  • The Spindle Boxes are a Montessori math material that introduce counting with tangible wooden spindles.
    The wooden spindles are introduced after the child has a solid understanding of the quantities 1-10 and recognises the corresponding numeric symbols. This is the hold's first introduction to zero.
    Another benefit to this activity, is it gets the child ready for future work with the decimal system, as 9 is the limit of the units category.

    What do you think about metal spindles?
    Of course child sized and safe.
    My thought is that the additional weight of metal help as by 9, the weight difference will be more noticeable than with wood, even hardwood. Metal is also natural material.

    • @SunshineTeachersTraining
      @SunshineTeachersTraining  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Elian... to be honest I have never seen metal spindles... but they sound great. You are so right about the weight. It would great for motor skills.

      @@SunshineTeachersTraining Thanks for answering. I haven’t seen one either, so I may build one. Thinking of 8 or 10mm square section spindles made with forging iron, which is very close to how metal exists in nature. Some sanding of edges. Also thinking in choosing and doing the section and tule of steel in some manner that the set of 9 spindles reaches 900grams. If I ever get to it I’ll let you know. Cheers

    The numbered boxes should face the learner so she learns left to right

    • @SunshineTeachersTraining
      @SunshineTeachersTraining  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for pointing out the orientation of the numbered boxes in the photo. You're absolutely correct that in Montessori practice, materials, especially those involving numbers and literacy, should typically be presented from left to right to align with the direction of reading and writing, fostering a natural learning flow for the child.
      In the video, the orientation was adjusted for the viewer's perspective to ensure clarity and understanding of the material itself. However, when implementing the spindle box activity with learners, we always encourage positioning the numbers to face the child from left to right, supporting their learning and development in line with Montessori principles.
      Your attention to detail is appreciated, and it highlights the importance of adhering to Montessori methodologies to provide the most beneficial learning experience.
