    I think it was pretty close but the echo was less pronounced in the Amplitube version. The Rockman had a much more "airy feel"

      Totally agree with this, but the good news is that it's Amplitube . . . if you don't like it, you can turn it off and add it back in with another effect in Amplitube or a different plugin altogether.

    The Amplitude plugin is "missing" that doubling/wide-spatial effect that the X100 has. Tone wise it's close, but Amplitude sounds thinner and has less reverb effect than the real deal.

      To be fair, the plug-in can be dialed in really close, if not better. Slap a few toner plugins on your track, drop in some reverb, and there ya go. You can get a really good sound with the plug-in. Don’t make the mistake of thinking Def Leppard recorded straight through this thing and nothing else. You know those guitars went through preamps, compressors, reverbs, more preamps, etc.

When you get it restored do NOT get the switches changed since now you can inch slowly between the detents and tap into different and very useable sounds that you can't get otherwise. On all the examples the rockman had more ambiance. Maybe that’s the wrong word, chime? Hiss? Reverb? Something lingering that shimmers between notes. But in amplitude it went away and was cleaner so the quiet tiny spaces between notes were, well, quieter. Both are we useful but that secret sauce that the Rockman has might be this. What do think? Did you hear it this way as well? And could it be added into amplitube?

    Compression, distortion, reverb, sustain are better on Rockman. The clean sounds are sharper on Rockman and slightly muffled on Amplitube. So, Rockman wins! It's that grunge 70s Rock Sounds that Tom Scholz created from his M.I.T education & engineering imagination he built into His Rockman machine. That Boston Sound. So far others have come close. But not quite! Plug in Rockman for the first time, you will hear & feel the difference from the imitators. I want someone to get it right, but so far they can't. Maybe Tom Scholz can get the Rights back. Or if he didn't sign them away when he sold the company, he should make them again. It's the Analog Sound that gives The Rockman the edge over the Amplitude electronic sound. They would sell like hotcakes. Nice video.

    Well said "the amplitude version sounds a little anemic to me and lacks character". It sounded pretty good, but there was a distinct difference particularly in the overdrive. If they were to bring back the original X100 in all its glory, there would be record sales.

    For the original rockman sound on a budget, get a Donner Alpha Cruncher pedal for about $50. It has 80s style distortion and you can switch off either or both delay and chorus. Play with the levels for about 5 minutes and you can find the sound.

    To my ears, the Rockman sounds better in every setting. It's much fuller and less brittle than the Amplitube. Also, it's a bit warmer with a less "processed" sound.
    This video makes me wish I would've purchased a Rockman back in the day. If I remember correctly, weren't they normally $99, and on sale occasionally for $79? I'm pretty sure I remember seeing them for those prices at my local guitar shop.

    The actual hardware driven Rockman sounds better although it’s close. I don’t think it’s close enough if you are really chasing that true sound. Then again I feel that way about all plug-ins. I’m definitely more into hardware driven sound rather than digital computer generated sounds although I feel they can be utilized together at times when the need arises.

  • @brettmarlar4154
    @brettmarlar4154 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The actual hardware unit seems to have a bit more grit in the high end. On the drive sounds it sounds like there's a slight bump on what tube amps would be the presence control to give it a bit of sizzle. On the clean settings, this bump in those frequencies give it a bit more shimmery sparkle. The plugin sounds as if they used a low-pass filter to tame that sizzle and sparkle. Of course your unit being analog, could also have those characteristics due to the components that were used that the unit they modeled didn't.
    That being said, the plugin is VERY close. Nearly perfect, and an EQ could add that sizzle back in should you need it. I would say it is very worthy considering the price point.

    I bought an X100 in november 2019, it's more of a treasure than an amp now, it cost me $200 with its original box, headphones and instructions, I'm a big fan of Def Leppard and love the 80s so this was a "must-have" thing for me.
    That emulation is one of the closests I've ever heard. I read somewhere that Def Leppard and ZZ Top used Rockmans X100 modded by Tom Scholz himself, I think Alex Lifeson used them too and many other artists, this little black and blue box was really everywhere in the 80s.
    Listen 'Push it to the Limit' (Scarface), I think it is the Rockman.

    like many of the comments...the sound seems very close but the space it occupies is not right. The Rockman has a wide full stereo field. The amplitude sounds narrow with a disjointed echo trying to create width.

    I listened with my eyes closed and having had for years only a Rockman I can hear a difference in the original and the clone. There maybe the slight volume difference - lower in the clone - but the original sounds more full!!!! A bit more punch or roundness. I think the clone could be made more exact by upping the bottom end on it but in a one to one comparison, I'll take the original!! HOWEVER - you're right - the now $600 price tags vs. the $99 is enormous and I think the clone could be upped with EQ - maybe a bit more compression - something????? to get it to sound a bit more like the original!!!! Here's the deal with any side by side comparison, almost always you find a little difference..... Great comparison!!!!!! Thanks!!!!

    Both sound great, but, I give the edge to the AmpliTube, as the distortion is a bit tighter, and, the cleans are cleaner...but, there is definitely a bit more spacial character to the vintage rockman, when comparing them side to side. I wonder if a compressor would tighten up the rockman?

    Generally, the real one sounded the best. BUT I noticed on the distortion setting, the real one seems to have more gain and when you strum a full open chord at the end it sounded a bit too much - a little bit "yikes". Amplitube sounded fine with a nice open G chord. And you can always add more gain going into it (not sure how amplitube pedals sound going into it, or if you could just turn up your input gain, but I'm sure it's possible).
    Just one part where the AT actually sounded better to me.

Maybe with the 70 refurbished ones I have, I can flood the market and drive those who are gouging out of business.

    This is part of the buy 1 get 25 deal with group buy from IK right now. Amplitube Joe Satriani (this plug in is included from among other amps ,cabs mics,effects)is priced less that $5. Rockman x100 probably has fuller mids but a decent EQ skill can make it even closer if not at par.IMO Rockman x100 isn't worth $995 more than the plug in.

  • @ChrisM541
    @ChrisM541 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The Amplitube version is excellent but it's 100% lacking in the 'tail' / reverb setting it's using - listen to 5:15 using the Rockman and you'll instantly hear the reverb tail, but it's dialled down in the Amplitube version (the Amplitube version is less distorted/fat on this setting too, less chorus). Very easily rectified though - e.g. is the guitar input too weak for this plugin (very crucial for plugins), or, can the reverb/distortion/etc be adjusted in the plugin?
    I am a bit stunned this wasn't picked up by the IK folks since it would have been extremely/embarrassingly easy to fix - unless, of course, the issue lies with R.J. Ronquillo himself in not setting that input into the plugin from the audio interface? - you have the plugin Input Gain at the highest (+8dB) and the plugin Vol at MAX - that looks like you're struggling to optimise the input? (you do shift to -5dB Vol for the cleans).
    Irrespective, and not owning this plugin, can you adjust the reverb/distortion/chorus/delay/etc parameters?

  • @Tricknologyinc
    @Tricknologyinc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't think there's any echo on the Amplitube version. Chorus sounds mono too. Since it's software, I would check that you're not switching anything off through your rig. You must have foot switches set up for your virtual chain! Check your plug in options for signal path and pan etc
    .

    The only release by Joe Satriani that I’ve ever had a copy of is the EP *Dreaming #11.* Could anybody confirm for me if Joe plugged into a Rockman unit during the studio piece from the EP (“The Crush of Love”) or during the concert tracks? It came out between *Surfing with the Alien* and *Flying in a Blue Dream.*
    Very cool that you included the Janet Jackson riff. That song, “Black Cat“, is probably the only song she ever composed exclusively.

  • @yactabay

    I'm from back in the day and Boston's first two albums made them my all-time favorite band(Scholz). The cleans are better on the real Rockman but the other unit has better distortion while keeping the same base(not bass) sound. It has something that the real Rockman doesn't have: that grainy noise that rides piggyback on that great distortion sound the real Rockman gives. Since Boston's first two albums are more distortion than clean, this newer unit wins. You can add all the other echos, reverbs & whatever else with any one other multi-effect unit. I'm impressed but would rather find a multi-effect physical floor unit for playing live that does the early Boston sound. One unit in my backpack and good to go.

    I bought the JS bundle last year because I too went down the ROCKMAN rabbit hole. I was very happy with the AmpliTube BOSTON 100 version, especially since you have to give up a kidney to own an original X100. I even created my own using the ToneBridge app. I watched a lot of TH-cam videos to try to get the correct settings for my virtual equipment within ToneBridge and I think I have a very close version. I have a pre-and post EQ set up. Anyway one day it would be great do you have a whole rack unit. Thanks for making this video. I noticed during your demonstration of the clean 1 & clean 2channels, You had the 5DB option selected on the X100 but the MAX volume position on the B100. I’m just curious, was there a reason for that? Anyway great video. Thanks again!
