Congratulations from Brazil !
I've always known Les Reed was a wonderful singer.....now I can say the same about Barry Mason.
Most people think that this was specially written for Tom Jones. BUT in fact it was P.J.Proby who was the very first star to record this great song but for some reason P.J. was not too keen on it & he declined to have it released on vinyl so Gordon Mills, the manager of Tom at the time, grabbed it & made Tom record it totally different to P.J.'s version & it was a super hit.
Ronald Tennant Les Reed , OBE wrote the song with Gordon Mills ... arranging, playing the piano for PJ...when PJ did not want to do it Les was going to have a famous female sing it but her agent, Edie Taylor, did not
like it so Tom was with Les And Gordon wanting to do it... saying he would commit suicide if he did not get to sing it so Les made the arrangements..Gordon and Les played instruments on the demo...for the record company...the rest is history...
Les has the video on YT telling this story...
It's a pretty full-on song, musically and lyrically. I can understand singers turning it down. You need some cojones to pull it off. Enter Tom Jones ;-)
