The Sack of Rome 1527 - As it Happened

- Nearly 500 years ago Rome experienced one of the most brutal sacks since that of the 5th century siege of Rome by the Visigoths. It was brutal, chaotic, and memorable - still today the event remains a mainstay in Italian history, popular culture and historical intrigue.
From the death of a French Duke to the last stand of the Swiss Guard, the 1527 Sack of Rome is a fascinating story of brutality and the horrors of Renaissance era warfare.

Hey everyone, some general things I should mention with this video. There are some points where I take some creative liberty with the narrative, since there doesn't really exist a moment by moment account of the Sack itself, but for the most part I try to keep to the sources I have included in the description, but even they are limited. For example, I could never really pin down the primary source for that '189 Swiss Guards' reference that is literally everywhere on the internet, even in what is supposed to be the definitive source on the sack of Rome, Ludwig Freiherr von Pastor's History of the Popes. I did find it on a defunct website run by The Vatican, however, they also neglected to mention the primary source.
Anyway, hope you liked the video - please do use this comment to let me know if you spotted anything in the video that can be sourced/clarified, and just your comments/criticisms in general!
what about your voice? you sound like you absolutely don't care about the content

What music was used in this video?
This stuff good.
It’s a crime that this video doesn’t have over a million views
oh wow! How'd you find this channel?!
Thank you for the recommendation! I have just subscribed!
@@IMPERIALYTHe’s right though, this channel is unironically amazing no matter the subject you cover, I like the style of editing and just the general structure you use between all of your videos. Please keep this up as you are willing to do so, and if you’d prefer to ever stop, just know you’ve done a great job regardless.
Views and quality have never been farther from each other on TH-cam

1.200 years later and still Aurelian's walls were the defence of Rome. The Roman legacy still echoes even after millennias
Yet only 4 000 volunteered to defend the city. Uhm, they kinda deserved to be sacked.
Same thing happaned in Constatinople. The Theodosian walls ware the main defence even tho they ware several houndred years obsolite.
@@mowtow90 They were pretty effective but no wall at the time could withstand cannon-fire.
@@TheBoobansuch an ignorant thing to say.
You're making the same mistake that the video makes - the Emperor's name was Marcus Aurelius.
Another mistake is that the Landsknechte being mainly from southern Germany, were not mainly Lutheran.
There are other mistakes, but life's too short...
Shame we don't have a movie regarding the last stand of the Swiss Guard. Id be totally happy if they took some creative liberties with it as well, to enhance the emotional factor of it. Maybe show the Guard fighting their way backwards up the steps of the Basilica. Their lines steadily shrinking while the enemy dead lay thick at their feet.
Fantastic video sir, glad I found your channel.
I will pay anything to see that movie
Then it cuts to the Pope abusing a child right?
With the state of Hollywood these days, they would probably choose Halle Berry or Zendaya to portray Captain Röist.
The movie 300: change Leonidas for Roist, Thermopilae for the Vatican and the persians for the imperials. Same ending.
I highly recommend Sabaton's "The Last Stand."

Absolutely phenomenal. I wouldn't bat an eye if this had a million views.
I would. I don't want to get bad eyesight.
Thank you - I'm glad you liked the video! Just a quick question though, assuming you've seen my previous videos - do you enjoy the more politically geared videos or the more historically geared ones?
@@IMPERIALYT I honestly enjoy both similarly, the variety is great
*looks at view count*
Well then... that's weird. If I had to bet on digits I would have lost. Only 4. Seems very high quality but I'm not very interested in prolonged descriptions of the horror of war.
@@IMPERIALYT Honestly I don't really have a preference, I enjoy both topics! But if I **had** to choose, it would probably be the political ones
My new favourite channel uploaded!!!
Masterfully made. I’m glad I’ve found this channel in its infancy!
“The soul becomes dyed with the colour of its thoughts.”
― Marcus Aurelius,
I saw this video and assumed that you had around 400K-600K subscribers. I honestly didn't expect at all what I actually saw. You and your work deserve so much more. My hope is that you become a household name in education/history/politics side of youtube.
The Sack of Rome was commemorated by oath taking of the newly recruits of Pontifical Swiss Guard every May 6 every year
Listening now in 2023, I felt a deep sorrow for the events in Rome in 1527.
This is quite honestly the best history video I have seen in a while, thanks for the great content
Extremely high quality content. Fascinating story, great storytelling and simplistic visuals, in the best way possible
don't usually comment on videos but i've only seen two videos on your channel and both of them have been amazing. super high quality and the subtitles are always on point, better than most other educational channels (i have awful hearing). your channel is super underrated!
how have I not seen this channel before? This is actually amazing
Can't wait to watch this channel grow! These videos are pure quality.
The research, animation, and story telling are absolutely copacetic. Great work!!

This just appeared in my TH-cam suggestions, found it very interesting and well produced. This deserves more views and subs.
So well made and I'm so glad I found this video!!
The way you speak is so beautiful the sense that you yourself are merely communicating fact yet when you talk for others with such passion!
Man, what a phenomenal little documentary. The animations are excellent and I really enjoyed the narration. Keep up the great work, you'll get a lot more subs than 16k if you do 😊
so happy your channel got recommended to me! you deserve to blow up and you have earned my subscription! keep it up man.

Thank you so much for this, I pride myself on knowing a little European history but completely overlooked the sacking of Rome.

Man the narrative voice is amazing! With great music hitting at the right time! This is Art! 👏🏼
Instant sub. Quality is so suprisingly and satisfyingly high.
With this staggering amount of quality in the video, its a crime that you only have 18k subscribers. Regardless, I pray for your success in your YT career because my god you deserve it.
About 30 seconds in never seen your channel before but I can tell this is a hidden gem and definitely gonna jump on the bandwagon now so I can brag I knew this channel at 2.5k when you hit a million.
Wow, this was great. I'm proud that I will soon be able to say that I was here before you blew up.
Keep it up mister, another impeccable video
I recently watched a documentary on the golden age of European silent films. I believe we are in the middle of a golden age right now of amazing TH-cam content creators such YOU. Fantastic work. Subscribed!!

thank you Battle Order for showing us this channel
INCREDIBLE. Honestly, the number of subscribers here is nowhere near what you deserve.
PS. Anyone know the music used in the video?
Absolutely brilliant video.
Sadly, despite the city surrendering in June, the Imperial Army did not depart from Rome immediately. They stayed in the city continuing their ransacking and debauched behavior until October when a wave of bubonic plague broke our into the city and decimated many of the invaders as well as the Roman citizens who had managed to survive that long. Some reports indicate that 2/3 of the invading army died alongside 25,000 civillians.
their Bad Karma came back to bite them!
Love the channel ! The storytelling is truly awesome. Out of curiosity, what software(s) do you use to edit your videos ?
Love it! Love it! Love it! Amazing to see your animation develop. More pls 💞💞

The channel is so fking rad. Keep it up, friend, you're great at this
This was amazing. Keep these war/battle episodes coming!!!!
Came back half a year later to say I'd really love to see more series like this video!
Just discovered your channel and in the midst of binging all the vidoes - absurdly well produced, leaving one here for the algo!
This was incredible to watch thank you
Some beautiful piece of content ❤️
Wonderful job! Of course the event is abhorrent, but I think you did an amazing job with the narration and graphics/animation. I particularly enjoyed the use of sources and quotes. Very professional in execution.
Absolutely Amazing Video.
After watching this I subscribed. Great video !!
Yes yes yes! Make more videos from more places like this!
As you asked for feedback, showing a more easily understood map of the city at the start of the video would have been nice, it's really hard to keep up with the geography on this one IMO, very difficult to read. Otherwise great stuff as always, can't wait for the day you'll finally go viral, if you keep this up it's inevitable!
Such an awesome video! I just subbed
I watched twice. So much information, I was focused on the visuals at first! Great great video
I agree with the many comments that this channel is far underappreciated. It has to be an exposure problem because masses will love this channel
Insane production!!!
Great video!
This video is phenomenal
the most underrated youtube channel on the platform. well made video.
Really well produced episode.
This is where language changes the context of the past..
"Anxieties" wasn't a word used back then. They would have thought you meant "melancholy."
Melancholy I think we would agree is not what those men were feeling.
They may have used a word like "excited" which wasn't used positively then as it is now.
❤
Simply outstanding. Flawless.
your channel is going to blow up
Another high quality production to place in your crown. Remember me when you hit 1 million subs x
Great video bro
Fantastic video. Instant subscriber.
Brilliant work
i love this channel, i have an idea for your next video. you should look into WW! battles there isn't a lot of channels like yours that have gone over WW1 battles it would be nice to see it in your editing style
it must be really unmotivating to have such a great video be so under appreciated.
Oooooh that gives me Kings and Generals vibes, but unique. You have a bright future ahead of you my dude
Very well made video!
the animation is insane, did you do this alone or a team? bravo👏
Amazing documentary!
