  • Giving it the TRIPPLE OPTION technique of primers and block sanding for a smooth "as glass like" substrate for the top coats.

Great video and explanation of what you are doing. How many times have you primed, guide coated, sanded and primed again? I ask because my old boss used to tell me that when it looks good Sand it Again! 😒

GM, thanks, well that's a great way your old boss puts it; 'sand it again when it looks good." I used my first stage of primer as my guide coat. As I am applying it, I can see what's going one on the panel and I will keep a log in my head of what I saw on each panel and after the primer dries, I will address them. What I will mostly encounter are scratch/scratches, a small hole, a chip, a small dent, a high spot, a low spot or a crack in the filler or existing paint if existing paint is on the panel. As the primer hits the panel and I follow it with my eyes, the wetness will "highlight" all the imperfections as I mentioned. The key is: not to prime just because it has to be prime. The first stage of priming should always be "priming with two purposes and not one. Most people only prime with one purpose; and that is to apply the paint after. Now with restoration it's a different animal than a modern car collision repairs. 95% of the time one application of 2 to 4 coats of 2k primer is all needed on a modern fender bender repair. But with a restoration or a build where the panels were down to bear metal from dipping, grinding, sanding, sand or media blasting; After all filler works "those panels has to be treated with what I call the "Tripple option" and not the triple option (college football). The first set of primer is my guide coats, the second set of primers is my "seal in" coats, and the last set is for the topcoats. The first two I will "dry block-sand" and the third I will "wet block-sand" to give it a very smooth substrate for the topcoats to be applied.

@geeanyautobodybuilds It takes a LOT of work before the paint goes on but people don't understand.

@@bigblockkings1031 GM, absolutely, and that is why a restoration and a custom job is a totally different job than a collision repair. Plus, the labor rate is 3 to 4 times what a collision repair labor rate is.
