This is one of best examples of good procurements since Independence.
This was large volumes order that justified investing in local manufacturing. There are long term maintenance contracts that allows for onshoring/local manufacturing of spares. It leverages local industries in the supply chain (or will).
Now look at how the Army orders - Army orders 50 M4 APCs with no indication for future orders and then expects local production. How do you expect local productions when you order so little while paying so little?
Guess what happened, Kalyani imported M4 as CKD kits and assembled them locally.

The C295 already exists, it was developed and manufactured by Spanish CASA in the 90s before Airbus acquired the company. It is currently produced in Spain, at the CASA/AIRBUS factory in Seville. Only in India, as part of a concession to the country for the purchase of 56 units, 40 units will be produced by TATA under license of CASA/AIRBUS, to help develop the aeronautic sector there (16 are being delivered directly from the manufacturing facilities en Spain). This means that TATA will produce it only for the Indian market and cannot sell it to anywhere else in the world.

I am not fan of privatization, but this move good, since hal already has its hands full so if they get this order it will delayed, this will increase competition so hal will be forced to meet target, mixed economy of private public sector is the best thing for any country

public sector want a pie than it should compete rather than taking for granted which basically kill every thing from innovative ideas to technology

This happened because Guj Govt provided incentives...... Maha or Any other state govt never approached Tata for it ........
Also FYI, Maharashtra Govt (Under MVA) approached Foxconn CEO when he was in India for discussions of Setting up SMC Fabs, As I am from UP, I felt sad that UP Govt didn't approach him....... It's just the will power of that govt,

The success of such ventures is volume. Our Defence and HAL have to give orders and The later has to offload its demand for better quality and exports.

Kudos to The print for such programmes.
My take. For any big economy to sustain over long periods a robust indigenous Defence industry is essential. Simply put, the money (dollars?) does not go out, better management of balance of trade, money goes into local econmy creating jobs and increasing GDP and above all self reliance…..
Tailpiece: Having a robust Defence manufacturing sector is like eating the cake and having too.

SG, as important as the first private sector entry for transport aircraft might be, please don’t discount the interstate politics as “some would win, some would lose”.
The problem isn’t one project but rather the frightening trend which has started to emerge: “are all states equal in the eyes of the centre, or some states more equal than others?”. States should be competing with one another, but on the basis of merit rather than appeasement and pressure politics from higher above.
