a little mean. It seemed that they would always look at what the other was doing and if it was good they would do the opposite. If bad they would join in the mayhem. And brother you didn't want to mess with a calf while mom was around.
UR always amazing what U can do Tyler. Some of those girls are getting pretty wide trying 2 exit the head lock. What is it about an cow/heifer with 20 as their number, Ben @ VCC HAD a psycho heifer with # 1020. I like the 4 leg/2 leg analogy. Don't forget 2 take the water hose 2 UR jeans before asking Mrs FTR 2 do laundry! 👍👏😊

I've been kicked by a cow but just as the hoof started to land, my uncle grabbed me and pulled me out of range. I was only eleven but it definitely was lesson learned. He yelled at me and said city kids were stupid around dairy cattle., 😂😂😂
Not nice of your uncle, but he wasn't incorrect either. I worked a dairy farm from the age of 11 to 13 (almost 14). I've witnessed some reckless behavior by city folk and country folk alike when it comes to cows. People do not realize just how mean they can be when they need to be or feel they need to be and sometimes you just get a plain mean one. Glad you didn't get caught square by that hoof. You could have been killed by that one kick. You definitely had an angel on your side that day. 😉
Paulla Wells, I thought it was going to step on a kitten. When my Aunt came in to start breakfast, she said after I ran out of the barn he cried. She said I had scared the life out of him. When he came to breakfast he hugged me so tight I thought my ribs would break. I really miss him to this day. He was a retired rodeo champion and always let me ride with him. Believe me, whenever I went to the barn area after that day, stayed in front of the cows.
@@virginiareid5336 - Bless his heart! Often times that is where that yelling comes from in folks. The farm I worked was one of the largest in a four state area so when they were milked it was I think 20 at a time. Ten to each side of the milking room. They were fed during milking which helped keep them calm and facing the correct direction, but we were always behind them in order to work them for the milk. The difference is that they were on a concrete platform inside a heavily built metal shoot of sorts. If they tried to kick, and often they did, they could not extend their leg, but any mud or poo stuck on them then became stuck on us. So I guess you could say they still got their hit in just in another way. LOL So, it really is a good thing you learned the right side of a cow to be on. 😁😳
Paulla Wells, the room did have a concrete floor, but the girls stepped down just a little to put their heads in the wooden head holders to get the sweet silage he fed during milking. I remember some of them trying to push by others to get inside. He stood there and tried to let his heaviest milkers in first. Brownie, a brown Swiss he had always had to have a second machine attached to milk her. I have so enjoyed chatting with you as it brought back very sweet and cherished memories. Thank you.
As someone just getting started with cattle, I'm curious - how many hours a day of your time (on average) do these 40 cows take up? I'm getting 15 next week and still have a full time job, although I work from home and have pretty flexible hours.
What a hard job that is for one person. Do not get more cattle, oh you will have. In that case see if you can call the University at Davis and get some one out for AG credit to help you at times.

How about that heat branding. In my country it is forbidden. but it seems like the cows didnt really bother. We now use cold branding works like a stick in a lot of ice press it hard at the cow/heifer wait 30seconds and done you dont need a painkiller. You where using that if i heard it correct.

You should explain that you have to do the branding before the pour-on wormer. Most wormers are flammable. You shouldn't use a hot-shot and pour-on together either.

@@farmertylerranch4399, I enjoyed your video. I think most of us know. You work your cattle nice and easy. I'm that way as well. I don't see the point in making them dread their next trip to the pens. I know guys that will recruit six people to work as many cows as you did by yourself, I guess thinking it will get done quicker. The owner rams eight in the tub and to save time they apply the pour-on there. I've never seen any wormer fires at the pens, but I have seen a couple Vets jump out of their skin when someone gets a hold of a hot-shot.

Fence breakers and mean cows go to our winter pasture, the sale yard. Cattle are just like us, for the most part pretty docile but crowd their personal space or make them go where they don't know where they are going, they can become very dangerous. The number 20 shown is like one of our calm cows as we have had cows hit the squeeze chute so hard, we worried about the welds holding.

Yeah that didn’t really make it on camera. Out of the chute there is a gate that either puts them out to the corral when open or sends them to the trailer if it’s closed. It’s all temporary now hope to build it permanent soon

I used to help my Brother in law every summer and spring with his cows. They were Angus and sometimes a little mean. It seemed that they would always look at what the other was doing and if it was good they would do the opposite. If bad they would join in the mayhem. And brother you didn't want to mess with a calf while mom was around.
We had Herefords. Nice gentle, but always got pinkeye. Started cross breeding to angus. Got rid of the pinkeye, but they had a temper and would fight!

What is it about an cow/heifer with 20 as their number, Ben @ VCC HAD a psycho heifer with # 1020. I like the 4 leg/2 leg analogy. Don't forget 2 take the water hose 2 UR jeans before asking Mrs FTR 2 do laundry! 👍👏😊

I've been kicked by a cow but just as the hoof started to land, my uncle grabbed me and pulled me out of range. I was only eleven but it definitely was lesson learned. He yelled at me and said city kids were stupid around dairy cattle., 😂😂😂
Not nice of your uncle, but he wasn't incorrect either. I worked a dairy farm from the age of 11 to 13 (almost 14). I've witnessed some reckless behavior by city folk and country folk alike when it comes to cows. People do not realize just how mean they can be when they need to be or feel they need to be and sometimes you just get a plain mean one. Glad you didn't get caught square by that hoof. You could have been killed by that one kick. You definitely had an angel on your side that day. 😉
Paulla Wells, I thought it was going to step on a kitten. When my Aunt came in to start breakfast, she said after I ran out of the barn he cried. She said I had scared the life out of him. When he came to breakfast he hugged me so tight I thought my ribs would break. I really miss him to this day. He was a retired rodeo champion and always let me ride with him. Believe me, whenever I went to the barn area after that day, stayed in front of the cows.
@@virginiareid5336 - Bless his heart! Often times that is where that yelling comes from in folks. The farm I worked was one of the largest in a four state area so when they were milked it was I think 20 at a time. Ten to each side of the milking room. They were fed during milking which helped keep them calm and facing the correct direction, but we were always behind them in order to work them for the milk. The difference is that they were on a concrete platform inside a heavily built metal shoot of sorts. If they tried to kick, and often they did, they could not extend their leg, but any mud or poo stuck on them then became stuck on us. So I guess you could say they still got their hit in just in another way. LOL So, it really is a good thing you learned the right side of a cow to be on. 😁😳
Paulla Wells, the room did have a concrete floor, but the girls stepped down just a little to put their heads in the wooden head holders to get the sweet silage he fed during milking. I remember some of them trying to push by others to get inside. He stood there and tried to let his heaviest milkers in first. Brownie, a brown Swiss he had always had to have a second machine attached to milk her. I have so enjoyed chatting with you as it brought back very sweet and cherished memories. Thank you.

As someone just getting started with cattle, I'm curious - how many hours a day of your time (on average) do these 40 cows take up? I'm getting 15 next week and still have a full time job, although I work from home and have pretty flexible hours.
What a hard job that is for one person. Do not get more cattle, oh you will have. In that case see if you can call the University at Davis and get some one out for AG credit to help you at times.

Thanks Dayspring Farm. I really like having a full squeeze chute but you can do a lot with a GOOD head gate.
How about that heat branding.
In my country it is forbidden. but it seems like the cows didnt really bother. We now use cold branding works like a stick in a lot of ice press it hard at the cow/heifer wait 30seconds and done you dont need a painkiller. You where using that if i heard it correct.
Some cows handle it better than others. That one handled it pretty good
