Very good video, but this blue Volvo has many more salvageable parts, like trunk lid, doors, seats, interior, hood, stereo system or the engine. In Austria, we have special hydraulic ramps, to lift the car up. Then our scrapyard owners, can remove engines, transmissions, catalytic converters and exhausts. The leftovers of the clunker, is stored at the backyard, for customers to buy cheap parts, like master cylinders, throttle position sensors, or a matching car computer.
Some yards set the car out and let it get picked over for parts and others just crush them for the metal depending what kind of a yard it is. I would have crushed it with all the parts on it too. It depends which market you are in. Sometimes salvaging parts and waiting a round to find buyers makes no sense.
Agreed. At the very least, ALL fluids should be drained, cats, engines, gearboxes and radiators removed. Re-use is the best form of recycling so the more that can be removed from the vehicle the better. Especially rare stuff like switches and interior parts which are rarely if ever saved.
That gas removal process is a disaster waiting to happen. Also they should've removed the coolant and the windshield washer fluid before crushing. An impact wrench for tire removal. Better tools for battery removal. All in all, too disjointed process and all of it looks like an afterthought.
Waste of parts, waste of time, waste of money. No actual crusher? Just the prehistoric claw? Too bad it's not a U-Pull-It lot, but what do I know? Good and informative video, though, I did learn a few things.
I love watching these videos and viewing the comment section. Every one has their opinion, but there's always that ONE GUY who knows more than the business owner... Please sir, explain why this is a waste of time, and money? "Pre-historc claw" lol that's a $110,000 La Bounty rotating shear, which is top of the line. And also, he's using what looks to be a Colmar car baler ($280,000 machine) if I'm not mistaken which can bale a whole car down to a 3'x3'x60" footprint. MUCH smaller size than a crusher, which means you can load more payload on a truck. So at today's market price, he paid roughly $210 for that cars scrap weight value. Made his money back as soon as he cut out the cat... Not to mention pulling the tires and battery for resale, ripping out engine block and trans more dirty aluminum, and also the radiator. He more than doubled his initial investment within maybe 3 hours?? Yes... Complete waste of time... Idiot.
Still don't get why the parts are not sold. I'm sure there are volvo owners in need of panels, electronic components, lights bumpers, switches motors engines etc. Madness hoe much unnecessary waste
It looks like the former owner washed and waxed the Volvo before selling it to the scrap yard. Don't worry about the used parts folks. Usually a car stays at the wrecking yard for a set length of time, then it is scrapped. If parts are sold off of the car, so much the better, but the wrecking yard makes its money on the purchase. They buy it for less than scrap value, and so they know that they will make money on it. There are exceptions. These are cars that parts are in high demand for top dollar. The other possibility is that this is strictly a scrap metal company. It does not matter to them whether the metal is in the form of a washing machine, car, or air conditioning ducting, it is all just metal. They don't sell any parts, only metal.
Scrap metal companies should be legally prohibited from accepting vehicles (unless in the form of crushed vehicular remains) that have had all the parts removed & are just empty bodies .
@@ANDREWLEONARDSMITH Well, if you consider that the scrap yards are in competition with junk yards (dismantlers) for cars, it benefits the people who own junk cars by keeping the price of junk cars up. The parts business is all about demand. 20+ year old Honda Civic parts, particularly body parts, are in much higher demand than something like similar age Hyundai Accent or Ford Aerostar parts. Back in the 1980's I parted out a '72 Peugeot 504 sedan. The engine and transmission had been removed by the previous owner. I took the front fenders, hood and grill off, along with the doors. I saved the small parts that I wanted for my car, took the body to the scrap yard, and advertised the rest for sale. I got no calls, and all of the sheet metal was absolutely rust free. I wound up having to take those parts to the scrap yard. There was just no demand for Peugeot parts, and Peugeots were still being sold new in the US.
I hate american culture. People live above their means and throw away vehicles that can be perfectly repaired and keep running. Disturbing and yet I am not suprised
Why don't they take the parts out of the car so they can salvage and sell them rather than just ripping out the engine and bringing the car straight to the baler? To me that's a waste.
I hate watching this! So many parts on these cars could have been saved. like one of my friends have one of those Volvo’s and his taillight is cracked and this car had perfect taillights until you crushed it
These cars stay in the lot for a certain amount time, and if no one is getting the parts from it, or it is all used upped, then it goes to the crusher.
The whole car actually looked to be in great shape. Look at the rotors, the car was driven very recently. The scrapyard probably got it cheap at auction and they make money moving metal. Sad, and they are wrong, catalytic converters cannot legally be resold, only scrapped.
Sad thing is, that probably would've been a nice car for some of those people working there that are likely paid next to nothing...Im willing to bet that Volvo was nicer than the crap the employees drive by a country mile. Its crazy when I go to the junkyard and see that most of the inventory is NOT JUNK but simply older cars which these big corporate scrappers buy at auction for pennies on the dollar. Think about that next time you complain about how high used car prices are, most of these cars have NOTHING WRONG WITH THEM, Other than being older. Think about how little these yards pay for a car when scrap price is so so low...and then think how MUCH a dealer asks for a car (who knows this car may have been for sale but nobody wanted to pay the inflated price so off to auction it went) I wonder if the guy who traded that volvo in knew it was just gonna get scrapped, it looked very well cared for. Reminds me of that scene from National Lampoon Vacation where they crushed his car at the dealership..:( Seriously, such a waste. Not only because something thats perfectly good is being scrapped, but also the asinine way they are preparing it to be scrapped. For example, they could cut the cat off while car is on lift and also prepare engine for removal. Its sad that all that coolant and washer fluid just ends up in the ground to contaminate groundwater, these people are only concerned with reclaiming fluids they will be able to use.
A crying shame. That Volvo was scrapped completely intact- when it should have scrapped as a picked over hulk. Many, many very nice parts. Probably rotted out on the bottom, though. Probably should've gone to A-1 or Community Auto before it was taken to Lincoln. What's also shameful is that Volvo was nicer than my 21 year old Saturn. Such is life.
Most Volvo’s I know last easily 40 years and/or 400.000 miles.....safely,reliably,in good condition....and stil a joy to drive!!!....scrapping a car like this doesn’t make sense....
Its not a waste, these cars stay in the lot for a good amount of time. Its not their fault that no one got parts off of it, also its the owners fault for giving their car to them, if its in a scrapyard, it will die in the scrapyard.

I would not work in that yard no safety what's so ever just utter cow boys don't know how to run & operate a scrap business.. just hope in the year of making this video no one has been injured & the yard has improved..
I think the fella removing the battery needed a bigger wrench...lol
Prehistoric way of recycling cars...
If they do it like that here in the Netherlands the company gets huge problems .

It's a scrap yard
That Volvo looked in better condition than most of my cars !
How do you expect people to work with power tools and heavy machinery in a mud pit like that? Disgusting and unsafe

Yard needs a whole lot more concrete and a whole lot mess mud.
That gas removal process is a disaster waiting to happen. Also they should've removed the coolant and the windshield washer fluid before crushing. An impact wrench for tire removal. Better tools for battery removal. All in all, too disjointed process and all of it looks like an afterthought.

It's rather ironic that there wasn't any type of Lincoln in the yard at all.
