I’m a 58 year old US Army Cold War era Veteran, grew up listening to Classic Rock and Heavy Metal, I discovered the HU about 4 years ago and absolutely love them. Alot of people already commented on the band, where they’re from, and even the instruments names. So I’ll just give you some info I found out about the song itself and the 2 stringed instrument called a Morin Khuur.
The Wolf Totem is actually part of a 12th Century “poem” written by one of Chinggis Khaan’s (Ghengis Khaan is what westerners have called him) sons, that the HU put to music.
The Morin Khuur (Horsehead fiddle) when traditionally made has 2 “strings” that are actually made from the tail hairs from a horse, traditionally the hairs come from the player’s own horse to “bind” the instrument and player. The “male” (thicker) “string” has 150 hairs, the “female” (thinner) “string” has 130 hairs, and (from what I’ve read) the sign of a Master Morin Khuur player is they can mimic the neigh and/or whinny of a horse, and falcon cries with it.
The Mongolian throat singing (when I first heard it watching this video my first time) blew me away, due to the fact that I can do it myself, not knowing it was Mongolian throat singing. As a child on a tv program we watched about Australia, there was an instrument that made a “droning” sound very similar to the Mongolian throat singing called a “digerydoo”. I loved the sound of it and tried to mimic the sound with my mouth and throat, eventually I got it down and was able to do it, never knowing that I taught myself how to do Mongolian throat singing, or at least part of it because there are 3. “styles” of Mongolian throat singing. The style in this video is what I can do and is called Kargyraa

welcome to the world of folk metal we have everything from Mongolian throat singing to African traditional music you can headband to
Here's my list of folk metal bands that spans all inhabited continents
    Diablo Huma- Equador
    Hiddenland- Equador
    Cemican- Mexico
MiracleOfSound-Ireland (look up his songs Sirona, Grainn Mahoil and Tale of Cu Chullain)
Alestorm- Scotland (it's pirate metal but some people count it?)
    Tyr- Faroe Islands
    Percival- Poland/ Pan slavic

    Mägo de Oz-Spain
Po' Metra Crijeva- Croatia (the band name means half a meter of guts)
    Manntra-Croatia
Brkovi- Croatia (more of a punk band but look up their song "Ovce" a MAGICAL blend of rap, metal a, punk and folk influences)
Metaklapa- Croatia (This one is weird ... they do covers of metal songs in traditional Dalmatian singing style .. for example they did Aces high)
Dubioza Kolektiv- Bosnia & Hertzegovina (DO NOTE! This band is called a band with no genre for a reason! they varry from Regge R&B To Folk-Metal-Punk ... compare their "Space song" and "No escape from Balkans")

(also worth of note is Skinflint from Botswana but they don't ussualy have much folk elements)
Al-Namrood- Saudi Arabia (They played metal when it was punishable by death... IT DON'T GET MORE HARDCORE THAN THAT!)
Hassak- Kazakhstan (it's an ethno band but listen to their song Amanat and tell me it don't belong on a metal concert)

    Wagakki band- Japan
    Nini music- Taiwan

Loved your reaction and comments you two. Here’s some stuff I read. Mongolia is the most sparsely populated country. 30% of the people are nomadic. It was never conquered. Genghis Kahn and company took over more territory than anyone ever. They were bloodthirsty killers but they brought relative peace and order to a savage world. If you joined them their reputation protected you regardless of your religion, beliefs, etc. If not, you died. The president of Mongolia was one of the bikers. 😊

In 2019, an NPR story put a spotlight on “a band from Mongolia that blends the screaming guitars of heavy metal and traditional Mongolian guttural singing,” accurately highlighting the cultural importance and unique musical identity of THE HU. Founded in 2016 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, THE HU, Gala, Jaya, Temka, and Enkush, are a modern rock group rooted in the tradition of their homeland. The band’s two most popular videos, “Yuve Yuve” and “Wolf Totem,” were produced by the band’s producer Dashka. The band’s name translates to the Mongolian root word for human being, and their unique approach blends instruments like the Morin Khuur (horsehead fiddle), Tovshuur (Mongolian guitar), Tumur Khuur (jaw harp) and throat singing withcontemporary sounds, creating a unique sonic profile that they call “Hunnu Rock.”

The HU is pronounced like the word who, as you can hear them chanting. Apparently it means humans or people in Mongolian. They are a rock band using throat singing and traditional Mongolian instruments, notably the horse head fiddle which has two strings and often plays sound that sound like a horse. That's called a morin khuur. The other stringed instrument on this has been specially made to resemble a bow and arrow. This was the first thing I saw from them but there are many other titles. All very impressive. They only sing in Mongolian. The English translation to this can be found online. It's basically saying if you attack us we will do this, and this, to fight back. Another song I like is Yuve Yuve Yu. and another is the acoustic version of Shireg Shireg. In that one you can see them actually in the recording studio which makes it more interesting. I am British, living in England and am a great grandmother who still enjoys metal rock and many other types of music.

hope, you have fun diving more into The HU. One thing that almost nobody's mentioning: the rider in front is wearing traditional Mongol armour (Dschingis Khan and his horde) and a horse-hair "flag" that was used to signal the parts of the mongol army. The song describes the way the mongol army was structured: 10 men, into 100men, into 1000 men, into 10 000 men.
The horse he rides is a native Mongolian horse (they still live outdoors on the mongolian steppes 365 days through all weather, half-wild and having to be caught with a pole and rope), one of the remaining gaited breeds in Europe. Horse riding and horse racing are still traditional and loved sports in Mongolia and the longest distance race (The Mongol Derby over 620 miles/1000 kilometers) is ridden there every year.

Wolf Totem is my favorite Hu song, powerful shamanic music combined with throat singing-traditional mongolian chant, mongolian instruments, a perfect blend of history and modern day, Gengis Khan was a hero to the Mongolians, highly revered and respected as a true leader and courageous warrior.

The Hu means The People, the Mongolian Nation. The horseman flies the Black Banner of War of Gengis Khan's dreaded armies. His totem was the wolf. They are one, the warrior and his war horse. Metal horses replaced real ones, but the ancient battle song is still remembered!

They are a great folk metal band and listening to them made me look into more folk metal. From Japan there is Wagakki Band, which is more than just folk metal. From Siberia there is a group called Otyken. From India there is a group called Bloodywood. And there are some individual artists who use traditional music from their heritage, like Ni Ni Music from Taiwan and Moyun and Jingxuan from China. They are all tremendous artists that i think you would enjoy.
And if you like this song by the HU Band you should check out this video, "Biyelgee Flash Mob 2019/The HU - Wolf Totem/". It is over 100 dancers performing a traditional Mongolian dance (biyelgee) in the central square of Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia. They do it to the strains of "Wolf Totem". There is a lot of amazing coordination.
