Road Trip and Range Test of the Tesla Model 3 Highland Long-Range

  • The 2024 Model 3 long-range Highland does a great job as a road tripper. Over a distance of 575 KM in a day, mostly on the highway, I realized an average consumption of 15.8 kWh per 100 KM. The long-range version is the one to choose for those of you who often travel longer distances.
    Charging a Tesla is generally a smooth undertaking. The Model 3 is no exception but the charging speed 10-80% was a bit disappointing.
    On the car’s performance in general: The seats are comfortable - it is no problem to drive for nearly three hours without a break, and the noise level at 120 km/h is very low.
    On the complaints side I noticed again that the Full Self Driving software and the cruise control has its flaws.
    The mobility insider’s conclusion: Travelling long distances in an all-electric car is very much possible, but you do have to do a little bit of pre-planning and rely on the car's navigation system to do the trip planning and pre-conditioning.
    The Model 3 in this latest 2024 long range version is excellent but not perfect. But it drives really well, it has plenty of horsepower and the efficiency of the motors and the battery is class leading.
    Thank you for watching - feel free to share the video, like and comment below, and have a look at some of my other videos.
    Filmed in Switzerland on 26th February, 2024 and produced by DNTS Productions.

    great review 👍I use the M3 24 LR since Feb and on a road trip of 347km last week, Zug - via Entlebuch - Thun to Gstaad and back via Interlaken Brünig, the car used 44kWh or 12.7 kWh/100 KM which is surprisingly low for 9C outside and winter tires, really a great car for a mountain country like Switzerland, the only thing that could do with a serious upgrade are the wipers ☔

    Another great no fluff review, the phantom braking beyond being annoying is a potential safety issue depending on other vehicles around the car

    I have the same problem with my 2019 Model 3 LR on cruise control, to many phantom brakes and FSD it's not worth the money in Europe yet.
    Just did 9k km in the last 6 weeks with the car and never had range anxiety what so ever.

    Thanks for sharing you experience with the new Tesla model 3.
    I have two questions:
    1- There are two rim sizes available, 18 and 19 inches. I noticed that your car had 18 inch rims which offers a bit longer range. I was wondering which rim size is better? I suppose 19-inch offers a better handling at the cost of range and stiffer drive. But is it really worth it?
    2- How difficult is indicating using buttons on the steering wheel? For example when you're in a roundabout and want to indicate to exit or something like that.

    • @morten_hannesbo
      @morten_hannesbo  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, I'd assume the 19" would be fine for comfort, too, but the 19" should give marginally better handling. I have only driven the Model 3 Highland with the 18" winter tyres, so cannot compare. I did test the Model Y 2023 model with 19" summer tyres and the ride was a bit hard. But do remember that they are quite different; Model Y for Europe is produced in Berlin and Model 3 is produced in Shanghai.
      The indicator buttons on the steering wheel are not ideal, I hate them but could live with them.

    Two questions: 1. Are you planning on doing “in car” reviews too? Not only static 2. What was your opinion on this years GIMS?

    • @morten_hannesbo
      @morten_hannesbo  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, my channel has several in car reviews, and the review of the M3 LR will follow ca. in 8 days. I found GIMS a bit disappointing. Yet 1700 media reps visited and a total of 163000 visitors is ok. I hope next year many more manufacturers will return.

    Please could you mention why?

    • @morten_hannesbo
      @morten_hannesbo  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Simply because of the better range and the higher power. For mountain driving the 4x4 is an advantage too.

      Hej, se min test af SR her: th-cam.com/video/szE3XbkPHtQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=uf774lr962FLdyhU
      SR batteriet er på 61 kWh (-15 kWh) men forbruget er lidt mindre pga lavere effekt og lavere vægt. Hvis du ikke har brug for 4x4 så er SR det rigtige valg.

    I really want a Tesla Model 3 Highland but the 475 kms range is still too low.
    I can easily "charge" my TDI for 1100kms in 5 minutes and I can do so every 5-10kms or maximum every 20 kms.
    That means that, if I do 80-90kms per work day, it's 2 visits to the petrol station. TWICE PER MONTH doing less than 2000kms per month. With a Tesla that's at least 5 visits of 25-30 minutes instead of 2 of 5 minutes. 2.5 hours vs 10 minutes. Per month.
    Charging it at home is not for everyone, I live in a flat and there is not a single charging station 5kms around where I live.
    Range is not enough, too many visits to charge it.

  • @voldar70

    Nice video but there are things that I don't understand : you said you drove 435 km on 94% battery (3:09) then you explain that from 10% to 80% it took you 33 mins. Isn't more real to say the charge was 33 mins for 6% to 80% ? You drove then 140 km more for 575 km in total (4:07). Why would you charge to 80% when all you need to cover was 1/3 of the distance you covered on full charge ? A short charge of 10-15 minutes to get enough energy for the 140 km would have been enough. And it is more in line with the real experience of driving a Tesla over 575 km.

    • @morten_hannesbo
      @morten_hannesbo  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Voldar70, thank you for watching. As I only had the Tesla for a few days and I wanted to do the 10-80% charge test (which I do for all cars that I test on my channel Mobility Insider), I decided to do charge 10-80% on the way back from Geneva. But you are right; It would have been faster to just charge 10 minutes and then continue and then charge at home.
      The total charging time was 35m10s so I timed it from 10% onwards. The characteristics of the charging curve of the Model 3 LR is very fast in the beginning (upto 250 kW) and then it drops off fast. Overall fine, just do not charge beyond 45% or 50% if you are in a hurry.

    • @voldar70
      @voldar70 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@morten_hannesbo Thank you for the quick answer. I understand now the reason.
      And yes, at 15.8 kWh/100 km efficiency, 50-55% of the battery is enough for driving 200-250 km and stop for charging another 10-15 minutes and repeat. Charging to 80% is needed only if there is no other possibility to stop earlier.
      And after 2 - 2.5 hours of driving, I usually need a break. Driving 4,5 hours is too much for me and I think for most people.

    • @morten_hannesbo
      @morten_hannesbo  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Generally I would charge to 100% at home with the AC charger as Tesla does not recommend anything different.

    • @ekjellgren
      @ekjellgren หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@morten_hannesbo To me they say 80%.. and the SR should be able to do 100% without degradation due to that battery type.

    • @morten_hannesbo
      @morten_hannesbo  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ekjellgren The Tesla Model 3 RWD’s battery pack uses the LFP chemistry which Tesla recommends charging to 100% at least once per week. Tesla recommends setting the charge limit to 100% for daily use.
      The Tesla Model 3 Long Range and Performance variants uses a different chemistry referred to as NMC. The Tesla Model Y owner's manual recommends setting the charge limit to 90% for daily use. This will minimise degradation and preserve the longevity of the battery.
      Occasional charging of the battery to 100% to maximise the car's range for longer trips and should not cause significant degradation of the battery.
      Home slow-charging to 100% should not cause degradation either.

    Are you sure about 600+ range?

    • @morten_hannesbo
      @morten_hannesbo  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, thx for watching. A real life range of 600 km is definately possible - in spring weather (15-20° C) you will get a consumption of 12-13 kWh/100 km if you keep your speed at 90-110 km/h, and even with 120-130 km/h you will get a consumption of 14-15 kWh/100 km. It is one of the most economical cars out there.
