Eating 35 year Old US MRE Beef Stew Vintage Meal Ready to Eat Taste Testing Review

  • This preserved 1st generation MRE was a real treat! Stored in perfect conditions underground, it was sealed in time. A meal to remember, featuring the Cherry Nut Cake, a highly coveted dessert and one of my personal favorites, and that Beef Stew being quite different than the modern version (and much better back then in terms of quality), freeze dried fruit, and those much loved salted crackers. The best thing I ate all month!

There's a gamer named Pikasprey who does the same thing with his discussion and gameplay videos. All he does at the end is thank you for watching and bids you a good night. But the best part is, he actively rips on people who DO beg for likes and subscriptions and all the thumbnail clickbaiting tricks they do.

Oh My Goodness, this takes me back. I so remember this MRE. Story: I was in a Army Reserve unit that it seems no one had been in the old Army, the Coffee Army. It was a Texas unit that would do their two weeks in Texarkana in the summer, in the heat and humidity. At lunch, I noticed no one used the coffee from their MREs. They would give them to me when I asked. I then showed them how to make an iced coffee with the cocoa. You take two coffee packets, one cocoa milk chocolate mix, stir it in a wee bit of hot water, maybe a third of a canteen cup. Then fill the cup with ice (yes, we had ice), pour in water to cover and stir. Iced coffee! They were amazed! A refreshing coffee drink in 110 degree weather.
And I miss those little bottles of Tabasco sauce that came in the MREs.
    Good Times

The dried pears and maple nut cakes were my favorite. People talk smack about the original 'dirty dozen' MREs but that's mainly because the entrees were mostly terrible. The freeze dried fruit and the nut cakes made it feel like they put together a real meal, not just grabbed junk food off the shelves at a 7-11 and threw it into a tan bag. And thankfully they updated the entrees before we had to eat them for months on end in the desert. Dehydrated pork patties would have been death.

I seriously think Steve would make an awesome food critic. He is so suited to it the way he describes every component of the food.

**decides to anyways, against his better judgement**
**concludes it best not be said after all...**
Alls I'll say, it involved the terms "after" and "birth" 🥴 (I'm still going to hell for this lmao)

I recall when a friend in the National Guard shared an MRE with us in our college dorm in 1987. He made us the hot chocolate + coffee creamer icing for the fruitcake. I liked the freeze dried fruit.

When I was in the US Army back in 1966, this was my favorite MRE. The peanut butter was better then also.

My neighbour gave me one of those when I was a kid. I believe he was in the Marines. The only things I can remember about it was the main pouch had some kind of tomato sauce in it, and then the matches, which I just gave to my mom because I was a good boy. I guess that must have been about 1987.

Steve, that brings back my best cold war childhood memories! In 1986, when I was seven years old there was an US ADA-unit here in my village in Germany during the REFORGER-Exercise. We children played and had fun with the american soldiers and were allowed to stay with them in the field kitchen. They gave us exactly this type of MRE and also boxes of grape jelly, peanut butter, cocoa and grape baverage powder and cyalume chem lights. Boy, we were so proud and happy! Seeing that video brings back the sweet smell and taste of the cocoa, of this delicious fruit mix and especially that amazing cherry nut cake! It is as it was yesterday. And from that time for us kids the United States tasted like grape jelly on peanut butter, warm cocoa, grape drinks and with these chem lights we felt like yedi knights from star wars! And still today, when I have the opportunity to buy it, then I get some Cool Aid Grape to bring back these memories!
Thank you very much for that video!

I was there in Germany from 86-89! Some of the best times of my life happened while I was stationed there in Friedburg! The German people were great! I'm glad that you have good memories of those times as well! I was in a tank unit and it always pained me to see some of the damage as we passed through towns on Reforger, and other field exercises!
