Johann Sebastian Bach wrote Cantata 29 in 1731, by which time he was working in Leipzig and at the height of his career. Although there is a reference to "Gott" (God) in the title (and the work is based on sacred text), this is not actually a church cantata - that is, it was not written for a specific liturgical feast. But the work is a sacred cantata, written for a service at the Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas Church) accompanying the “Ratswechsel” - the annual inauguration of a new town council on the 27th of August of that year.
The cantata is one of few sacred cantatas written by Bach which opens with an orchestral sinfonia. Who knows what Bach’s motivation was behind this Sinfonia (convenience, musical appropriateness, or simply a looming deadline?) but the opening music the citizens of Leipzig heard that day (and again in 1739 and 1749) had existed in another form for over a decade, as the prelude to Violin Partita No. 3 in E (BWV 1006), written during Bach's earlier Cöthen period. Bach had already revised this for organ and strings in 1729 for the “wedding” cantata “Herr Gott, Beherrscher aller Dinge” (BWV 120a).
Bach sometimes reused an earlier composition, typically revising and improving it in a process called “parody” - the reworking of one kind of composition into another. Transposing the work from E major down a step to D major, Bach transformed the prelude and created a joyous orchestral setting befitting the ceremonial pomp of the occasion. The obbligato (solo) organ plays the original virtuoso violin part, while the lavishly written ensemble (3 trumpets, two oboes, strings, continuo and timpani) imitates the material to produce a concerto-like structure. Today, this ceremonial sinfonia is often performed by solo organ (notably by organist Diane Bish).
I decided to revisit this piece because it’s my favourite and looking back, there were things in my 2017 post that I wanted to improve upon. I modified and/or created brand new voicing for this project, having gained more experience in sound development with my VST synths. I wanted this new interpretation to get closer in sound to Carlos’ original version than in my previous 2 posts. Though my timbres may seem reminiscent, I’ve given the work a broader, brighter stereo treatment than Carlos’ more simplistic audio vista.
This is probably the most important piece of music to me (and is my ultimate favourite Baroque composition). The work presented here, is my sincere homage to Wendy Carlos, whose 1969 Grammy Award winning "Switched-On Bach" was the album that sparked my interest in Classical music. It inspired me to study piano, explore music through its eras, and later on, lead me to synthesizers and digital sound development.
Here is Bach's famous Sinfonia to Cantata No. 29, "Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir" (We thank you, God, we thank you). As always, the use of headphones will greatly enhance the listening experience.
For those wanting to follow the music, the MAMM Player Visualization colours are as follows:
Organ (R.H.) - Orange (top line)
Trumpets I, II & III -Yellow/Lime Green/Green (intermittent over Oboes)
    Oboe I - Cyan (2nd line)
Oboe II - Blue (3rd line)
    Bassoon - Violet (4th line)
Cello - Fuchsia (2nd last line)
    Double-bass - Pink (bottom line)
Timpani - Red (intermittent over Cello)
As always, the use of headphones will greatly enhance the listening experience.

Here's my latest and possibly my last musical contribution. Sadly I have encountered auditory deficits and it's becoming more difficult to develop new work. In order to produce and finalize this piece, beyond the sound development, I had to rely on software metering and audio cues, and most importantly - the ears of others - who were able to assist me with track level and spatial adjustments. Without their meaningful suggestions, I wouldn't have been able to post this. Special thanks to Jagan Nath and Geopholus; I couldn't have done it without you!

Thanks for creating this. Wendy Carlos's 1968 synthesis of this piece as part of "Switched On Bach" sparked my discovery and love of classical music. Your synthesis definitely evokes hers of so many years ago.

@@philschwarz7233 Thank you very much listening and taking the time to comment. I too was influenced by Carlos' ground-breaking work and I wanted to create something even more reminiscent than my previous versions. From yours and others comments, it would seem that I've done something right. I truly appreciate your feedback.

It's a small group of people here on TH-cam, people who make and listen to this kind of music, you are one of the most active, whose work is beloved, and as usual this piece is beautiful. I'm sorry to hear about your affliction, I'm no spring chicken myself and my hearing has become dull, the thought terrifies me a little.

wonderful to watch and hear. i really like your visualization if bach's works; the clarity of his musical ideas is well represented in the complexity of your dots and lines. fabulous and i really hope to see more, if possible.

Carey, thanks for revisiting this immortal work. The use of filtered white noise in the right hand imitates an organ flue registration freshly from the Carlos SOB version. While I don't think Carlos had use of asymmetrical rectangle waves on the modular Moog, I did enjoy the fatness that you employed in your earlier rendition of the pedal part, deviating just a bit from Carlos' analog square wave. I will enjoy both versions, along with fond revisits to Switched-on Bach.

    And originally for the *violin*
    Wow.
For the Cantata, imagine going along to a staid, serious Lutheran Church and hearing the orchestral version.
Makes you wonder what the good Burghers thought of "this Kapellmeister, Bach".
(Would have *loved* to have been there...)

Carey, I believe you could sit your butt on the keyboard and bounce around, and it would still sound good - especially to your devoted followers here. This work is amazing, despite your challenges, and I know I am among many in my gratitude and appreciation. I'm sure your helpers will continue to support you, and if you need one more I'm right here.
I hope you continue to fight, just like ol' Ludwig van did. You and your work are a gift to music an music lovers, friend.

Love your work, Sir, and am a bit sad that this is to be your last realization!!
I'm a devout atheist, but it is so clear to hear Bach's devotion to God in his music and this piece, in particular, is an illustration of this.....along with masses...no pun intended....of other pieces.
I think it was Carl Sagan, when being asked why there weren't more pieces of Bach on the Golden Record on Voyager 1 for any prospective aliens, who quipped:
"That would be just showing off"

Thank you for your thoughtful comment Pookleberry. I hope it won't be my last post... I have some old projects that I'd never completed. With the help of some friends guiding me, I still might be able to finish a few more. I'm hopeful that a hearing aid (if indeed feasible) could allow me to continue on.

I appreciate your comment. Until I can see a specialist I won’t know what the possibilities are, however, for the time being I’ve lost all the mid-range and lower frequencies in my left ear and certain wave types/frequencies sound sour to me. I’m hopeful for some kind of correction. For now, I’m very limited to revive old work where I know how things once sounded. My output has started to dwindle for now but I’m still hopeful to upload a few more posts in the months to come.

Carey, I am so dismayed to hear of your hearing decline. Have you gotten a definitive diagnosis from the doctor? I am dealing with tinnitus as a complication of type two diabetes, and have been supplementing my diet with Selenium, vitamin E, Coenzyme Q-10 and Ginkgo Biloba, per recommendations from a couple of well-known naturopathic practitioners.

I suspect your ears of others listened on very good stereo systems & probably had headphones - but by the time it gets to a lone and wimpy PC speaker the base is inaudible.
