  • After 18 yrs of sitting, these carbs had no intention of flowing any fuel. After a few setbacks, we were able to get the Honda Fireblade running again! And a few peaks at my paint and bodywork.

    Would have been really helpful if you shown in the video how you put the carbs back together after separating them. The damn springs inbetween each throttle shaft is an absolute nightmare to try to do and now I wish I never took these damn things apart. For some reason no one in the country works on them either or carries any parts.

    You can disconnect/reconnect fuel lines with the tank mounted on bike. It might be easier than holding the tank while you do it

    Good job.. Was hoping for a final assembly and ride, but I’m sure it went just fine. I avoid Chinese copies of any parts.. I needed a replacement radiator for my ‘99 RRX as I had a split core and was tempted by the cheap new Chinese radiators on eBay.....until I read stories of them not fitting right, leaking and rotting quickly. Fortunately, I found a good condition oe replacement.

    Nice video. I'm waiting for my battery and some Fuel system cleaner to get my CBR-RR 400 running that I just bought. I hope I don't have to take the carbs apart. I'm going to try Forté moto 1 to clean my tank and carbs. Let it soak a couple days. And pray it dissolved/mixed all the dried up gasoline tar and stuff with the new gas so it will just burn off. No rust inside my tank luckely, just dried up goo smelling like old paint :P
    I cannot wait to clean it out and test the easy way, if it does not work. I can always take it apart :)

    Picked up a 99 cbr 600, was sitting for few years. Carbs are all gummed up. Won't start, not getting any fuel. Pulled off the carbs, but can't separate them. They are stuck together. Took everything off of them but can't get the pieces between the carbs. Can i soak the whole thing in carb cleaner?

    • @CrankAddict
      @CrankAddict  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not recommended as you will destroy some internal stuff (anything plastic or rubber probably). But you do what you have to do to get it apart. It may be easier to buy some good used carbs off ebay.
      Good luck.

      @@CrankAddict thanks.
      Just spent all day trying to clean it out. Stuck hoses on the brass piece inside the float bowl area that connects to the choke valves and sprayed carb cleaner inside to let them soak. They stayed filled, i even tried blowing a little air through them to force it. I had no luck. I couldn't separate the carbs to take it all apart. I unbolted the two long peices that holds them together, the four nuts came off but the two studs were stuck. So i put the four nuts back on a few threads and tapped them back and forth to free it up. After shifting it back and forth for few times and spraying penetrating spray on it i was able to get a skinnier shaft to tap the stud out after i took the nut off. I did that to the other stud and got it out, but then i was left with the carbs stuck together. I tried prying them apart gently from the center to at least separat the two pairs, but had no luck. I even tried banging them apart with a piece of 2x4 wood that i had extra in my garage, no luck..
      I was getting closer and closer to get on the phone and call a local shop to see how much they would charge me.
      But first, i had one more idea. I remembered i had some really thin wire, so i grabbed a piece and started from the float bowl area. At first i wasn't able to even get it started, but after spinning/ twisting the wire back and forth it started penetrating. I was able to spray carb cleaner and use the wire and then attached the rubber hose back on to spray carb cleaner in it to soak.....
      My bad for the long rant, but this bike was starting to give me a headache.
      So finally after letting it soak with the help of a rubber hose to just be able to focus on the choke passage way that was severely clogged with gummed up gas, i think, i started blowing on the tube to attempt to force the carb spray through the choke passage, i was using aquarium airline tubing that was clear so i can see through it, then i saw a little bubble.
      And then another and another after that. So i blew more air, sprayed more carb cleaner.
      Did that a few times and then looked where the choke valves seat, Dark green stuff started coming out.
      So i threw back in the two studs that i removed, twisted back on the nuts, and tightened them back on with my wrench. After slowly flowing couple sprays of carb cleaner through the air line, i cleaned up the rest of the carb and started putting it back together.
      Attached all the hoses from the carbs to the bike, along with the throttle cables and choke.
      Lubed up the four intake tube ends with a little oil and pushed the carbs back on the bike, that oil really helped. The last two times i had to get a 2x4 piece and my baby sledge to get them back on. Lol
      Connected the battery, and after a few attempts to start with the choke on i got a few sputters, then a couple backfires.
      I FINALLY got it started.
      Attached a longer fuel line to the fuel filter and put on a funnel.
      I kept pouring clean fuel into the funnel after i got it to idle by itself.
      Got it up to temp, then ran out the rest of the fuel out the line.
      Started getting dark, so I'll be back on it tomorrow. 👍👍

    Who smashed the inlet air funnels? They look beaten on carbs 1 & 2 & 3. 3 looks like the Hulk attacked it. Also, when removing the float bowl screws, use an impact driver (in reverse) and it works a treat. (Not an impact wrench!) And, now you should vacuum sync the carbs - since you did separate them.

    Hello bro, I have a problem, I have a cbr 900rr model 1999, but The gasoline passes from the carburetor to the engine, and comes out through the crankcase, I already checked the needles, the buoys, and gasoline continues to flow, any idea what to do or check? Thank you. Greetings from Mexico.

    • @CrankAddict
      @CrankAddict  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love Mexico. Huatulco is my favorite, but lets keep it our secret. You definitely have a leaking needle assembly. You can pull the carbs off the motorcycle and put them on the bench and attach fuel line to them. Working on the carbs OFF the motorcycle may be easier. You will see one or more carbs leak. You need to check all float levels and replace the needle/seat assembly. The only other possibility is that you are using a high pressure fuel pump (I had a friend that put a fuel injected fuel pump on a carburetor engine....Not good.)

    How do you adjust the pilot screws and what do they do?

    • @CrankAddict
      @CrankAddict  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pilot screws control how much fuel the engine gets off idle. The main jets control how much fuel in delivered as rpm increases. Adjust the pilot screws to make this transition as seamless as possible.

    • @nicholasfilion1123
      @nicholasfilion1123 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      mcgyverdude I just got the bike running last night and it idles around 5,000 rpm. Do I need to adjust these idle screws? If so where are they and how do I adjust them? Is it the screws that require the D shaped tool?

    • @CrankAddict
      @CrankAddict  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your engine is getting too much air right now. Look down the barrel of each carb with the engine off and see if each throttle blade is barely cracked open. If the carbs were off, you should just barely be able to see light come through the crack-not possible with carbs on so just guess. If you think all carbs are OK then you have a vacuum leak somewhere and the engine is getting air that way. The pilot screw doesn't have anything to do with that.
      If a throttle blade is open too far, you may have a hung up linkage from when you reassembled the carbs. Double check all connections.

    • @nicholasfilion1123
      @nicholasfilion1123 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CrankAddict are you talking about the black pieces inside the carb with the needle? They are each open maybe a quarter inch or so. How would I adjust them so they close?

    • @CrankAddict
      @CrankAddict  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. that is the air valve. There is a butterfly assembly deeper inside. The airvalve moves in relation to the amount of air passing through the carburetor, which is controlled by the throttle (butterfly assembly). As the airvalve moves in relation to airflow, the needle is pulled out of the main jet, releasing more fuel. The air valve is supposed to have about a 1/4" gap. That gap is the amount of air that the pilot screw is responsible for fueling. The gap on the butterflies should be super small, maybe 1/64 inch.
