    I'm an electrician, and use my charge daily for work purposes.
    I get what you're saying regarding the replaceable cutters, I think their usefulness is going to vary depending on the person.
    I personally use the wire cutters daily, so for me, the ability to replace them as needed is much more valuable than it would be for someone who doesn't use them. In fact I actually bought 3 sets of replacement blades at the time of the Charge purchase, and so I have the ability to change them instantly, as needed, with no waiting, and have in fact done so once already.
    Value is in the eye of the beholder. :)

      Have you noticed that the gut hook on the serrated blade is great for pulling back the insulation cover of wiring?

  • @survivalofthefittest409
    @survivalofthefittest409 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You make a really fair point on those replaceable cutters, I hadn't thought about it like that before.
    Ive been so much into preparedness, that I simply bought an extra pair and put em in the sheath so I wouldn't be SOL in any particular moment, *but* it never occurred to me that I cant actually warranty that part anymore.
    Thanks for pointing out the obvious for me haha.

    One difference you didn’t mention between the Wave and Charge is that the action opening the outside tools is a lot nicer... the Wave (which I love, and currently have 3 of, and have lost two more) only has pivot washers on the ‘body’ side of the two blades, saw and file, whereas the charge tools have phosphor bronze washers on both sides of those tools. It feels like a real silly omission on the Wave, but I guess that’s one more way to differentiate it from the ‘luxury’ Charge line.
    Anyway, in the USA the price difference is currently $34 (shipped) between the Wave+ and the Charge+ and I think the upgraded blade steel is 100% worth that price, aside from any other differences.

    Replaceable wire stripper blades, good steel on the blade and a great driver with multiple bits to choose from. This is hands down one of the best multi tools on the market. Other companies sacrifice on the steel quality which makes this a winner.

    Totally worth getting the plus. Leathermans cable cutters are way to soft. Even cutting a fishhook will damage it and thats totally in line with what I would concider expected usage for us outdoorsy types. The dowside is that the replacable cutters slightly interferes with the nut-grabbing capabilities of the tool - and I know how much you lot love grabbing nuts.
    Personally, I already own a Surge and a Signal so I likely wont bother uppgrading my Charge TTi to a Plus model. And to be honest, aside from being slightly more bulky than the Wave the Surge is superior in every way. Its got proper scissors, an awl and the ability to run bosch t-shank stick saw blades to cut anything you can possibly imagine. Add beefier pliers, replacable cutters and that "bulk" is totally worth it.

    • @Heikki_Finland
      @Heikki_Finland 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Even cutting a fishhook"... You say "even", like fish hooks were soft material by default? No, got to know materials. No tool steels, no stones, no springs, no hardened stuff. Anything from copper to carbonless iron is ok. If the material is harder than the plier itself, then it results damage. Go slow testing and turn the cutted piece to cut from other sides too if it's thick or feels too hard. Consider if twisting it with the plier head would snap it in half rather than cutting action.

    • @TheKimjoh560
      @TheKimjoh560 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Heikki_Finland I explain quite plainly what I mean with "even cutting a fishing hook" and it is not a reference to hardness but rather what is common and expected usage for an outdoors oriented user. There are certainly other common materials that you'd want to cut that are to hard, like high carbon machine screws. I will also say that the vanilla pliers are not without advantage because the 154cm cutters does impair the tools ability to grab on to certain sizes of nuts, bolts and such. My interest in multitools actually derrives in part from a degree in engineering so I dont actually need the lecture :)

    Informative and Entertaining! Great point about the cutter inserts.
    I’m in the ‘it’s not worth it’ camp. Multitools are not meant to be main tools. Surely someone who needs a knife and / or pliers for harder use has those tools. If they break or get lost, then the Leatherman is there to save your 🥓.
    As you said, 50 cuts of sisal is a lot of edc tasks (and even then, it’s not so dull as to render it useless).

    I enjoy your videos. I think this is one of your best reviews by far!
    At one time, I had nearly every Leatherman Charge they ever made. Quite a few variations of the Charge Ti, XTi, TTi, AL and ALX. I had nearly 20 of them. I still have quite a few Charge’s but u agree the Wave is by far the best value. I actually think the Wave is stronger by design because you don’t have Al or Ti scales, just solid bend over steel.
    For us knife guys, the Wave is more than adequate. The knife blades on my tools and are quite literally beater blades. Premium steel isn’t necessary.

    My charge alx finally snapped the pliers, right at the crimper. I'm sad that I won't have the 2x bit holders, but excited to have Needle nose pliers with the replaceable wire cutters, as well as scissors. I feel the small inconvenience of only having one bit set loaded and ready instead of two is going to be worth the sacrifice for scissors. The flat blade was the most common bit to be in the holder anyway, and the + has one of those too. So long charge ALX! you were great to have by my side for 5 years!

    You are the first one to talk about lost strength due to those replaceable wire cutters. I recently bought a Wave and while that option was available to me, i chose to buy the older model for that reason. I know how to use tools properly and am sure i don't need to replace my wire cutters anyway. Even if the new model didn't break, who knows, it may not be as rigid in some cases when you really press and twist the pliers. Less parts = less hassle. By the way, what's up with those screws holding things together? Looks more like rivets? More trouble to diy tinkerers.

  • @UnstoppableTramp

    Good review mate. It would appear to be a charge AL with a gut hook on the serrated blade and changeable wire cutters?
    I own a charge AL and I just found out from leathermans that if my wire cutters "should" become jammed, they would replace it with one of these. Sweeeet.
    EDIT. I would say it was 100% for leatherman having the replaceable wire cutters, like you mention, no more warranty repairs for this common problem and gives them the ability to make money selling the blades but for me it is actually more convenient.
    Now I am happy in the knowledge that when I get the Charge + I will buy a couple of sets of extra wire cutters and pack them into my B.O.B altogether, in case I am away from the possibility of a warranty repair. That had been my only gripe with these tools, if you push the cutters too hard then the pliers start to stick and then fold when you try and open them up so to speak.
    You can't knock them for innovation, smart guys over there. Now if they would just improve the metal file, lose the small scissors and serrated blade and add the Surge Scissors. OH and add an awl I would be a happy man! Can't have it AWL I guess lol!
    PS Mate. Have a look at Woniya's Surge that leatherman modified for her.
    th-cam.com/video/0-Jk-rc0OLM/w-d-xo.html
    She was runner up on Season 6 survivor. That Surge is perfect for Bushcraft and gives me some serious multitool envy!

    last night i tried to cut a couch spring with my old leatherman supertool - it has the same replaceable 154cm cutters. i couldn't get through the spring because at max hand strength (and pain threshold) the spring was just too tough; only cut in 'bout .5mm on each side. anyways, the little 154cm inserts were unscathed afterward with just a barely-visible hint of surface deformation. so, there's my data point on that feature.
    don't know wtf that spring was made out of - 1075 or something? tougher than nails, whatever it was. that old supertool is not fun to squeeze down on without gloves.

    What the heck do you work with, seing compund fractures and what not? The hook-thing is one of my used features at work (foreman/engineer at a construction company) because it works great at cutting zipties that are pulled tight. When you use a knife there is always the risk of using force and pushing the knife into something you don't intend to such as metal, hands or other fragile materials. Pliers, specially the ones on the Leatherman, is hard to get close enough to cut a pulled down zipties.

    I do like the new replaceable cutters, but they aren't really as godsend as some make them to be, I've literally beat my Leatherman fuse for years and damaged the cutters multiple times so that the pliers would not close or get stuck and I've just filed the damaged part out and they work great.

The wire-cutters are not specifically excluded from the warranty, so I expect them to be replaced free of charge, under warranty, just as if anything else failed on the tool.

      Andy Richardson. Yeah, I'm a full time firefighter. Shears definitely work just fine most of the time. As far as knife blades I normally don't like to use them close to a patient, I'd go for shears or a hook, something blunted with a little more forgiveness. I haven't used the hook on this Leatherman in particular, but the Benchmade resuse hooks work well. I will say the hook on the Leatherman OHT doesn't seem to work as well as the BM ones. It comes to more of a V shape. Rounded ones work better in my experience. But everyones milage may vary.

      Mike Isaac Lansky kit. Worksharp knife and tool sharpener (mini belt sander) and Tormek.
      Search his channel and these key words. He reviews them all. Tormek is more expensive and specialised and might be harder to get. He first two are widely available.

      Mike Isaac Is recommend the Lansky Diamond kit + the stand (it’s an additional cost). You can get other extras like the strop.

    Replaceable cutters have no benefit! Wow okay. lol
    What if you use them all the time and having sharp cutters makes your job easier? Can’t send them back if you use them daily but You can easily change out the damaged ones with new ones and get back to work. I don’t think they did a redesign because they wouldn’t have to repair tools, I’m pretty sure it was requested by actual users in the field. And it just makes the tool better period.
